# Oath of Annulment # "Templar"

\page ### Oath of Annulment The Oath of Annulment was created as an answer to mages gone wild, spellcasters who decided that they wanted more than what the world was willing to give to them, even if that meant taking it by force, as well as the magical creatures that populate the wilds of the world. The Annulment oath is a promise that such forces will not work unopposed, that magic (and its users) will be kept under control. Paladins who take this oath are typically known as templar. Paladins who swear this oath do so because they beleive in the defense of the weak against the strong, that the use of magic does not make one better than anyone else, but they also stand against the inherently magical creatures that plague the world. They beleive that magic is too dangerous for widespread use, and that those who are allowed to use it must be closely monitored. #### Tenets of Annulment While many paladins work *for* something, usually higher concepts like goodness, order, freedom, or even vengeance and retribution, Annulment paladins stand *against* something, specifically, magic and its users, and their driving principles reflect this. ***Equality.*** Those who use magic must be made to know that they are not better than anyone else simply because they have more power. ***Opposition.*** The spread of magic must be opposed. It is too dangerous to be relied upon, and must be carefully controlled. ***Protection.*** When a magic user does decide to harm others, it is your foremost duty to keep others safe from them, even at the cost of your life. ***Tolerance.*** Those mages who realize their power is dangerous and truly try to keep others from harm must be tolerated, as they set a critical example to those who do not. ***Self-Awareness.*** Even as you oppose the use of magic, you must use magic to do so. You must always watch yourself, to prevent becoming the very thing you seek to stop. #### Eldritch Antipathy Beginning when you take this oath at 3rd level, any time you use your Divine Sense, you can detect elementals, aberrations, otherworldly, and infused in addition to celestials, feinds, and undead. Your Divine Smite deals an extra 1d8 damage to these creatures, as well as any creature capable of casting at least one spell. (If a creature is both of a type listed here *and* capable of casting a spell, it still only takes one additional die of damage.) ___

##### Infused & Otherworldly Creatures Infused creatures are living things that have been altered by exposure to passive reserves of magic within the earth. Such a creature has its type "replaced" by *Infused*, and gains a number of different traits. Otherworldly creatures includes anything not native to the same plane of existence. For anyone not playing in one of my games, ignore this specification for your own games.

``` ``` > ##### Breaking Your Oath > Breaking your oath as an Annulment paladin doesn't work quite the same way as an ordinary paladin. The abilities of an Annulment paladin come from within, and while you may be expelled from your order, your Annulment abilities will still function normally. You can willingly surrender the oath in favor of another, but if you do so you typically can never swear it again. ___ #### Oath Spells You gain oath spells at the paladin levels listed. *Spells in **bold** are homebrew spells. The spells listed in parentheses are non-homebrew alternatives.* ##### Oath of Annulment Spells | Paladin Level | Spells | |:----:|:-------------| | 3rd | *detect magic, shield* | | 5th| *silence, nystul's magic aura* | | 9th | *counterspell, remove curse* | | 13th | *__backfire__ (elemental bane), banishment* | | 17th | *dispel evil and good, __mind fog__ (circle of power)* | #### Channel Divinity When you take this oath at 3rd level, you gain the following Channel Divinity options: ***Abjure Magic*** You can use your Channel Divinity to cleanse an area of hostile magic. As an action, you can dispel negative magical effects from allies, and positive effects from enemies. Make a Charisma ability check for each creature within 20 feet of you that is currently affected by a spell (the DC is 10 + the spell's level). On a success, that effect is ended. You can only dispel one effect on any given creature with a single use of this ability. If a creature in the area is concentrating on maintaing a spell, you can make a Charisma ability check opposed by the target's concentration check. If you succeed, their concentration is broken. ***Turn the Arcane*** As an action, you present your holy symbol, and each elemental, otherworldly, infused, or aberration within 30 feet of you that can hear you must make a Wisdom saving throw. If the creature fails its saving throw it is turned for 1 minute or until it takes damage. If the creature is native to a plane other than the one you are on and it fails its saving throw by 8 or more, it is instead banished for 1 minute. Infused creatures that fail the save also take 3d6 force damage. \page #### Aura of Warding Beginning at 7th level, you gain the ability tho mitigate the effects of hostile magaic used against you and your allies. You and friendly creatures within 10 feet gain resistance to damage from spells. At 18th level, the range of this aura increases to 30 feet. #### Spellbreaker Beginning at 15th level, when you make an ability check to dispel a magical effect with your Channel Divinity, or with the dispel magic or counterspell spells, you can add your proficiency bonus to the check. Also, when you use your Divine Smite on a creature that is concentrating on a spell, it has disadvantage on its saving throw to maintain its concentration. #### Antimagic Aura At 20th level, as an action, you can project an aura of antimagic energy that extends up to 30 feet away from yourself. (You can choose to make the aura smaller when you cast it, but once its area is decided you can't change it until you use this ability again. For 1 minute, the following effects apply: - If a spell is cast in the area, its effect is suppressed. A suppressed spell has its duration, healing, and/or damage halved (if applicable) , and any saving throws made against the spell have advantage. Attack rolls involved in the spell have disadvantage. - Elementals, aberrations, infused, undead, celestials, and fiends in the area have their speed reduced by half. An affected creature can make a Charisma saving throw at the start of each of its turns to resist the effect, and if it succeeds it can move normally for that round. - If a creature starts its turn in the area and it is concentrating on a spell, it must make a concentration saving throw against your spell save DC or lose its focus. ___ ### Spells ___ #### Backfire *4th-level abjuration* ___ - **Casting Time:** 1 action - **Range:** 30 feet - **Components:** V,S - **Duration:** Concentration, up to 1 minute Choose a creature you can see within range. The next time it casts a spell, it must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, it takes Necrotic damage equal to 1d10 times the spell's level, and the spell fails (the spell slot is still consumed), and the spell ends. On a success, it takes only half as much damage and the spell does not fail. A creature is unaware it has been affected by magic, both before and after attempting to cast a spell, unless it either succeeds on an Intelligence (Arcana) check vs your spell save DC, or has some way of sensing magic, such as the detect magic spell. ``` ``` ___ #### Mind Fog *5th-level enchantment* ___ - **Casting Time:** 1 action - **Range:** 60 feet - **Components:** V,S - **Duration:** Concentration, up to 1 minute You create a 20 foot radius sphere of thin blue vapors centered on a point you choose within range. The vapors spread around corners. The spell lasts for the duration or until a strong wind disperses the vapors, ending the spell. Its area is lightly obscured. Creatures in the fog's area have disadvantage on Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saves and checks. In addition, a creature attempting to cast a spell must make a Constitution saving throw, with the cast failing on a failure. A creature in the area that is concentrating on a spell must make a concentration save at the start of each of it's turns, losing it's focus on a failure.
