# Pirate

An elven female steps into view from the helm, calling to all nearby crew. They look up to hear an inspirational call: "Full speed ahead!", as they head directly towards another boat in the distance. A lithe human climbs a series of rope with ease to the crow's nest. Looking across the blue and white waves, a series or arrows cascades down on the deck below. Drawing his crossbow, he takes aim at whatever target he can find across the water. A masked half-orc draws a cutlass as he faces a single enemy. The docks beneath them shifting with every wave. Continuing to circle, they each look for an opportunity to exploit a weakness in each other's defense. Suddenly his opponent lunges at his side; with a swift flick of his blade the half-orc deflects the attack. Seeming to continue that single movement, his blade flies at his off balanced opponent as a string of curses fills the air around. It strikes him directly in the chest. Whether you choose to inspire your allies, duel a single opponent amidst a sea of enemies, or assist your crew, you will strike terror into the hearts of those who see you coming. ### Creating a Pirate As you create a pirate, think about how you were brought into this world of marauding. What drove you to join with others to plunder, pilage, and steal? How did you prove your skills to the crew? Did you have to fight your way on or were you born into a life of piracy already?

No matter how you managed to get there, due to the nature of a pirate's activities, you are most likely to be of a choatic nature and rarely ever good. However there have been known cases of "rogue pirates" who work for the people yet in a less civil manner. Vigilantes of sorts. In any case you are a blubbering babbling buccaneer prepared to face the dangers of your world. #### Quick Build You can make a pirate quickly by following these suggestions. First, Dexterity should be your highest ability score, followed by Charisma. Second, choose the sailor or variant pirate background. ## Class Features As a pirate , you gain the following class features. #### Hit Points ___ - **Hit Dice:** 1d8 per pirate level - **Hit Points at 1st Level:** 8 + your Constitution modifier - **Hit Points at Higher Levels:** 1d8 (or 5) + your Constitution modifier per pirate level after 1st #### Proficiencies ___ * **Armor:** Light armor, shields
* **Weapons:** Simple weapons, crossbows, scimitar, rapiers, shortswords
* **Tools:** Navigator's tools, one gaming set
* **Vehicles:** Water

* **Saving Throws:** Dexterity, Charisma
* **Skills:** Choose two from Acrobatics, Deception, Intimidation, Perception, Persuasion, Sleight of Hand and Stealth #### Equipment You start with the following equipment, in addition to the equipment granted by your background: - *(a)* two scimitars or *(b)* a scimitar and a shield - *(a)* a light crossbow and a case of twenty bolts or *(b)* two daggers - *(a)* a burglar's pack or *(b)* an explorer's pack - Leather armor and navigator's tools ### A Life at Sea Your experience scaling rigging and in around water has given you considerable expertise, considering both actions a natural movement for you. You gain a climb and swim speed equal to that of your normal speed. ### Black Spot As a bonus action you may choose a creature you can see within 60 feet of you. When you do so a black dot of roughly half an inch in diameter appears on the creature's body where you choose. Until the effect ends, you deal an additional 1d4 damage to the target whenever you hit it with a weapon attack. This effect ends automatically after 10 minutes or if you attack another creature. You can use this feature a number of times as shown on the Pirate table. You regain any expended uses when you finish a long rest. In addition if a target is killed by you or an ally while the spell is still active, you regain a use. Your Black Spot die changes when you reach certain levels in this class. The die becomes a d6 at 5th level, a d8 at 9th level, a d10 at 13th level and a d12 at 17th level. ### Fighting Style At 2nd level, you adopt a particular style of fighting as your specialty. Choose one of the following options. You can't take a Fighting Style more than once, even if you later get to choose again. #### Archery You gain a +2 bonus to attack rolls you make with ranged weapons. #### Defense While you are wearing armor, you gain a +1 bonus to AC. #### Dueling When you are wielding a melee weapon in one hand and no other weapons, you gain a +2 to damage rolls with that weapon. #### Two-Weapon Fighting When you engage in two-weapon fighting, you can add your ability modifier to the damage of the second attack. ### Toujours l'Audace At 2nd level, your unmistakable confidence propels you into battle. You add your Charisma modifier to your initiative rolls. ### Ship Duties Depending on your tasks as a crew member, you excel at different tasks. When you reach 3rd level, choose a set of duties: Captain, Skirmisher, or Swashbuckler, all detailed at the end of the class description. Your duties grants you features at 2nd level and again at 6th, 10th, 14th, and 18th level. ### Ability Score Improvement When you reach 4th level, and again at 8th, 12th, 16th, and 19th level, you can increase one ability score of your choice by 2, or you can increase two Ability Scores of your choice by 1. As normal, you can’t increase an ability score above 20 using this feature. ### Extra Attack Beginning at 5th level, you can attack twice, istead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn. The number of attacks increases to three when you reach 13th level in this class. ### Carouser The amount of time you've spent riotously drinking has left you hardy and resilient. At 7th level you gain resistance to poison damage and advantage on saving throws made against the effects of poison.

### Legendary Greed Starting at 11th level, finding treasure inspires your lust and paranoia towards it, leading you to search for hidden treasure troves. When you find an enclosed container with gold pieces in it, you may search it for hidden compartments. Roll 1d10. On a 1-4, the hidden compartment is empty. On rolling 5-10, you find that many stacks of your proficiency modifier X 5 in gold pieces. If your roll was 10, you also gain 1 of your choice: a potion of healing, a piece of jewelry worth 250 gold pieces, or ammunition +1. You may use this ability once between short rests. ### Salty Seadog At 20th level, when you role for initiative and have no uses of your Black Spot remaining, you regain 2 uses. ## Ship Duties Every member of a crew has to help out. Not only in a fight but also out. Your jobs will help to determine which combat style will work best for you and your crew. An approach to skills that best suits your personality should be considered when choosing your duties. ### Captain You are no inexperienced lad. You are the big boss, in charge of the entire ship. Your prowess in battle is rivaled only by your ability to lead others to battle. When you raise your flag and give the command, no one compares to the resolve of all who find themselves under you. #### Spellcasting When you reach 3rd level, you gain the ability to cast spells. See chapter 10 for the general rules of spellcasting and chapter 11 for the bard spell list. **_Cantrips._** You learn two cantrips of your choice from the bard spell list. You learn an additional bard cantrip of your choice at 10th level. **_Spell Slots._** The Captain Spellcasting table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your spells of 1st level and higher. to cast one of these spells, you must expend a slot of the spell's level or higher. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a long rest. For example if you know the 1st-level spell *disguise self* and have a 1st-level and 2nd-level spell slot available, you can cast *disguise self* using either slot. **_Spells Known of 1st Level and Higher._** You know three 1st-level bard spells of your choice. The Spells Known column of the Captain Spellcasting table shows when you learn more bard spells of 1st level or higher. Each of these spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots. For instance, when you reach 7th level in this class, you can learn one new spell of 1st or 2nd level. Whenever you gain a level in this class, you can replace one of the bard spells you know with another spell of your choice from the bard spell list. The new spell must be of a level for which you have spell slots. **_Spellcasting Ability._** Charisma is your spellcasting ability for your bard spells. Your magic comes from the braggadacio in your pirate chanteys, jigs, and profanities. You use Charisma whenever a spell refers to your spellcasting ability. ##### Captain Spellcasting

#### Bolster Resolve Beginning at 3rd level, as an action you can boost your ally's morale. Choose a number of allies that you can see, and can see or hear you, up to your Charisma modifier (with a minimum of 1). Those allies gain a +1 bonus to their attack rolls, damage rolls, and saving throws. This lasts for 1 minute or until you use this feature again. Your allies lose this bonus if you cannot see them, or they cannot see or hear you, or you become incapacitated. You can use this feature twice, regaining any expended uses when you finish a long rest. #### Crippling Taunt At 6th level, as an action, you can Demoralize the oppositions resolve. You choose a number of hostile creatures that you can see, and can see or hear you, up to your Charisma modifier (with a minimum of 1). Those creatures make a Charisma saving throw. On a failed save, the creatures have a -1 penalty to attack rolls, damage rolls, and saving throws. This lasts for 1 minute or until you use this feature again. \page

A creature automatically succeeds on the saving throw if it's immune to being frightened. On a successful save, a creature becomes immune to the effects of Demoralize. The hostile creatures lose this penalty if you cannot see them, or they cannot see or hear you, or you become Incapacitated. You can use this feature twice, regaining any expended uses when you finish a long rest. #### Enhanced Presence Once you reach 10th level in this class, the bonus from your Bolster Resolve becomes a +2. Additionally, the penalty from your Crippling Taunt becomes a -2. #### Parley At 14th level you may attempt to reason with your enemies. For your turn you may stop any fighting within 30 feet of you and try to come to an agreement. You have one minute to do so, if you cannot form a treaty then combat resumes from the end of your turn. This effect only works on creatures that understand a language that you speak and has an intelligence greater than 4. #### Superior Presence Once you reach 18th level in this class, the bonus from your Bolster Resolve becomes a +3. Additionally, the penalty from your Crippling Taunt becomes a -3. ### Skirmisher Whether you take up the vanguard, flank guard, or rearguard, you an agile fighter that dips in and out of battles. Popping up only when it is safe and then disengaging immediately afterwards. #### Nimble When you take this duty at 3rd level you become an expert and darting through fights. When you make a melee attack against a creature, you don't provoke opportunity attacks from that creature for the rest of the turn, whether you hit
or not. #### Evasion At 6th level, your instinctive agility lets you dodge out
of the way of certain area effects, such as a blue
dragon’s lightning breath or a fireball spell. When
you are subjected to an effect that allows you to
make a Dexterity saving throw to take only half
damage, you instead take no damage if you
succeed on the saving throw, and only half
damage if you fail. #### Hide in Plain Sight Starting at 10th level, you can spend 1
minute creating camouflage for yourself.
You must have access to fresh mud, dirt,
plants, soot, and other naturally
occurring materials with which to
create your camouflage. Once you are camouflaged in this way, you can try to hide by pressing yourself up against a solid surface, such as a tree or wall, that is at least as tall and wide as you are. You gain a +10 bonus to Dexterity (Stealth) checks as long as you remain there without moving or taking actions. Once you move or take an action or a reaction, you must camouflage yourself again to gain this benefit. #### Improved Critical Once you reach 14th level in this duty, your weapon attacks score a critical hit on a roll of 19 or 20. #### Belay That! At 18th level, when a creature within 30 feet of you that you have line of sight on takes an action, you may use your reaction to make a melee or ranged attack against that creature. On a hit, the creature takes no damage or status effects, but their action is spent without having taken effect. Once you use this feature, you must finish a short or long rest before you can use it again. ### Swashbuckler Swashbucklers are daring pirates who get into the fray with no fear. They combine courage, resourcefulness, and cunning; of which the combination matches only their own pride and ego. #### Artful Swordplay Sword fighting is as much a work of art as any painting to you. When you reach 3rd level, you learn two maneuvers that you can use by expending Swagger Points. You can only use one maneuver per attack. The number of Swagger Points you have is determined by your Pirate level, as shown in the Maneveurs and Swagger Points table. You regain any expended Swagger Points at the end of a long rest

You learn two additional maneuvers of your choice at 6th, 10th, 14th, and 18th level. Each time you learn
new maneuvers, you can also replace one
maneuver you know with a different one.

One-on-One

Mano-a-mano is the best way to fight.
Starting at 6th level, twice per day you may
cast *Compelled Dual*. The DC for this spell is equal
to 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier.
You regain any expended uses after a long rest.

Fencing Expert

Years of practicing with the sword has made it an
extension of your arm. Once you reach 10th level,
while you are a holding a weapon with which you are proficient you cannot be disarmed of that weapon
unless you are incapacitated.

Elegant

Starting at 14th level, you can use a bonus action to
gain advantage on the next Dexterity (Acrobatics)
or Strength (Athletics) check you make on your turn.

Unending Tenacity

At 18th level, when you roll for initiative and have no
Swagger Points remaining, you regain 4 Swagger Points.

#### Maneuvers The maneuvers are presented in alphabetical order. **_Cheap Shot._** Who said anything about fighting clean? When you make a weapon attack, you may spend 1 Swagger Point to attempt some dirty tactics. Roll a Sleight of Hand check against your opponent's Passive Perception. If your roll is equal-to or higher, you successfully perform any one of the following tricks: an “Ear Slap” (deafen), “Eye Poke” (blind), “Foot Stomp” (immobilize), or "Throat Punch" (mute). Status effects from Cheap Shot last a single round, and are only effective if the target has the necessary body parts. **_Disarming Attack._** Whenever you hit a creature with a weapon attack, you may spend 1 Swagger Point to attempt to disarm the target, forcing it to drop one item of your choice that it's holding. The target must make a Strength Saving Throw (DC equal to 8 + your Dexterity modifier + your Proficiency Modifier)--if successful, they keep hold of the item. On a failed save, they drop the object you choose. **_Distracting Strike._** When you successfully hit a target with a weapon attack you may spend 1 Swagger Point to distract that creature and give your allies an opening. The next attack roll against the target by an attacker other than you has advantage if the attack is made before the start of your next turn. **_En Garde._** As a bonus action you may spend 2 Swagger Point to go into a defensive stance and gain a +2 bonus to your AC until the beginning of your next turn. **_Flourish._** Rather than make an attack, you may choose to spend 1 Swagger Point making a brilliant flourish with your weapon in an attempt to dissuade your opponent from attacking. Your attacker or attackers must succeed at a Wisdom Saving Throw (DC equal to 8 + your Charisma modifier + your Proficiency modifier)—if they fail, they cannot make an Attack action against you on their following turn. **_Feint._** You may spend 1 Swagger Point to use a bonus action on your turn to feint. Choose one creature within five feet of you as your target. You have advantage on your next attack roll against that creature. **_Heartseeker._** When making an attack against your opponent, you may spend 2 Swagger Points to aim your blade for the target's most vital area, if it hits you treat this attack as a critical hit. **_Lunging Attack._** When you make a melee weapon attack on your turn, you can spend 1 Swagger Point to increase your reach for that attack by 5 feet. **_Parry._** When another creature damages you with a melee attack, you may use your Reaction to spend 1 Swagger Point and reduce the damage you receive by your Attack modifier. **_Play Dead._** After receiving a damaging hit, you may spend 1 Swagger Point to channel your inner Hamlet and pretend to die a vivid and melodramatic death. Falling to the ground and considered 'Prone'. Use your Reaction to make a Performance Check against your attackers—if successful, they assume you have been brutally slain, and must choose another target. **_Riposte._** When a creature misses you with a melee weapon attack, you may use your Reaction to spend 1 Swagger Point and make a melee weapon attack against that creature. **_Rush._** Preparing for your first strike of the round, you may choose to spend 2 Swagger Point to turn your elegant attacks into a flurry of blows. For that round, your total number of Attacks is doubled. **_Trip._** When you hit a creature with a weapon attack, you may spend 1 Swagger Point to attempt to knock the target down. If the target is large or smaller, it must succeed at a Strength Saving Throw (DC equal to 8 + your Dexterity modifier + your Proficiency modifier) or be knocked prone. Targets with a size above "Large" are unaffected.
