# The Rogue, Revised ___ A woman darts from shadow to shadow, stalking a prince through palace halls. With each pass through the open, the assassin silently slays a would-be witness, until at last the clueless prince walks alone and unguarded. A gentleman weaves through a barroom brawl, browsing, as if it were a market. With chaos as his camouflage and faster hands than any pugilist, the thief is free to pick pockets, clean coffers, and even pluck rings from clenched fists. A child watches from within a covered wagon as bandits trade missiles with its guards. With the faintest nudges—a marble cast beneath a horseshoe, or a mirror's glint in a bowman's eye—the boy mastermind sculpts the battle, until both sides thin to nothing, and he is left the spoils. All of these scoundrels are rogues: perhaps the least likely heroes in the worlds of Dungeons & Dragons. While others rely on monstrous strength, peerless fighting skill, or magic spells, rogues tilt the odds in their favour with nothing but the gall to cheat and the guile to succeed. Unassuming as they may be, rogues hide the extraordinary in plain sight. ### Turning the Tables Not every murderer, mugger, liar, or snoop is a rogue. Most scoundrels are desperadoes or casual opportunists, clumsily playing the hand they were dealt. Whether these amateurs succeed or fail is a matter of dumb luck. True rogues—hitmen, heisters, conmen, spies & saboteurs—have perfected their craft through ages of experience. With the quick thinking to see the briefest opportunity, and the fast hands to seize it, they make the most of the worst conditions, and work wonders with the best. The greatest rogues are the ultimate underdogs: mere men and women who slay giants, rob dragons, swindle devils and cheat death. ``` ``` ### Not Just Criminals Outlaws aren't the only ones who break rules and fight dirty. Vigilante heroes, intrepid sleuths, secret agents and shadowy leaders are all examples of lawful rogues who lie in the mirror image of the criminal underworld. What sets lawful rogues apart from their criminal counter-parts is their goals: not their methods. A hitman and a bounty hunter might wear the same cowl and stalk the same night, but never slay the same quarry. A crime family and a spy agency might prowl the same street and play the same games of intrigue, but on opposite sides. And so right under the noses of common folk and honest adventurers, lawful and lawless rogues fight secret duels and wage secret wars. ### Creating a Rogue As you create your rogue character, consider the character’s relationship to the law. Do you have a criminal past—or present? Are you on the run from the law or from an angry mob boss? Or did you leave your gang in search of bigger risks and bigger rewards? Is it greed that drives you in your adventures, or some other desire or ideal? What was the trigger that led you away from your previous life? Did a great con or heist gone terribly wrong cause you to reevaluate your career? Maybe a successful robbery gave you the coin you needed to escape the squalor of your life. Perhaps you suddenly found yourself cut off from your family or your mentor, and you had to find a new means of support. Likewise, you have advantage on attack rolls against any creature that you were hidden from earlier in the same turn. #### Take Hostage Starting at 3rd level, you can use your action to render a creature that you are grappling and that is under the effect of your Abduct feature blinded, deafened, restrained, or unable to speak until the start of your next turn. #### Take Reins Starting at 3rd level, you can use your action to exert limited control over a creature you are climbing and that is under the effect of your Abduct feature. When you do so, choose one of the following effects. * **Forced Attack.** You force the creature to make one melee weapon attack or shove attempt against a target of your choice, which may even be itself. You can score a Sneak Attack using this attack, as if you had made it yourself. * **Forced Movement.** You force the creature to move up to its speed as you direct it, without provoking opportunity attacks. The creature then cannot move until the end of its next turn, unless an effect (such as the Dash action) grants it extra movement on top of its speed. #### Phantom Captor Starting at 7th level, when you are hidden and reveal yourself by making a melee attack, climbing a creature or leaving your hiding place, you remain hidden until the end of the turn. If you end the turn in a new hiding place, you remain hidden until discovered. #### Takedown Starting at 11th level, you can use Take Hostage & Take Reins on creatures not under the effect of your Abduct feature. If your target is under the effect of Abduct, you can use either feature as a bonus action rather than an action. #### Hogtie Starting at 15th level, you can use rope or chains to bind a creature that you are climbing, just as you would bind a creature that you are grappling. With cruel genius & a subtle touch, you cast friends and foes alike as accomplices, decoys and scapegoats on a stage of your making. #### Aiding & Abetting Starting at 1st level, when you use the Help action to aid your allies in attacking a target, you gain the following benefits: + Your target can be within 60 feet of you, rather than 5 feet. + If your target is within 5 feet of you, you can attempt to grapple or shove it as part of the Help action. + If the attack that you aided hits, the target takes extra damage equal to your Sneak Attack damage. #### Hinder Starting at 1st level, you can use your action to hinder the attacks of a creature you can see within 60 feet of yourself. By captivating and misdirecting your victims' attention, you steal their treasures, secrets and lives before their very eyes. #### Talk Your Way In Starting at 2nd level, you can use your action to inspire naive curiosity in a friendly creature who can see or hear you and who regards you as a stranger. Armed with this knowledge, you can blindside, blackmail, and shepherd them into unwitting demise. #### Leer Starting at 2nd level, you can Search as a bonus action. #### Listen In Starting at 2nd level, you can read lips. In addition, when you detect traces of a creature's presence (such as the sight of its shadow or the sound of its footsteps), you can pinpoint that creature's location, recognize its identity, and determine what activity it is engaged in. #### Sixth Sense Starting at 10th level, you can spend 1 minute focusing your powers of perception. When you do so you gain one of the following benefits, which lasts until you use this feature to gain a different benefit: + **Blindsight.** You gain blindsight to a range of 10 feet. + **Darkvision.** You gain darkvision to a range of 60 feet. + **Eagleeye.** You can see up to 1 mile away with no difficulty.
