### Klabautermann A klabautermann (plural: klabautermänner or klabautermenn), alternatively known as a ship sprite, caulk-knocker, galleywag, skibsnisse, or shiphusband, is a gruff and surly spirit that takes residence aboard seagoing or spelljamming ships, where he busies himself with whatever needs doing. The exact details of a klabautermann's appearance can vary wildly between individuals, but they always resemble a caricature of a stereotypical sailor. ___ ***Born to Sail.*** Like so many other fey creatures, klabautermenn arise from certain emotions under certain conditions. Specifically, klabautermenn arise from a crew's love of sailing. Owing to diversity among sailors, klabautermenn can resemble virtually any humanoid species, albeit often in deformed miniature, standing no taller than 3 feet in height. They are always dressed for ship work, usually in oilskins or wool. Many are bearded, and they typically appear to be of late middle- to early old-age, regardless of how old (or young) they actually are. Most smoke a pipe, and all of them carry caulking hammers — special mallets used by shipwrights and bosuns to pound water-proofing material into cracks in or between a ship's planks. ___ ***Dilligent Deckhand.*** A klabautermann lives to sail. He spends his time aboard plying his uncanny skill and deceptive strength to shipboard tasks. He will often repair damage the crew has missed, mend frayed lines or torn sails, or otherwise make himself as useful as possible. Despite a klabautermann's direct involvement in running a ship, crews are often unaware of the helpful sprite's existence owing to his secretive nature and unique shipboard abilities that allow him to avoid being seen. Sailors who discover that their tasks have already been completed by a klabautermann chalk them up to some other member of the crew having done them. ___ ***Forecastle Foreman.*** A klabautermann will redo any improperly done tasks he comes across. If the job was done poorly due to a crewman's inexperience, the klabautermann will shadow them, whispering instructions on how to do the job right. If the poor performance is an issue of laziness, the klabautermann punishes the offender by making mischief for them. While some of the tricks a klabautermann will pull on a sailor that incurs his displeasure can be quite severe, he will never allow their life to be endangered. An angry klabautermann may throw a sailor overboard, but is also quick to throw them a lifeline or dive in after them should they need direct rescue. ___ ***Mistaken Harbinger.*** The only time a klabautermann willingly shows himself to a crew is when the ship is in danger that he can't manage alone, to warn the crew or ask their assistance. Unfortunately, such dangers are often too much for even the best of crews to handle, and the ship is stricken or lost. For this reason, many have come to the mistaken belief that the presence of a klabautermann is an omen of impending doom, or that the klabautermann is somehow responsible for the misfortune that befalls. ___ ***Shantyman.*** On those rare occasions when a klabautermann makes himself known to the crew outside of an emergency, it is to celebrate. During a shipboard celebration, a klabautermann will inevitably produce or procure an accordion or concertina to play a fine shanty to which the crew can't help but dance a merry jig. ___ ***Don't Give Up the Ship!*** A klabautermann's loyalty lies first with the ship, then with its crew, and finally himself. When all hope is lost, the klabautermann has one final trick up his sleeve to save the ship — literally giving his life for the vessel. He can sacrifice himself, offering up his lifeforce to the ship to magically restore it back to shipshape.

For example, the klabautermann could use this action to run or secure rigging, drop or weigh anchor, batten down or trice up hatches, load or unload cargo, tie on or cast off mooring lines, mend torn sails, or swab decks. > ### Bonus Actions > ***Reel In.*** The klabautermann pulls a creature grappled by his Harpoon or clinging to a lifeline he is holding up to 10 feet towards himself. > ### Reactions > ***Set Harpoon.*** After hitting a creature with his harpoon, the klabautermann anchors the harpoon instead of retuning it to his hand. The target is grappled (escape DC 17), and can only succeed in escaping with successful Dexterity (Acrobatics) check. While grappled in this way, a creature's speed isn't reduced, but it can move only in directions that bring it closer to the klabautermann. A creature takes 5 (1d10) slashing damage if it escapes from the grapple or if it tries and fails. While grappling a creature in this way, the klabautermann can't make other attacks against other creatures. > > ***Save the Ship!*** When a ship the klabautermann is aboard is reduced to 0 hit points, he sacrifices himself to save the ship. The klabautermann dies and his body disintegrates into a burst of water and foam, leaving behind only the equipment he was wearing or carrying. The ship's hull then regains half its hit points.
