### Navigation

When the party begin travel, they state their *Intended Direction of Travel* and *Travel Pace*. If they are not following a road, river or obvious landmark and they have not previously visited the area with *Wanderer*, the party make a Survival ability check. ### Finding a Hidden Location For each watch that the party spend searching the current hex, they can make an Investigation check to try and find a hidden location.

## Converting Older Content ### Encounter Difficulty #### First and Second Editions Encounters were often designed to be on the easy side, allowing players to do more exploring and have numerous encounters before resting. Replicate similar pacing without reducing the number of encounters, by keeping encounters to easy or medium difficulty. #### Third Edition Use the encounter level and suggested level range of the adventure to try and figure out the intended difficulty. #### Fourth Edition Difficulty level is two-thirds of the encounter level. (For example, if the encounter level is 9, in an adventure designated for 7th-level characters, then the encounter is intended to be hard or deadly.) ### Group Size If a group of monsters has 7 or more members, the numbers might need to be reduced, especially for characters lower than 5th level. ### Monsters In fifth edition, ability scores should be in the 3 to 30 range; third and fourth edition ability scores will often need to be reduced. #### First and Second Editions Monsters are more numerous, but typically deal lower damage and have fewer hit points than their fifth edition counterparts. Movement above 12: Multiply by 2, round to nearest 10. #### Third Edition Monster distribution is fairly close to fifth edition. - Armor Class = Average of touch AC and actual AC, or 20 percent lower (max 22) - Attack modifier = Ability modifier + 3 - Save DC = 10 + Ability modifier - If a creature has to make a check or save, use its ability score modifiers. Grant it a +3 bonus if it should be good at that thing. #### Fourth Edition - HD = CR? - Wing it... ### Spells Use the most closely matching spells from 5e. Maybe assign some cantrips. This is followed by a *dream stage*, in which the adventure begins, the hero has some success, and has an illusion of invincibility. However, this is then followed by a *frustration stage*, in which the hero has their first confrontation with the enemy, and the illusion of invincibility is lost. This worsens in the *nightmare stage*, which is the climax of the plot, where hope is apparently lost. Finally, in *the resolution*, the hero overcomes their burden against the odds. ### The Seven Basic Plots #### 1. Overcoming the Monster The protagonist sets out to defeat an antagonistic force (often evil) which threatens the protagonist and/or protagonist's homeland. ___ **Examples:** Perseus, Theseus, Beowulf, Dracula, The War of the Worlds, Nicholas Nickleby, The Guns of Navarone, Seven Samurai, James Bond, Jaws, Star Wars, Attack on Titan. #### 2. The Quest The protagonist and companions set out to acquire an important object or to get to a location. #### 7. Rebirth An event forces the main character to change their ways and often become a better individual. ___ **Examples:** Pride and Prejudice, The Frog Prince, Beauty and the Beast, The Snow Queen, A Christmas Carol, The Secret Garden, Peer Gynt, Groundhog Day. ### The Rule of Three "Again and again, things appear in threes..." There is rising tension and the third event becomes "the trigger for something important to happen". We are accustomed to this pattern from childhood stories. Ironically, the Rule of Three can be expressed in four ways: - **The cumulative three.** Cinderella's three visits to the ball. - **The ascending three.** Each event is of more significance than the preceding; the hero must win first bronze, then silver, then gold. - **The contrasting three.** Only the third has positive value; The Three Little Pigs, two have houses blown down by the Big Bad Wolf. - **The dialectical three.** As with Goldilocks' bowls of porridge, the first is wrong in one way, the second in an opposite way, and the third is "just right". ### Adventure Concept #### Where does the adventure begin? The one part of the game you can’t improvise. You need to know where things start. #### Where might the adventure lead? Instead of building out an entire campaign, world, or multi-threaded adventure, narrow the story down to just a few potential options. Choose enough to give the players some real choices, but not so many they become paralyzed. Three is a good number, and most important, writing down three options helps you feel prepared. #### What are the notable NPCs up to? Where have the NPCs been? What have they been doing while the party have been going about their business? Have they collided? - Good villains have a reason for being the way they are. - Good villains aren’t static, they have plots and plans. - Good villains are smart. - Good villains think what they are doing is right. Great villains actually are right. Focus on the ideal number of villains: one to three. One is the perfect number for a story with one focus. Three villains are enough to have a lot of interesting twists and turns in a longer story. More than three and the story won’t feel focused, the players won’t care about any particular one because their focus will be diluted. ### Tying PCs to the story Keep notes for each of the PCs, with a few key words on their backgrounds, motivations, and potential ties to the ongoing story. Reference these notes as you consider each week’s adventure. ### Keep the end in sight When a story grows organically from the actions of rich characters, there is no clear ending. These characters drive things forward, building up momentum in directions you never thought about when you started. Then, suddenly, you need to end it, however you can. \page
