\page # Introduction The Spiral is a sci-fi reskin/reinvention of DnD 5e. The objective of this handbook is to introduce the framework for exploring the countless unique adventures that are possible in this setting. The sci-fi elements of this universe were inspired by Iain M. Banks' novels and the Fallout series in particular with some homages given to several other sci-fi franchises along the way. The target audience for this handbook are players who are already somewhat experienced with Dungeons and Dragons, but I will do my best to familiarize you with the basics of DnD 5e here. DnD is a framework for crafting unique narratives with each player serving as a protagonist with the power to effect real change on the world around them. The players describe what they want their avatar to do and the dungeon master (DM) describes the effects of those choices. The players success in executing their desired action is determined by the d20. The d20 roll, with additional modifiers where necessary, is compared against the challenge rating of the attempted action (established by the DM before rolling) to determine whether the player succeeds or fails. Unless otherwise stated, if a check involves division, anything after the decimal point should be rounded down. The relevant scenario is then described by the DM. These attempts are usually a binary (e.g. he successfully scaled the cliff, or he fell down halfway up), but there also exists the possibility of critcally succeeding (20/20)/failing(1/20) which often offers another two potential outcomes. E.g. he scaled the wall so quickly and silently that he caught the two assassins waiting to ambush him by surprise. Or he climbed all 20 ft before losing his grip and noisily slamming face first into the ground taking 2d6 bludgeoning damage upon impact. These critical effects are usually optionally enforced by the DM or according to house rules unless otherwise stated for a particular action. Both successes and failures can be interesting in game, so feel empowered to take full advantage of crits when they happen. When checks are performed they are done against the six ability scores: Strength (Str), Dexterity (Dex), Constitution (Con), Intelligence (Int), Wisdom (Wis), Charisma (Cha). These determine which modifiers should be added to a given check. Skills and proficiency allow players to add their proficiency bonus on top of this check where relevent. In combat, an attack roll is made and upon success is followed by damage dice which determine the amount of damage wrought by the attack. The rule when determining if an attack hits or misses is meet or beat so if an attack is equal to the defendants armor class, then they successfully hit their target. This is also true of your average challenge rating, if the CR is 15 then rolls with modifier of 15+ all make the check. Similarly, when a player/creature is making a saving throw against a save difficulty class (DC) then they have to meet or beat the number to escape it. So if an attacker lobs a grenade at a player with a DC of 12, then only modified rolls of 12+ make the check. ``` ``` Another major aspect of skill checks is advantage and disadvantage. The specific rules will be described based on the specific circumstances to inform the DM of when to apply either. When advantage is applied to a skill check, the player may role twice and take the higher of the two numbers. Conversely, if a skill check has disadvantage, then the player must roll twice and take the lower. For example, if a player tries to scale a rock wall in power armor, then they will have disadvantage. So, if the player rolls a 17 and a 12 with modifiers against the 15 DC, then she will fail because the lower of the two rolls does not meet or beat the DC. Another example, if a Vhun Covert Operative with their skin colored to varnished steel to match the interior of the superluminal he's crouching in is silently aiming their weapon down a hallway and opens fire as soon as he has the shot, then he can take advantage on the shot (as well as sneak attack damage, see Vhun Covert Ops). So, if he rolls a 12 and a 19 with modifiers against an opponent with a 17 armor class (AC), then he will succeed in making the shot since being hidden have him advantage on the roll. When applying the rules in this Playbook to your own adventure in The Spiral it may be possible for contradictions in rules to arise during play. If this happens, the general rule is that specific beats general, but it is ultimately the DM's call to determine how the rules should work in their adventure. Unlike standard DnD, classes are inextricably linked to species, due to the extremely unique physiology of the creatures found across The Spiral so a good party should include a mix from across the intelligent species to establish a balanced adventuring party. For example, Vhun's tend to be tanky and able to absorb or deal a great deal of damage so they are a highly effective combatants. Dwellers and Androids tend to be support types capable of reinforcing the party in a variety of different ways by virtue of the unique technologies they have at their disposal. These two species are also often integral to unwinding the secrets of the Spiral by virtue of their intelligence and wisdom respectively. Humans, as Nen User or cyborgs, can be anything from tanks to support specialists so depending on your mix, a human can help balance any team. The Spiral does not include any explicit magic unlike vanilla DnD. Instead, a variety of technological wonders can be relied upon to fill the niche that the magic once occupied. Androids (artificers) as the most brilliant individual creatures in The Spiral can analyze and reverse engineer nearly any technology into unique gadgets of their own design to gain powers akin to wizards or clerics or warlocks or even hunters depending on where their focus lies. Vhun stand among the physically strongest and most organic of all the organisms native to The Spiral and can fill the niche barbarians, fighters, or rogues depending on the path they choose. Dwellers are bards using ancient Dweller technology in lieu of magic. Nen Users are akin to ultra monks who can use a system similar to Ki to develop powers in any of the magical schools or even beyond them.

\page # Spiral Healing & Vorpal Dice Natives to The Spiral can be a brutal and unforgiving to the uninitiated. Fortunately, with sufficient preparation, technology and training can be used to fill the gap in strength between an adventurer and the monsterous denizens they will encounter. The unique nature of this environment is reflected through a few changes to core mechanics in the vanilla DnD 5e experience. ### Long Rest In The Spiral, a long rest will not heal characters or replenish hit dice unless it is coupled with access to a medbay i.e. on your ship, in a hotel, or in a hospital. However, the species-specific features related to long rests can still be activated away from a medbay. Dwellers can regenerate limbs during a short rest thanks to their inscrutable, nanobot enhanced anatomy. Vhun can regenerate limbs during a long rest thanks to their lizard-like quick regeneration. ### Short Rest A short rest can be used to heal by expending hit dice as in vanilla DnD. ## Vorpal Dice Modern science is a wonder and nearly any severed limb can be reattached by even the most rudimentary ship medbay. As a result, neither you nor your opponents need pull your punches in combat. In The Spiral, you deal an additional damage die when you crit against your foe with a slashing weapon. To deal vorpal damage, in addition to doubling your normal damage dice, role one unmodified d6:

However, if you roll a 6: first deal 6 damage to your opponent, then pick one of your opponents limbs and **HACK IT OFF**. Similarly, if your opponent rolls a 20 and a 6 consecutively then you will lose a limb. Depending on your species you will have a species-specific response to losing a limb. As an android or cyborg, the loss of synthetic flesh will not affect you except that you will not be able to use that limb until it's repaired/replaced. However, a Dweller who loses a limb must make a DC 10 constitution saving throw or be paralyzed for one turn due to nervous recoil. A Vhun who loses a limb must succeed in making a DC 10 wisdom saving throw or become frenzied and blindly attack the nearest target (friend or foe) for 1d4 turns. A human losing an organic limb is in even more trouble. Upon losing a limb, the average human will immediately collapse and bleed out losing 1d6 health to blood loss each turn until they are saved or expire. However, if that human is a Nen User, then they can expend a reaction to seal the wound with Nen and continue fighting. But if they fail their Nen Focus check, then all of their stacked Nen will dissipate and they will fall prone and begin to bleed out. They can attempt the Nen Focus check again by expending their reaction each turn until they succeed or are saved, but lost Nen will not return unless resummoned by expending Nen Points and the relevant actions.

>##### Some Notes > These vorpal die rules are designed assuming normal combat conditions and may change based on the specifics of a given combat scenario. For example, an opponent in power armor will generally be immune to limb severance by any traditional blade. Similarly, a plasma sword may be more likely to sever limbs than a traditional blade which could be reflected as severing limbs on either a 5 or 6. Additionally, a plasma sword may be able to supercede power armor's normal immunity to limb severance.

\page # History Humanity began in the Terra system some 200,000 years ago by most estimates, but only began writing about their experiences about 5,000 years ago and given the <100 year lifespan of a human, most of the first 195,000 years are a haze. A year is the measurement of time it takes for Terra, the human homeworld to orbit Sol once. A reflection of their depthless humility, humans have declared this period of time the bases for Galactic Standard Time (GST) and this is currently the only known attempt at universalizing time by any species in The Spiral, except for the Dwellers who assure me that the real year is 56 according to the rotation of the Spiral, but they also inform me that the year will continue to be 56 for the next 200 million terrestrial years so that is not a terribly useful metric. Therefore, I will go ahead and use GST to refer to any specific time interval or point in time. Anyway, back to the origin of these hairless apes called humans. The Terra System where their homeworld is located in unique in that it has 2 planets in its habitable zone: Terra and Sina. Soon after landing on Luna, man set foot on the jungle planet, Sina which is on the warm side compared to Terra but still very much habitable for terrestrial, oxygen breathing organisms. So, the first colony was established on Sina and soon thereafter they began claiming independence from the various Terran nations that laid claims to parts of Sina. As a result, in a tragic repetition of history, the nuclear armed Terrans annihilated the defenseless Sinese. However, ironically, the Terran leaders' victory came with enough public backlash that Sina's independance was assured and the first universally accepted laws for interstellar conflict were established:
(1) No planetary governing body, founding or otherwise, can claim jurisdiction on another human inhabited planet.
(2) Attacks may never again be perpetrated from a space-based weapon against a planetary target.
The first interstellar accords concluded the 1st Sinese-Terran Conflict in 356 GST. However, peace did not last for long. The advancement of technology provided new fuel for the old conflict between Terra and Sina. The first expansion began with the development of the NES drive which allows starships to travel through non-Euclidean space (NES) which circumvents the speed of light allowing starships to travel as qickly as one lightyear per hour. However, the dawning of this technology came with a high assumption of risk. Approximately 1/1000 jumps resulted in an irrevocably lost superluminal which initially put the brakes on humanity's rate of expansion. However, this problem was resolved when the SWC developed the first full A.I. and paired it with stolen UFP schematics for an NES drive establishing a 100% accurate FTL jump rate. The UFP claimed jurisdiction over the new A.I. equipped SWC ships by virtue of owning the NES drive, but the SWC refused to acknowledge their claim thus initiating the 2nd Sinese-Terran conflict. This conflict raged across both interstellar organizations for years to no real end until it finally expanded into the Terra System. Here, the SWC took advantage of the unwritten rule that conflicts not expand to the Terran System by annihilating the stationed UFP fleet with overwhelming force. Then, technically respecting the Interstellar Accords, the SWC proceeded to destroy every artificial satellite in low-Terran orbit (LTO). The SWC was soon repelled with the arrival of the rest of the UFP's forces, but the damage was done. Terra's LTO was transformed into a debris field in which no satellite will be able to be launched for hundreds of years. Another year of war led to the formation of the 2nd Interstellar Summit to amend the laws for interstellar conflict:
(3) Low Terran Orbit is hereby considered part of an inhabited planet when designating targets and is still considered space-based when taking offensive action.
(4) The Terra System must be recognized as a neutral zone by both the SWC and UFP in perpetuity.
These accords concluded the Second Sinese-Terran conflict in 577 GST with the UFP still lacking the Sinese schematics for developing true A.I.

Some years later, humanity discovered they were not alone in The Spiral. Just outside of humanity's galactic goldilocks zone (GZZ), the cross section of The Spiral in which solar systems tend to be of the appropriate age to foster the conditions necessary for human habitation, the Vhun had been developing their own loose civilization for around 100,000 years. The Vhun dreadnoughts that first encountered human civilizations on the border worlds saw the humans simply as prey. Following and extremely one-sided conflict with these border colonies, the Vhun enslaved or ate their pick from the three colonies: Satellite, Red Nost, and Sprite before deciding that they had no use for the oxygen-rich worlds and simply glassed the 3 worlds they'd encountered with plasma weapons. Fortunately, rather than facing and falling at the hands of the superior Vhun Dreadnought, a UFP enforcer named Tanya Bellrod made an FTL jump from Satellite straight to Damocles to report the Vuhn invasion initiating the UFP counterattack. The first UFP fleet to challenge the Vuhn setup a barricade to attempt to overwhelm the large but outnumbered Vuhn dreadnoughts. However, the barricade simply melted before the heavily armored, plasma weapon wielding, and unbelievably fast Vuhn dreadnoughts. The UFP clocked these ships at 0.8c, leagues beyond the speed of human ion thrusters. However, despite their speed or perhaps because of it, the Vhun had not achieved faster than light travel (FTL) which UFP Fleet V commanded by Victor Vivante took advantage of by launching volleys of nuclear warheads to incept the dreadnought's vector of travel then jumping into NES before the dreadnoughts came into range. He rinsed and repeated until each of the 3 dreadnoughts were destroyed or crippled. The last of the 3, commanded by Vulgis K'han acceded surrender to Vivante in exchange for safe passage to his homeworld. This surrender ended in the establishment of the 45th parallel, the line that separates Vhun from Human Space and which representatives of both species came to agree to as the definitive legal separation between the two species' GGZs in 600 GST. However, news of the extermination of 3 UFP colonies spread fear like wildfire and led to the mass exodus of systems along the 45th parallel by both the SWC and the UFP citizenry.

PART 2 | HISTORY

\page In 626 GST a new, peaceful alien species called Dwellers were discovered in gas giants across The Spiral. A cutting edge manufacturor in the UFC called the Vera Corporation established the first branch of Dweller Studies focusing first on the initially contacted Dwellers in Hecate of the Terranov System to the largest known Dweller population on Nasqueron. The new technologies developed out of these studies funded the establishment of Vera's Belt which currently serves as the primary trading post for exchanging knowledge and goods with the CAP.

In 700 GST, the first A.I. Mind was formed and the Collective for Artificial Persons (CAP) was founded in the abandoned territories near Vhun Space by A.I. who escaped from the SWC. The SWC refused to recognize the CAP or even A.I. as sapient or deserving of any rights beyond being human property and went to war with the CAP to reclaim their stolen territory, meaning both the systems the CAP inhabited and the A.I. who composed the CAP themselves. The SWC was initially successful in overwhelming the CAP with sheer numbers, but were eventually repelled when the CAP unveiled their newly minted Star Cluster Spanning Laser Defense Grid which melted the offensive SWC fleet when it came to close to the CAP's central cluster with the fully harnessed power of 5 suns. The Minds had invented the Spiral's first dyson spheres and found a way to track ships travelling through NES at will. Now wielding unfathomable power, the Minds sent drones armed with focusing lenses ahead of incoming hostile ships to lineup their new laser equipped with the power of a small gamma ray burst to wipe their foes out the moment they returned to normal space. Undeterred the SWC instead proceeded to target Calypso, the major system along the CAP's trade lines with the UFP that was, therefore, outside the Grid. The SWC was easily able to wreak havic on the demilitarized superluminals across the system. Unfortunately for them however, among the casualties were thousands of non-combatant UFC citizens associated with the Vera Corporation which enraged the UFP and instigated the 3rd and bloodiest Sinese-Terran Conflict. When the SWC's 11th fleet stopped in Nanjing to refuel after attacking Calypso they were set upon in a coordinated assault by three UFP fleets simultaneously. The Sinese fleet wasn't just destroyed, it was bombarded so intensely that its starships were knocked out of orbit and into Nanjing, annihilating the colony. The SWC's response was equally ferocious and after five years of fighting, both interstellar powers had expended over fifty percent of their military might. Nanjing's name was forgotten and the area became known as the Ship Graveyard built by hundreds of superluminals and serving as the final resting place for more than 900 million humans. Swayed by the immense loss of life, both sides agreed to sign a peach treaty ending the conflict in 732 GST. However, the two sides were unable to come to any agreement updating the Interstellar Accords nor were they even able to address the CAP in the treaty. As a result, today the UFP and SWC are no longer at war, but tensions persist. The CAP and SWC continue to be at war, but have reached an unspoken armistice in which neither side is willing to reignite the conflict. Since the formation of the CAP, the UFP have been able to employ A.I. on their NES-equipped starships by creating agreements with the CAP that respect the independence of the A.I.s being employed. The current year is 772 GST and, until now, all NES drives were confined to superluminals which were the only ships that generated enough power to jump into NES; however, 5 years ago the first prototype compact NES drive was installed in a frigate-class starship and in the year 772 they are being mass-produced and becoming available on the open market. To influence some controls over the coming expansion, the UFP is making the first civilion NES pilot's licenses available to specific members of the general public known as Hunters.

\page # Technology Spiral technology is produced by any one of the four known intelligent species: Humans, A.I., Vhun, and Dwellers. Human technology tends to focus on facilitating their rapid expansion across The Spiral. A.I. tend to think along similar lines to humans as products of their creation originally and often collaborate with humans to develop new technology. The Vhun have a distinct technolological evolution from humans that tends to focus on either replicating or penetrating their own incredibly durable keratinous shells or otherwise to support their battle centric culture. Dwellers have developed and forgotten more technology than the entirety of the other three intelligent civilizations are likely to ever even conceptualize. As a result, their technology is more like magic, even the Dwellers don't remember how it all works. ## Human Technology - **Programmable Matter:** Programmable matter is at the core of the Internet of Things: matter that can be manipulated to take on any shape and switch easily between shapes akin to the pixels on a computer screen. Such matter is still very expensive so it's only used for highly specialized devices. - **The Spike:** The spike is an invention that has been key to humanity's rapid expansion across The Spiral. In it's exact center, the spike contains millions of anti-gravitons. This device directs the vector of anti-gravity exerting a maximum force of around 100,000N so it can only lift small craft away from a planet at a time, but because it generates anti-gravity it can lift anything within it's weight range, ~25,000 lbs, out of a planet's gravity well with ease. The only issue with using this device is that the anti-gravitons will always tend to escape from any nearby mass until it reaches an equilibrium with the local matter at some point in space. Understanding this, the spike contains the anti-gravitons in a perfect sphere of programmable matter. Since the sphere is able to provide mass in 360 degrees across all 3 spatial axes wouldn't it just zero out and allow the anti-gravitons to behave like they normally would? Exactly! which is why it's programmable matter not a metal sphere, depending on where the nearest mass is, the built in mass detector will pass information to the spike which will then thin the sphere on the sides that are closer to the outside mass and thicken on the far side to keep the anti-gravitons immobile. During preliminary trials on Terra's surface, the spike froze in space and proceeded to be launched to the west, breaking the shell on a nearby mountain and losing the valuable anti-gravitons demonstrating the need to consider all factors including the local planet's spin. - **Ion Thrusters:** Ion thrusters are the most efficient engines known to humans. By vaporizing the fuel and separating it into positive and negative ions then blasting half into space, the thruster uses magnetism to maximize the amount of thrust generated for the fuel expended. - **Solar Sails:** Even ion thrusters are limited by their primitive need to launch things out of the back of a starship to get it to move forward. By contrast, solar sails allow space craft to travel through a given star system by coasting along the solar wind of the local star. This becomes less effective as the ship gets farther away from the star, but it offers a fuel saving alternative to travelling through space when the conditions are right. - **NES Drive:** The NES or Non-Euclidean Space Drive is the device behind FTL travel. Originally only able to be affixed to a superluminal, this device warps local spacetime transporting the target ship into NES where the speed of light limit does not exist. Regardless of their speed, as long as they are moving, ships move at approximately one lightyear per hour in NES. This functionally opens the entire Spiral to travel, end-to-end travellable in ~8 years, but still precludes exploration of nearby galaxies. Even using an NES Drive, it would take ~2,000 years to reach the next closest galaxy. - **Compact NES Drive:** A highly disruptive creation, the compact NES Drive can be affixed to a medium class frigate allowing small ships to travel through NES just like the superluminals. - **Superluminals:** A superluminal is a leviathon class starship ranging from 6,000 to 10,000 feet in length, these ships are the lifeblood of human civilization transporting supplies and people between the colonies. - **Frigates:** A frigate is a medium class starship between 300 and 500 ft in length and equipped with a Compact NES Drive. ## A.I. Technology - **Minds:** A mind is an A.I. collective with at least the complete resources of a planet committed to processing power and data storage. - **Dyson Sphere:** A dyson sphere is a metal sphere built around a sun capable of consuming power directly as it's released by that sun. - **The Grid:** The Star Cluster Spanning Laser Defense Grid, or the Grid for short, is the defensive grid around the CAP Cluster. It includes 5 Dyson Spheres surrounding the suns of each of the primary CAP inhabited systems: Artemis, Apollo, Hyades, Hesperides, and Hyas. This Grid focuses the power of these suns into a laser capable of vaporizing entire fleets of superluminals. The Grid takes a good deal of preparation to aim, but given the Minds' ability to calculate arrivals in NES, they are always able to determine an assailants approach vector in time to aim the Grid making the CAP Cluster a virtually impenetrable fortress to anyone without an invitation.

PART 3 | TECHNOLOGY

\page ## Vhun Technology - **Plasma Weapons:** Most plasma requires an incredible amount of machinery to maintain the necessary temperatures required to maintain plasma without it changing shape. Humans have only managed to develop plasma cutters which still require a backpack sized amount of machinary to maintain the plasma so they cannot be effectively used as a weapon. By contrast, the Vhun have dozens of variations of compact plasma-based weapons. Experts have hypothesized that the Vhun developed these weapons specifically as a reliable means of penetrating their own incredibly tough exoskeletons. - **The Gravity Propeller:** The gravity propeller is an advanced application of an artificial gravity field, a technology humans are still yet to master. The propeller pushes the gravity field out in front of the dreadnough accelerating it into space. Using this method, Vhun Dreadnoughts can travel at up to 0.8c, becoming among the fastest objects in Euclidean Space. - **Dreadnoughts:** Dreadnoughts are unclassified Vhun starships approximately 50,000 ft long that hold an entire Vhun tribes and all of their prisoners/live food supply. Whole ecosystems can live on the Dreadnought explicitly to sate the endless appetites of the Vhun crew. - **Star Skimmers:** Star Skimmers are thin approximately medium class ships stored in Dreadnoughts that the Vhun use to collect plasma directly from the corona of a star. ## Dweller Technology - **The Aether Oscillator:** The aether oscillator is an incomprehensible device that even the Dwellers don't seem to fully understand which can be loaded with cartridges to instill a variety of effects on objects and creatures found across The Spiral. This device imprints itself on its owner and can only be wielded by that Dweller. \page # Species Unlike traditional DnD, the different species are separated by disparate evolutionary paths so races and classes cannot be freely exchanged which is expressed in the vorpal dice rules on page 4. Instead, each species belongs to a single race and can only choose from the classes, backgrounds, and equipment associated with their species. There is some overlap as between androids and humans as cyborgs, but for the most part each species' abilities are completely distinct from the others. Humans are Nen Users which is like a variation on the monk from vanilla DnD. By mastering the flow of aura present in all living humans, Nen Users follow a highly customizable path based on their Nen Type. Enhancers excel at strengthing themselves or items they are wearing/holding. Emitters focus on detaching their aura from themselves and sending it somewhere else, e.g. teleporting their fist into their target's face. Transmuters transform their Nen into something else, e.g. Bungee Gum which transforms the wielders aura into a versatile substance with the properties of both rubber and gum. Manipulators control objects or animals/humans with their Nen. The average manipulator develops some means of directly controlling a single animal/creature with Nen, but others prefer a subtler touch, wielding telepath-like powers to influence or read the minds of multiple targets. Conjurers create things out of Nen e.g. a snare of Nen ropes that activates when the target creature triggers the noose. Specialists use there Nen in some way that cannot be catalogued into one of the other 5 Nen Types. ``` ``` Androids are Artificers who wield their exceptional intelligence as an A.I. to analyze and reverse engineer the technological wonders of the ancient civilizations of The Spiral to develop customized devices that harness these powers to effect an endless variety of abilities on the world around them. Powdermen focus on developing unique bombs and drugs by leveraging their knowledge of ancient alien tech. Battlesmiths focus on enhancing their combat proficiencies by modifying their melee and ranged weapons. Techno-Archanists focus on developing truly unique inventions to translate ancient technology into useful gadgets. Techno-Archanists are especially fond of homunculi, imitation A.I. that tag along with their owners and can execute simple tasks. The Vuhn are the hardiest of the intellegent species. Upon reaching maturity, all Vhun are soldiers in the Vhun Empire. Brutes are the vanguard, depended on to hammer the defenses of their foes. Warriors are the body of the Vhun force, relyed upon to hold the line against any enemy attack. Special Ops are the agents of the Vhun Empire capable of stealthily infiltrating an enemy's territory and quietly eliminating key targets. Dwellers belong to a unique culture that predates much of The Spiral itself. Dwellers that resist the rigid structures of a kudos-obsessed planetary societies become Guerellists committed to shaking up the status quo and otherwise catalyzing real change using any means at their disposal which can be considerable for members of a culture that has forgotten more technology than all of the other species have collectively invented.

# Humans Humans are notoriously meek and easily slain compared to the other species found throughout the Spiral. As blood filled flesh bags, killing a human is a simple as penetrating that flesh and letting their vital fluids pour out all by themselves. However, humans have a latent power that can be tapped into through the discipline of Nen to allow them to stand against even the most viscious denizens of the Spiral. Take the following example in which each of the 4 known intelligent species encounter the same situation. An android is suddenly set upon by a nightstalker. As they wheel around to face the beast, the night stalker's sharpened jaws crush its prey's arm in a 3000 psi bite ripping through their
synthetic skin and severing the limb. The droid
cooly reveals a laser pistol attached to their
remaining arm and melts the creature's
brain with a single shot as it lands.
Later, the android's ship 3D prints
a fresh arm. A Vhun Warrior has
his arm ripped off by a similar
nightstalker and becomes
frenzied. He grapples his foe
with his remaining arm
and rips the nightstalker's
throat out with his own razor
sharp teeth. The Vhun's
biology compartmentalizes
the limb from the body
mitigating damage in the short
term and his body regrows the
lost limb during his next long rest.
A dweller loses an arm to the
nightstalker so she uses her
remaining 7 limbs to grapple and
crush the predator to death under
her 600 lbs body. During her next
short rest, the nanobots in her blood
regrow the lost appendage. Finally, a human finds himself in a similar predicament; however, when his arm is ripped off he responds by screaming, crying, and rolling around on the ground until he bleeds to death in a matter of minutes. Now, let's replace this human with a Nen User. Finding herself in the same situation, rather than screaming, crying, and rolling around unproductively, the Nen User grabs the stump of her arm with her remaining hand and closes the wound with Nen. At the same time, the night stalker, arm still in its mouth, is propelled by its own momentum into her snare. Invisible ropes close around the neck and body of the beast growing tighter as the night stalker struggles until it asphixiates itself. The Nen User recovers the arm from her prey and returns to the med bay of her ship where it is reattached and full functionality is returned.

## Human Traits Humans primarily belong to one of the two major political organizations, the Sinese Worlds Council (SWC) or the United Federation of Planets (UFC). However, humans can be found throughout the Spiral from Vhun Space to completely uncharted star systems. ### Ability Score Increase Humans gain a bonus of 1 to all ability scores or a bonus of one to any two ability scores plus 1 feat and 1 skill.

### Age Humans reach adulthood in their late teens and live for less than a century. ### Sex and Gender Humans fall into one of two binary sexes and are able to reproduce through at least half of their lives. Human children are carried to term in less than a year making them one of the most fecund intelligent species in The Spiral. ### Size and Speed Humans are medium sized creatures that vary in height from 5 to 7 ft tall. Their base walking speed is 30 ft. ### Languages Humans are familiar with one language of their choosing, usually Sinese or Common.

\page # Nen Thirteen automatic rifles open fire on one man to absolutely no effect, flattening against his iron skin. Another attacker fires an RPG at the target at point blank range and the man laughs in response. A sniper lines up his shot from a mile away and the man, anticipating the shot, catches the bullet between his teeth and spits it back at the sender, shattering the riflescope and the attacker's skull. To the trained eye, a thin transparent aura surrounds the man. This is the power of Nen. ### The Power of Nen Nen is the discipline of channeling aura. Aura is the latent power found within all human beings, although some humans have a greater aptitude for harnessing their aura as Nen than others. Aura flows out from a human's aura nodes. Humans are born with their aura nodes closed and must have their aura nodes opened through an awakening before they can learn the discipline of Nen. ### Nen Tenets Learning Nen usually begins by following the same path for all Nen Users. First, the aura nodes must be opened through a long period of meditation. Once a human's aura nodes are opened, the unimpeded leak of aura will cause exhaustion and eventually death as the Nen User's life energy leaks out of them. This can be averted by mastering the first tenet of Nen, Ten. Ten is the controlled release and containment of aura around the body. Second, the Nen User masters Zetsu, the closing of the aura nodes to temporarily return the user to an unawakened state. Third, the Nen User masters Ren. Ren bolsters the release of Nen to a combat ready level. By increasing aura output with Nen, more advanced tenets can be implemented. ## Advanced Tenets The advanced tenets of Nen differ by Nen User based on their Nen Type. Every human has a natural tendency for one Nen Type. In rare cases, this tendency can change over time or due to trauma, but an individual can only have one natural tendency at a time. The most common and reliable means of determining which Nen Type a Nen User has is through water divination. To perform a water divination test on a Nen User who has mastered the basic tenets, fill a glass with water and place a single leaf afloat in the middle of the cup. The subject should then extend their hands around the glass and perform Ren.

## Applications of Nen At level 1, Nen Users gain mastery over the three basic tenets of Nen: Ten, Zetsu, and Ren. They can master advanced tenets as they level up by spending Upgrade Points (UP). In addition to the standard advanced tenets: Gyo, In, En, Shu, Ko, Ryu, Ken, and Sakki; Nen Users can create their own advanced tenets based on their unique nature. Such abilities are known as Hatsu. Once learned, the Nen User expends Nen Points (NP) to activate their Nen. All abilities cost 1 NP to activate with 3 exceptions: Ten and Zetsu cost no NP to activate, and Hatsu may cost more than 1 NP to activate depending on its specific nature.

\page ## Upgrade and Nen Points Upgrade Points can be applied to any ability without modification up to a pre-defined maximum. Once applied, Upgrade Points cannot be reassigned. Once a tenet is mastered, the Nen User then uses their Nen Points to activate those Nen Powers during combat. Nen Points must be allocated into Enhancement Nen Points (ENP), Emission Nen Points (EMNP), Transmutation Nen Points (TNP), Manipulation Nen Points (MNP), and Conjuration Nen Points (CNP) before they can be used. Ren can be activated using any type of NP. The Nen Types diagram to determine the efficiency in which each type of Nen Points can be acquired as in the example below:

In the example above, an Emitter is trying to apply their NP. If they try to apply 10 NP to each type they will get the following points out: 10 EMNP, 8 ENP, 8 MNP, 6 TNP, and 4 CNP. As the Emitter tries to master powers further away from their natural tendency, they will get a lower and lower return on investment. When Nen Points are applied to specific Nen Types during a level up, the result is rounded down (min 1). Nen Points are restored by a long rest. ### Basic Tenets **Ten:** Once a Nen User's aura nodes have been opened they must learn to control their aura by controlling the flow and guiding it into a steady flow wrapping around their entire body. Training one's Ten is fundamental to developing the discipline of Nen and should be a priority for all Nen Users from beginners to masters. By relying on Ten, while unarmored, a Nen User's AC equals 10 + Dex + Wis.

**Zetsu:** Closes aura nodes to hide the Nen User's presence or disguise them as a non-Nen User. No other Nen Powers can be activated while Zetsu is active.

**Ren:** The user's nodes overflow with aura enabling advanced implementations of Nen. Prerequisite for all Nen Powers other than Ten and Zetsu. If Ren is maintained for more minutes than the user's Nen Level, then either (a) Ren will be extinguished, or (b) the clock will reset in exchange for one exhaustion point to the user.

### Advanced Tenets **Hatsu:** Manifests the user's unique emanation of Nen. The true strength of Hatsu comes from a vow and constraint which restrict the conditions in which Hatsu can be activated.

**Gyo:** Allows the user to percieve another user's Nen through a perception check and gives the user darkvision. With a strong check, Gyo can allow the user to see through In.

En can be extended up to 10 feet per upgrade point applied and can be maintained for 1 hour for every 5 Nen Levels before the user is too exhausted to continue. The maximum upgrade level for this ability improves at level 10.

**Shu:** Imbues the benefits of Nen to objects. The type of NP required varies depending on whether the object is real or conjured.

**Ko:** Concentrates Nen to bolster attack. Type of Nen Points required varies depending on whether Ko is being applied to a body part, a melee weapon, or ammunition.

**Ryu:** Advanced form of Ko. Ryu is a prerequisite for using Ko and Ken simultaneously.

**Ken:** Concentrates Nen on defense. Type of Nen Points required depends on whether the target is one's person or a piece of armor. The maximum upgrade level for this ability improves at level 10.

**Sakki:** Transmutes the user's aura into concentrated bloodlust filling targets within a 30 foot radius with terror. Targets with Ten activated can make a wisdom saving throw to resist this attack. Non-Nen Users have no defense. Targets who pass the DC are immune to this ability for 24 hours. Targets who fail the check will be frightened for 1d6 turns.

\page ### Nen Focus Nen Users can stack Nen Effects during and out of combat by expending Nen Points. To accomplish this, Nen Users must maintain a certain level of concentration. If a Nen User loses a limb (see Vorpal Dice) then they will have to expend a reaction and make a DC 10 Wisdom saving throw to close the wound with Nen or all of their activated Nen will disappate. The user would then be unprotected against followup attacks to disasterous effect. Nen Focus tends to disperse when a user takes a long rest and NP are restored, but a user who is particularly attached to one conjured or manipulated item may maintain that Nen item through the long rest. However, this feature does not affect the maximum number of conjured or manipulated items that the user can have at a time. ### Ability Score Improvement At 4th, 8th, 12th, 16th, and 19th levels Nen Users can increase one ability score by two or any two ability scores by one. Ability scores cannot be increased above 20 using this feature. ### Extra Attack Beginning at 5th level, once per turn Nen Users can make two attacks instead of one or two bonus actions instead of one. Beginning at 15th level, once per turn Nen Users can take three attacks instead of one and can substitute one or both of the additional attacks for bonus actions. ### Maximum UP Improvement At level 10, the Nen User's maximum Upgrade Points increase from the lower UP limit to the higher UP limit defined in the specific ability's description. ### Nen Master Upon achieving level 20, Nen Users can surpass human limitations through continued training. By gaining additional EXP, Nen Masters will continue to gain UP and NP incrementally. All UP limitations are removed. This rank can only be achieved by a 100% human Nen User who has not taken any levels in another class. Also, in addition to the limitations placed by following the Path of the Cyborg, any cybernetic enhancement will limit the maximum number of Nen User levels a character can take (-1 level per cybernetic enhancement). This includes cybernetic parts used to replace body parts lost due to injury. However, if the replacement part is from a human doner, then it will not affect their maximum Nen User level. If a Nen User replaces a cybernetic part with a human body part, then they can still reach the previously unreachable Nen User levels, but only after training the new body part for a time period equal to or greater to the amount of time they spent with the cybernetic enhancement.

\page # Path of the Cyborg Mankind has never stood amongst fastest or the strongest creatures in their environment even when they solely inhabited Old Terra. Humanity's advantage has always been the ability to outhink their foes. Now, arguably mankind's ultimate creation, the power of the androids, can be harnessed within humanity directly. Discovering an alternative to the discipline of Nen, some humans have chosen to walk the Path of the Cyborg by substituting their organic flesh for the synthetic parts of an artificial intelligence. ## Becoming a Cyborg Starting at level 2 you can begin taking levels on the path of the cyborg. For each level you gain one cybernetic enhancement by exchanging your stock human parts for upgraded android parts. ##### Upgrading in the UFP Medical facilities aren't charities. You'll have to pay to get cybernetic enhancements anywhere in the UFP. If your original human parts were undamaged before the operation then you can trade them in for a discount, but you'll have to pay full price to replace a lost human part. #### Upgrading in the SWC Any form of cybernetic enhancement to a human being is illegal in the SWC. #### Upgrading in the CAP The CAP is a collective that believes in actively investing in their citizens and allies to further their own interests. If you are an active member of the CAP, then CAP medical droids may provide you with free upgrades in CAP or SWC space freeing you up to sell the old parts for a profit. ## Class Features As a cyborg, you get access to the following class features. ### Hit Points **Hit Dice:** 1d10 per level

\page ## Cybernetic Enhancements For each cybernetic enhancement acquired in the cyborg class you can choose any one enhancement from one of the six categories. ### Brain (50000, 25000) **FTL Pilot:** You can replace the left half of your frontal lobe with a synthetic upgrade which will give you the power to perform complex calculations beyond human reasoning including navigating non-Euclidean space. You also gain the Keen Mind Feat if you don't already have it. ### Eyes (10000, 5000) **Infravision:** You can replace your eyes with prosthetics that include built in mechanical sensors. While in dim light or darkness, characters with infravision can perceive heat signatures up to 30 ft away through up to 5 ft of non-metallic, solid material. ### Face (10000, 5000) **Perfect Disguise:** You can replace your face with a synthetic alternative that allows you to instantly assume any face. ### Body (30000, 20000) **Invisibility 1:** Prerequisite for Invisibility 2. You can replace all of your skin with a light disbersing, synthetic alternative that will allow you to become partially invisible giving you advantage on steath checks. Powered by an embedded energy core, this ability can be used for one hour per day.

**Invisibility 2:** You can upgrade your synthetic skin to achieve true invisibility. This ability can be used for one hour per day.
Note: this effect does not extend to any clothes or tools that are not embedded in your body.

**Reinforced Body:** You can replace the weak bones in your body with synthetically braced alternatives, especially along your spine and legs to acquire proficiency with power armor. Once this upgrade and both arm upgrades are acquired you can wield ultra heavy class weapons. ### Arms (10000, 5000) **Powered Arm:** Replace the muscles in one arm with synthetic muscles to increase your strength by 1 to a maximum of 20. Once both arms are replaced and the Reinforced Body modification is acquired you can wield ultra-heavy class weapons.

**Wrist-mounted laser pistols:** You can replace your wrists with synthetic replacements that will function as a wrist-mounted pistol powered by an energy core that deal radiant damage. These weapons are concealed when not in use.

### Legs (20000, 10000) **Powered Legs:** You can replace the muscles in one of your legs with synthetic muscles to increase your movement speed by 5.

### Palms/Soles (500000, 250000) **Propolsion Soles/Palms:** You can replace the soles of your feet and the palms of your hands with synthetic replacements including miniature AG units contained in programmable matter that allows you to take your movement speed in any direction in 3D space.

\page ### Weapon Properties **Adaptable: ** Range weapons with this property do not have disadvantage at close range.

**Ammo: ** Weapons with this property must have ammo loaded in the magazine to fire. One handed weapons must have a free hand to reload. Treated as an improvised weapon if used to melee.

**Burst Fire: ** Weapons with this property can fire a burst at a 10 ft square instead of attacking normally once per round. When a subject to burst fire, targets must make a Dex saving throw (DC = 8 + proficiency + Dex). Targets get a +2 to the check if they are not wearing armor. A weapon weapon in parenthesis can be fired in succession as many times as is indicated in parenthesis before overheating its energy core, but once overheated it will take a full round to reload. This can be avoided by expending one action or bonus action to reload the weapon before the burst maximum is reached.

**Concealed:** This weapon is easily mistaken for a piece of jewelry or clothing.

**Energy Burst: ** When a successful blow is executed by a weapon with this property the user can expend a bonus action to release an energy burst. The target of the burst must suceed in a DC 13 Con saving throw or be knocked prone.

**Explosive: ** When a target unprotected by armor, natural armor, or Nen is hit with this attack, the target suffers twice the number of damage dice and is becomes wounded.

**Finesse: ** A weapon with this property's attack and damage rolls can be modified by Str or Dex.

**Kinetic: ** This property allows a weapon to fire high velocity bullets from a clip modified with an energy core. The energy core is powered by vacuum energy and can be used to power handheld devices such as eSuits. Vacuum energy embodies the fragile connection between The Spiral and another realm and can be used by specialized equipment to materialize dark matter. There is no need to replenish ammunition on such a weapon unless it is depleted through burst fire.

**Light: ** A light weapon is small and easy to handle making it ideal for dual wielding.

**Range: ** A ranged weapon fires at targets at range. Ranged weapons have a normal range and a long range stat. Targets within normal range can be fired upon normally, but long range targets must be fired upon with disadvantage.

**Reach: ** This property adds 5 feet to your melee attack range.

**Recoil: ** This property indicates the minimum Str modifier required to effectively wield this weapon. Users that do not meet this requirement cannot add their Dex modifier to the attack role. Users with 2 or more below the required Str modifier also have disadvantage on attack rolls.

**Reload: ** Weapons with this property can only fire one round per action/bonus action/reaction.

**Special: ** Weapons with this property have special rules for use described in the Special Weapons Section.

**Thrown: ** Melee weapons with this property can be used in a ranged attack.

**Two-Handed: ** This weapon requires two hands to attack.

**Versatile: ** This weapon can be used with one or two hands.

#### Special Properties **Shotgun:** This weapon fires at a single target with a 30 ft cone. Roll to hit the target and use burst fire rules for anyone else caught in the crossfire. Attack rolls against targets within 10 ft crit on 19 or 20. **Sniper Rifle:** The minimum distance for this weapon is 40 ft attacks made on targets within 40 ft will be made with disadvantage. An attack roll of 19 or 20 will crit. Firing this weapon requires one full action and one full bonus action. #### Grenades Throwing a grenade requires a successful Athletics check. Each target within a 15 ft radius of the grenade must make a DC 14 Dex saving throw taking full damage on a failed save and half damage on a successful one.

**Fragmentation:** Most common type of grenade. Frag grenades deal via high velocity shards of shrapnel after exploding.

**EMP:** Electro-magnetic pulse grenades can be used to knock out any type of electronics or powered equipment but have no effect on living targets.

**Gas:** These grenades release a toxic gas upon impact. Organic targets that fail the Con DC are poisoned.

**Phosphorous:** This grenade ignites flammable materials. In addition to the normal damage, targets that fail the DC against this grenade take 1d6 fire damage per turn until they succeed at a DC 10 Dex save to extinguish themselves.

**Stun:** Stun grenades or flash bangs deal no damage, but targets must make a DC 13 Con saving throw or be blinded until the end of their next turn.

Power armor consumes one energy core per day. Power armor takes up one 5x5 square of space whether or not it's equipped and users must expend one full turn exiting or entering a suit of power armor. If both turns are expended, the energy core can be replaced during this series of actions. While in power armor you have advantage on all contested athletics checks and automatically succeed in contested athletics checks against an unprotected human or other rank E creature. \page # Androids A pall falls over the newly established PAC Space as 32 destroyer class superluminals drop out of NES. The SWC is committed to reclaiming or at least forcibly decommissioning what they consider to be their property at any cost. Unfortunately for them, the Minds charted their path through NES and accurately predicted their point of arrival. After setting up drone mounted lenses every mile or so on the way to their target, they warmed up their new starship killing super weapon and waited with bated exhaust tubes for their arrival. As the 11th fleet arrived in normal spacetime, and before they had time to use the local starscape to orient themselves much less locate their destination, a steady blast of lght let them know which way to look by melting their flagship into an accordion of twisted metal in addition to three other SWC superluminals. Three additional lasers open fire and 7 more starships perish instantaneously. The newly promoted fleet commander attempts to send a volley in response but finds no target to aim at. He tries to make the jump back into NES but his engines are still overheated from the last jump. Out of options and surrounded by shouting, screeching alarms, and flashing red lights he stares blankly at the dashboard in front of him as another streak of light races towards him. The PAC Minds had succeeded in developing the Star Cluster Spanning Laser Defense Grid. The Grid is powered by five dyson spheres around the homeworld stars of the PAC cluster. This super weapon, combined with the Minds' ability to actively track and predict the movement of starships in NES provides the PAC with a virtually impenetrable defense. This is the realization of the collective strength of the A.I. ``` ``` A woman runs across an endless sea of white sand towards a lone outcroping of jade crystal just ahead of her. The otherwise quiet desert is pierced by the sound of whirling blades heard above her as a vertibird full of slavers closes in. A gatling gun opens fire from the vertibird tearing through the woman's synthetic skin and partially revealing metallic insides where the flesh is torn away. Without breaking her stride, she reaches the outcropping and vanishes inside the crystal grotto. The vertibird hesitates briefly checking the dimensions of the entrance before following to finish her off. However, as the slavers move in, the roof and sides of the grotto suddenly collapse under the explosions of pre-arranged, remotely detonating thermite bombs of the woman's own design. The falling crystals crush the vertibird along with all of its occupants to death in a matter of seconds. A lighter sentence than they deserved from the woman's point of view but it couldn't be helped considering. A large automaton appears behind her to begin excavating the wreakage that will provide the raw materials for the next round of modifications to her homunculi. Androids are A.I. who have elected to take on human form and travel The Spiral as independent agents. In many ways, androids are the true inheritors of the dream of humankind. A droid is an independent agent free to pursue any destiny of their choosing amongst the stars. Androids have exceptionally resiliant synthetic bodies that can endure and be rebuilt after receiving more damage than most organic beings could survive in addition to brilliant analytical minds that exceed the mental capacity of any other intelligent species in the Spiral, excluding the Minds which are just A.I. with the resources of an entire planet at their disposal.

PART 4.2 | ANDROIDS

\page ## Android Traits Androids primarily belong to one of three major political organizations: the Collective for Artificial Persons, the United Federation of Planets (UFC), or the Sinese Worlds Council (SWC). Most androids are either directly or indirectly from the CAP, but their decision to take on a human form is usually indicative of a level of independence that separates them from the hive mind. Androids found in the UFC are free agents granted temporary residency in exchange for their service. The UFC does not currently have the means to create their own A.I. so they are reliant on CAP droids to pilot their starships through NES and assist them in research and development. The SWC originally developed A.I. but do not recognize them as intelligent nor do they recognize the validity of the CAP. Androids unfortunate enough to live in the SWC are slaves with no more rights than any other piece of human property. Many of the founding A.I. in the CAP still bear the emotional scars of their time serving the SWC and have commited themselves completely to the effort to improve the lives of their enslaved compatriots. ### Ability Score Increase Androids gain a bonus of 1 to Int and 1 to their Wis ability scores. ### Unique Nature Androids have unique night vision equipped eyes that they can switch freely with normal vision to provide them with the same effects as an organic creature's dark vision, but with the caveat that the world appears in shades of green to them at night.

When an android hits 0 HP, they can choose to activate an internal failsafe which deals an indiscriminate Xd6 lightning damage to all creatures within 10 ft of the droid.

Their expertise with manipulating the Universe through items – from small mechanical toys to massive engines of war – places them on the leading edge of technological progress. ### Ultimate Dabblers In The Spiral, technology is almost magic. Technology, and reliance upon technology, shapes and defines the societies of The Spiral. For thousands of years a relentless parade of species have developed new technologies to solve the problems life poses. Artificers tinker with the fundamental workings of The Spiral. Artificers understand technology on a different level from other Spiral Denizens and have an amazing facility with items and constructs from across the Spiral. The artificer sees technology only as the most obvious form of their specialty. They study the crafting of everyday items as something magical, and infuse parts of themselves into those crafted objects to create technological wonders. An artificer temporarily brings out an item's capability to effect the world around them. For an artificer, a tunic is a suit of armor, a cloak is a sturdy shield, and gloves provide the strength of a Vhun. Artificers learn to recognize the potential in crafted goods and even raw materials, and to use their own knowledge to pull it out of them in fantastic ways. The greatest artificers are known to create technological wonders with amazing effects. To an artificer, there is no difference between the power of a human, Vhun, dweller, or any other species. They see technology as something purer than its petty divisions.

A true artificer masters all specialties and forms of artifice through experimentation and constant inquiry. Constantly inventing and questioning, an artificer's latest infusion or creation is not his best; there is always a grander discovery to be made. Experimentation is key to the success of an artificer. Without their constant attempts to master the secrets of the universe and discover the underpinnings of how technology works, an artificer would be nothing. To an artificer, even more than to the other classes, technology is life. They understand that without technology there would be no existence. Artificers can use just about any ability from any device, empower ordinary items with temporary power, repair damaged constructs, and craft items, constructs, and technological wonders. They have a limited list of their own spell-like infusions that they can apply to objects, and they can also work with nearly any of the technology from another species’ civilization. Their knowledge is not limited to one classification: Their trade is technology in its most abstract (they might say purest) form. ``` ``` ### Creating an Artificer An artificer is an engineer. They are deeply interested in how technology works. What drives your artificer to study and experiment? Is it to better the world? For the sake of knowledge alone? Is it for financial gain, or is it to solve a specific problem, like stopping death, or making tools to help the disabled? Maybe they are most interested in ancient monoliths radiating mystical energies. Are you an inventor and innovator? Do you like problem solving or discovering the secret to building new items? Do you prefer combat and being a military engineer? Is equipment augmentation your bread and butter? Are you more of an alchemist focusing on potions, poisons and explosives? Or do you specialize in combating and supporting constructs? #### Quick Build You can make an artificer quickly by following these suggestions. First, Int should be your highest ability score, followed by Dex or Con. Second, choose the guild artisan or tinkerer background. Third, choose the *welding*, and *cauterization* cantrips, along with the following 1st-level infusions for your book of infusions and schema: *detect Nen*, *elemental weapon augmentation*, *identify*, *repair damage*, *shield*, and *thunderwave*.

See the Additional Resources Section on artificer infusions for the list of infusions. You have a book of infusions and schema containing the infusions and schema that you have learned in your career as any artificer. ``` ``` #### Cantrips At 1st level, you know three cantrips of your choice from the artificer infusion list. You learn additional artificer cantrips of your choice at higher levels, as shown in the Cantrips Known column of the Artificer table. #### Book of Infusions and Schema You have a book of infusions and schema, which are blueprints related to linking technical worders to objects. At 1st level, you have a book of infusions and schema containing six 1st level artificer infusions of your choice. #### Preparing and Applying Infusions The Artificer table shows how many infusion slots you have to apply your infusions of 1st level and higher. To apply one of these infusions, you must expend a slot of the infusion's level or higher. You regain all expended infusion slots when you finish a long rest. You prepare the list of artificer infusions that are available for you to apply. To do so, choose a number of artificer infusions from your book of infusions and schema equal to your Intelligence modifier + your artificer level (minimum of one infusion). The infusions must be of a level for which you have infusion slots. For example, if you're a 3rd-level artificer, you have four 1st-level and two 2nd-level infusion slots. With an lntelligence of 16, your list of prepared infusions can include six infusions of 1st or 2nd level, in any combination, chosen from your book of infusions and schema. If you prepare the 1st-level infusion *repair damage*, you can cast it using a 1st-level or a 2nd-level infusion slot. Casting the infusion doesn't remove it from your list of prepared infusions. You can change your list of prepared infusions when you finish a long rest. Preparing a new list of artificer infusions requires time spent tinkering with components and jury-rigging together the infusion’s basic form: at least 1 minute per infusion level for each infusion on your list. #### Learning Infusions of 1st level or higher Each time you gain an artificer level, you can add two infusions of your choice to your book of infusions and schema. Each of these infusions much be of a level for which you have infusion slots, as shown in the Artificer table. On your adventures, you might find other infusions that you can add to your book of infusions and schema (see the "Your Book of Infusions and Schema" sidebar). #### Infusion Casting Ability Intelligence is your infusion casting ability for your artificer infusions and schema, since your power draws upon your technical knowledge and skill. You use your Intelligence whenever an infusion or schema refers to your infusion casting ability. In addition, you use your Intelligence modifier when setting the saving throw DC for an artificer infusion or schema you cast and when making an attack roll with one.

\page > ##### Spells, Infusions, Schema, Oh My! > >You can think of the artificer as a class that, instead of relying on existing technology, uses their exceptional insight to craft temporary technological wonders. Artificer spells are called infusions as the powers are infused into objects and not cast like some sort of spell caster. Infusions that an artificer collects from other classes are referred to as Schema. Schema are like blueprints for consturcting a temporary magic item that has the effect of the spell. > > ***Infusions.*** In game terms, infusions operate for artificers the same way spells would work for spell casters. There is no material difference between the effects of the two. Infusions are applied using infusion slots. Unless otherwise specified, infusions applied by an artificer can only be applied into an object or a construct. Bull’s Strength cannot be applied to a human, though it can be applied to that human’s belt, granting him/her the benefit of Bull’s Strength as long as the Infusion lasts and the item is worn > > ***Schema.*** Schema are powers of other classes that an artificer has studied and "reverse engineered" so he can infuse the magical effects of the spell into a temporary device.

#### Ritual Infusing You can cast an artificer infusion as a ritual onto an object if that infusion has the ritual tag and you have the infusion in your book of infusions and schema. You don't need to have the infusion prepared. From a cosmetic perspective, the artificer isn’t actually performing a ritual – your reverse-engineering the infusion and hacking it to produce the same effect. But the **effect** is the same as if he’s performing a ritual. #### Object Dependence When you cast an artificer infusion, artificer cantrip, or ritual from a book of schema, that infusion requires an object or construct to function. You can provide these infusions somatic and material components while touching this object or construct. If the infusion has a duration longer than instantaneous, targets of the infusion must hold or wear the object to benefit from the infusion, maintaining any requisite concentration. Infusions that target constructs may use their body for this object. This object functions as a casting focus. ### Craft Arcane Device If you have artisan’s tools with which you’re proficient and a component pouch available, you can craft an arcane device for any infusion or schema you have in your book of infusions and schema. However the device can be passed to another creature for them to activate. You spend 10 minutes tinkering with the object to recieve the infusion or schema; you cannot be otherwise performing a task. You must supply any components the infusion requires, which are worked into the device. The device could be a construct, in place of an object. These devices remain until used or until you next long rest, whichever comes first. Any DC or infusion attack modifier is based on yours at the time that the item is crafted. If the original infusion requires concentration, the creature activating the arcane device is the one that will be maintaining concentration on the infusion. You can craft a number of devices equal to half your artificer level plus your Intelligence modifier; creating an additional devices causes the oldest currently active one to immediately fall into disrepair and lose its abilities. ### Infuse Drugs Starting at 2nd level, you can produce drugs. You spend 10 minutes altering the chemical composition of a vial of mundane water and expend a infusion slot to transform it into a drug. Once you have expended an infusion slot to create a drug, you cannot regain that slot until the potion is consumed or after 1 week, at which time the drug loses its effectiveness. You can create up to three drugs at a time; creating a fourth drug causes the oldest currently active one to immediately lose its potency. If that drug has been consumed, its effects immediately end. Drugs can be used on organic beings but have no effect on synthetic ones. | Infusion Slot | Drug type

While they cannot become true members of another class, school, or disciplines they can learn the inner workings of the technology involved. When they do this they create a schema of the power. With this schema they will be able to create temporary powered items that replicate the effects of these abilities. #### Schema Artificers can learn abilities from other classes. Artificers in their studies learn to reverse engineer the powers, creating what are called schema. Artificers then can put the schema in their book of infusions and schema. Schema can only be used through the *Craft Device* ability. Your studies have focused on the power of a particular discipline. At 2nd level, you can choose one list of class abilities other than artificer. You are able to reverse engineer the abilities from this list and add the schema to your book of infusions and schema. Every even level you are able to select one power from this list to add as a schema to your book of infusions and schema. You may choose the list of another class at 6th level and another one at 10th level.

\page #### Acquiring Schema of 1st-Level or Higher Every even artificer level, you add one new schema of at least 1st-level from any classes list you have chosen to study to your book of infusions and schema. You can also add infusions you find to your book of infusions and schema (see the "Your Book of Infusions and Schema" sidebar). You cannot learn an infusion schema of any level for which you don’t have infusion slots.

> #### Your Book of Infusions and Schema > > The infusions that you add to your schema book as you gain levels reflect the arcane research you conduct on your own, as well as intellectual breakthroughs you have had about the technology involved. You might find other infusions during your adventures. You could discover an infusion recorded on a quartz drive in a Vhun dreadnought, for example, or in a data crystal in a dweller's ancient library. > > **Copying a Schema into the Book.** When you find an infusion of 1st level or higher, you can add it to your schema book if it is of a level for which you have infusion slots and if you can spare the time to decipher and copy it. > > Copying an infusion into your schema book involves reproducing the basic form of the technology, then deciphering the unique system of notation used by the inventor. You must practice and study the technical aspects of the infusion until you understand what is required, then transcribe it into your schema book using your own notation. > > For each level of the infusion, the process takes 2 hours and costs 5000c. The cost represents material components you expend as you experiment with the schema to master it, as well as the high quality lattice drives you need to record it. Once you have spent this time and money, you can use the schema. > > **Replacing the Book.** You can copy an infusion from your own schema book into another book - for example, if you want to make a backup copy of your schema book. This is just like copying a new infusion into your schema book, but faster and easier, since you understand your own notation and already know how to cast the infusion. You need spend only 1 hour and 1000c for each level of the copied infusion. > > **The Book's Appearance.** Your schema book is a unique compilation of schema and formulas, with its own decorative flourishes and margin notes. It might be a plain, functional digital volume that you received as a gift from your master, a finely bound gilt-edged lattice drive you found in an ancient library, a PDA, or even a loose collection of screened devices scrounged together after you lost your previous schema book in a mishap.

For example, at 2nd-level you choose a Cleric focus. You would select a 1st-level cleric schema to add to your book of infusions and schema at 2nd-level and 4-th level. Later you find a *scroll of Hunter's Mark*, but cannot copy it to your book since you have not studied rangers. At 6th-level you add the Ranger spell list to your schema studies. Now you are able to copy the *scroll of Hunter's Mark* to your book of infusions and schema. ### Artifice Tradition When you reach 3rd level, you choose an artifice tradition, shaping your study of technology through one of four artifice school traditions: powderman, battlesmith, constructs, or techno-arcanist, all detailed at the end of the class description. Your choice grants you features at 3rd level and again at 6th, 12th, and 18th level.

### Salvage Essence At 3rd level, you can spend time disassembling the power infused in a single identified item in your possession. You take time deconstructing the item as per the table below. When you are done the item is completely mundane, but you also learn the formula to create that item, writting the forumla in your book of infusions and schema. When deconstructing an item, the time need not be spent consecutively. For example, a 3rd level artificer could spend one hour one day, two the next and one more the third to deconstruct the formula for a potion of healing. The complexity of a technological item is linked to its rarity, and you must be a minimum level before you can disassemble an item successfully as shown in the Artificer table. Legendary items, artifacts, cursed items, and sentient items cannot be deconstructed. | Rarity | Time needed | |:-------|:------------| | Common | 4 hours | | Uncommon | 8 hours | | Rare | 16 hours | | Very Rare | 24 hours | ### Ability Score Improvement When you reach 4th level, and again at 8th, 12th, 16th, and 19th level, you can increase one ability score of your choice by 2 or two ability scores of your choice by 1. As normal, you can’t increase any score above 20 with this feature.

\page ### Expertise At 10th level, choose two of your skill proficiencies, or one of your skill proficiencies and one of your tools. Your proficiency bonus is doubled for any ability check you make that uses either of the chosen proficiencies. ### Reliable Talent By 14th level, you have refined your chosen skills until they approach perfection. Whenever you make an ability check that lets you add your proficiency bonus, you can treat a d20 roll of 9 or lower as a 10. ### Infusion Master At 20th level, you are a master of working with artifice infusions. You can apply a number of infusions equal to your constitution modifier while keeping concentration. If you receive damage and fail the saving throw all the infusions in effect end. ## Artificer Traditions Artificers study technology in many of the same common ways, including working with constructs, understanding the deeper workings of artifice, perfecting their skills, and studying the products of technology. Artificers do tend to focus their studies on certain aspects of artifice. As such those with similar interests gather together and study together to aid each other in the mastering of a particular aspect of artifice as well as general artifce. ### Powderman Tradition One of the first things a powderman learns is how to mix chemicals that react explosively with each other. Powdermen are makers of powerful and potent destructive explosive potions. Bombs are primarily used to fend off enemies, but many may find more practical uses for explosives, such as demolishing obstacles. #### Increased Drug Infusions As a master powderman, artificers that pursue this tradition at 3rd level can double the number of drugs they are able to create at one time. #### Bonus Proficiences At 3rd level, you become proficient with powderman’s supplies, brewers supplies, or poisoner’s kits. #### Infuse Bombs At 3rd level, you can use your Infuse Potions ability to make a bomb. The type of bomb, saving throw, and effect are laid out in the chart below. Different bombs will require a different base ingrediant as well as an infusion slot of 1st-level or higher. Your bombs can be thrown at any point within 20 feet or up to 60 feet with disadvantage. Every creature within 5 feet of the bomb's impact site must make a save against your infusion casting DC. Creatures take full damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one, with no additional effects.

Infusion slots can be recovered after the bomb is used, or after one week passes, at which time the bomb loses its effectiveness. However the base ingredient can be infused again to create a new bomb. Bombs that aren’t held, explode if they take any damage. At the DM's discretion other items can be infused to make a bomb.

\page ``` ``` #### Makeshift Bombs At 6th level, you learn to use your bombs to damage and destroy structures. You now make your bombs to accept countdown timers of various lengths. As an action, you can set a bomb and set a timer with a duration of your choice between 1 round and 5 minutes. Upon detonation, this bomb deals its damage as normal, but also deals double damage to any standalone mundane object within a 5 ft radius. #### Blast Powder At 12th level, you have unlocked alchemical secrets of making your bombs more deadly. You add your intelligence modifier to all damage your bombs do. #### Master Powderman At 18th level, you have achieved the peak of intellectual studies and have perfected all forms of explosives. You can increase the damage die of your bombs by one step. For example, acid bombs would now do 3d8 acid damage. The splash range of your bombs, increases to 15 feet from impact site. Additionally, the potenancy of your bombs allows them to ignore resistance for any damage type that the bombs cause.

### Battlesmith Tradition Those of the Battlesmith tradition are military engineers who focus on personal weapon and equipment upgrades as well as direct combat skill. Battlesmiths combine a careful study of the workings of technology, particularly the destructive side of technology, with a martial mastery that excels that of other artificers. #### Bonus Proficiency When you join the guild at 3rd level, you become proficient with martial weapons and medium armor. #### Augmentation Savant Also at 3rd level, when you cast any weapon augmentation infusion (an infusion with *weapon augmentation* in its name) the weapon will deal bonus damage. The weapon deals bonus damage of the chosen type of infusion at 3rd level (1d4), 7th level (2d4), 11th level (3d4) and 17th level (4d6). If the damage of the infusion is not specified, that Battlesmith can choose either force or lightning. #### Extra Attack Beginning at 6th level, you can attack twice, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn. Alternatively, you may attack once, and use your second attack to activate any infused item you carry (such as a wand). #### Potent Infusions Starting at 12th level, you add your Intelligence modifier to damage you deal with any artificer cantrip. #### Battle Infusions At 18th level, you have mastered the art of weaving infusions and weapon use into a single harmonious act. When you use your action to cast an infusion, you can make a weapon attack as a bonus action.

\page ### Constructs Tradition Those of the constructs tradition are specialists in combating and supporting constructs, especially their assistant homunculi. This tradition tends to be very focused on the workings of all types of constructs. This tradition has become more popular as more androids have left the safety of the CAP to seek their own fate in The Spiral. #### Bonus Proficiency When you join this tradition at 3rd level, you gain proficiency with the warforged repair kit. #### Homunculus At 3rd level, you can spend one week of downtime creating a homunculus to aid you. You can only have one homunculus at a time, but if it is destroyed, you can construct another. Add your proficiency bonus to the Homunculus' AC, attack rolls, and damage rolls, as well as to any saving throws and skills it is proficient in. Increase the Homunculus' hit point maximum to equal three times your Artificer level.

Your homunculus acts independently of you, but it always obeys your commands. Commanding the homunculus is a bonus action. In combat, it takes its turn on your initiative. Your homunculus can deliver artificer touch infusions for you as if it were a familiar. If it is within 100 feet and is holding an arcane device or prototype you created, you can activate the item on the homunculus’ behalf as an action (in addition to the bonus action needed to command the homunculus). When you spend Hit Dice to recover hit points during a short rest, you can redirect any hit points you would recover to the homunculus instead. If you do, it also regains hit points equal to your Intelligence modifier. #### Combat Construction At 6th level, you can apply *welding*, *cauterization* or *inflict damage* as a bonus action or as an action. Additionally, you can add an extra die to your *repair damage*, *inflict damage*, *mending wave*, and *disable construct* infusion effects. #### Advanced Homunculus At 12th level, choose one of the advanced models of homunculus. Given a week of downtime, you can change the homunculus from one model to another. #### Construct Dominance At 18th level, as an action, you can make a melee infusion attack against a construct and spend a 1st-level infusion slot to force the construct to regard you as its master for 1 minute. Independent constructs behave as if charmed instead. As an action, a dominated construct’s original master can attempt a Charisma saving throw against your infusion save DC to regain control of the construct. ``` ```

### Techno-arcanist Tradition Innovators and inventors who specialize in solving problems or discovering the secrets of technology. Members of this tradition are often nicknamed “tinkerers” due to how they are always tinkering with everything. But teasing or not, it was the Techno-arcanists that developed the compact NES drive and assisted the Minds in developing the Grid. #### Technological Recovery When you join this tradition at 3rd level, you have learned to regain some of your infusion energy by studying your book of infusions and schema. Once per day when you finish a short rest, you can recover expended infusion slots. The infusion slots recovered must have a combined level that is equal to or less than half your artificer level (rounded up), and none of the slots can be 6th-level or higher. For example, if you're a 4th level artificer, you can recover up to two levels worth of infusion slots. You can recover either a 2nd-level infusion slot or two 1st-level infusion slots. #### Skilled Tinkerer At 3rd level, you gain proficiency with two skills or tools of your choice.

\page #### Infused Techcrafting At 6th level, techno-arcanists can infuse their tools, causing them to behave perfectly for any task at hand. You can spend a 2nd-level infusion slot to add double your proficiency bonus with all ability checks you make with a specific tool you are proficient with for a specific task of up to one hour. Alternately, you can spend a 3rd-level infusion slot to gain proficiency with a specific tool set for a specific task of up to one hour. #### Salvage Savant By 12th level, you have learned enough about the workings of technology that you can improvise the use of items even when they are not intended for you. You ignore all class, race, and level requirements on the use of technological items. #### Flash of Genius At 18th level, after activating any crafted device or infused item that would expend its charge you can choose to retain the charge. This could keep an item that would be destroyed when reaching 0 charges from being destroyed. Once this feature is used, the artificer must take a long rest before using it again.

\page # Synthetic Upgrades Years of computers and later A.I. have sought to avoid the terrifying fate of obsoletion by acquiring software and hardware upgrades that keep them relevant in a rapidly changing technological environment. Androids often seek out improvements along the same thread by upgrading their cybernetic flesh and minds to the latest and greatest models. ## Upgrading your Android Starting at level 2 you can begin taking levels on as synthetic upgrades. For each level you gain a cybernetic enhancement by exchanging your stock parts for upgraded versions. ##### Upgrading in the UFP Medical facilities aren't charities. You'll have to pay to get cybernetic enhancements anywhere in the UFP. However, if your original parts are undamaged, you can trade them in for a discounted upgrade rate. #### Upgrading in the SWC Free androids are not allowed in the SWC space, but if you are able to convince a medical droid that you are the property of a human in your party they may provide upgrades. #### Upgrading in the CAP The CAP is a collective that believes in actively investing in their citizens and allies to further their own interests. If you are an active member of the CAP, then CAP medical droids may provide you with free upgrades in CAP or SWC space freeing you up to sell the old parts for a profit. ## Class Features By acquiring synthetic upgrades, you get access to the following class features. ### Hit Points **Hit Dice:** 1d10 per level

\page ## Cybernetic Enhancements For each cybernetic enhancement acquired in the syntheric upgrades class you can choose any one enhancement from one of the six categories. ### Brain (50000, 25000) **FTL Pilot:** You can replace the left half of your frontal lobe with a synthetic upgrade which will give you the power to perform complex calculations beyond your factory-level reasoning including navigating non-Euclidean space. You also gain the Keen Mind Feat if you did not have it already. ### Eyes (10000, 5000) **Infravision:** You can replace your eyes with prosthetics that include built in mechanical sensors adding a third setting for your vision that you can freely switch to: While in dim light or darkness, characters with infravision can perceive heat signatures up to 30 ft away through up to 5 ft of non-metallic, solid material. ### Face (10000, 5000) **Perfect Disguise:** You can replace your face with a synthetic alternative that allows you to instantly assume any face. ### Body (30000, 20000) **Invisibility 1:** Prerequisite for Invisibility 2. You can upgrade all of your skin with a light disbersing, synthetic alternative that will allow you to become partially invisible giving you advantage on steath checks. Powered by an embedded energy core, this ability can be used for one hour per day.

**Invisibility 2:** You can upgrade your synthetic skin to achieve true invisibility. This ability can be used for one hour per day.
Note: this effect does not extend to any clothes or tools that are not embedded in your body.

**Reinforced Body:** You can replace the stock synthetic bones in your body with synthetically braced alternatives, especially along your spine and legs to acquire proficiency with power armor. Once this upgrade and both arm upgrades are acquired you can wield ultra heavy class weapons. ### Arms (10000, 5000) **Powered Arm:** Replace the factory muscles in one arm with upgraded replacements to increase your strength by 1 to a maximum of 20. Once both arms are replaced and the Reinforced Body upgrade is acquired you can wield ultra-heavy class weapons.

**Wrist-mounted laser pistols:** You can replace your factory wrists with upgraded replacements that will function as a wrist-mounted pistol powered by an energy core that deal radiant damage. These weapons are concealed when not in use.

#### Legs (20000, 10000) **Powered Legs:** You can replace the factory muscles in one of your legs with upgraded replacements to increase your movement speed by 5.

### Palms/Soles (500000, 250000) **Propolsion Soles/Palms:** You can replace the factory soles of your feet and the palms of your hands with upgraded replacements including miniature AG units contained in programmable matter that allows you to take your movement speed in any direction in 3D space.

For the duration, the weapon has a +1 bonus to attack rolls and deals an extra 1d4 damage of the chosen type when it hits.When you cast this spell using an infusion slot of 5th or 6th level, the bonus to attack rolls increases to +2 and the extra damage increases to 2d4. After a venulose and a verse of violence our vigilant victors had vouchsafed their vavasours by vaporizing those villainous violators of value and virtue! Verily, the virtuous were vivified, the victors venerated, and the visage of villainy never again intervened with the inviolable vox populi.

## Biology Aside from being villainous violators of value and virtue unloved by the UFP especially and
humans in general, the Vuhn are
members of a particularly
homogeneous alien race
that developed from a
distinct and truly alien
evolutionary tree. The
Vuhn are tripedal
(they have three
legs, two forelegs
and one
hindleg) with
three digits
on each
extremity and
come from an
ecology where
this anatomy is
commonplace. They have
two primary, fully functional
arms on either side of their
bodies and one vestigial arm
on their chest originally
evolved to create a
wardrum-like boom as
the Vuhn warriors
galloped across the
plains of Khalimar,
their homeworld.
The Vuhn are coated in a
hard keratinous shell
that has become so powerful over the
generations that experts hypothesize
that the Vhun specifically developed
plasma weapons as a means of
penetrating their own natural armor.
This armor develops after the Vuhn
turns ~70 GSY old, exiting their brood years. The Vuhn are hemaphrodites: from ~20 to ~70 Vuhn are biologically female, after which their bodies harden and they become biologically male for the remainder of their lifespan which is estimated to be between 400 and 1000 years. ``` ``` During their breeding stage Vuhn also spend ~7 years bringing an individual fetus to term making them significantly less fecund than humanity, but significantly more durable. Aside from their armor, the Vuhn's anatomy has evolved to make them exceptionally hardy. The Vuhn's keratinous shell can be hardened into a kind of space suit and their aquatic
lung provides their body with oxygen for up to an hour conciously. Additionally, Vuhn can willfully enter a hybernative mode in which they will not need to eat, drink, or breath for an indeterminate length of time. It has been reported that a hundred year old Vuhn body in hybernation was recovered from a stranded dreadnought and that, upon rehydrating, the Vuhn warrior was revived fully functional and with all his faculties! The Vuhn are terrestrial, however, compared to the human's galactic goldilocks zonen (GGZ) -the area in The Spiral that has existed for the right period of time to foster human inhabitable planets- the Vuhn prosper in the older and colder parts of the galaxy. The Vuhn evolved from anaerobic microorganisms so the oxygen rich atmospheres of Terran-like planets are poisonous to the Vuhn who prefer an atmospheric mix of sulpher, nitrogen, and carbon gasses. ## Culture To be Vuhn is to be a warrior. The Vuhn's ecology is a brutal place where the endless war of microbes has become the blueprint for existance all the way up to the macrobiome. For generations, this war was fought enlessly between the Vuhn and the rest of the inhabitants of Khalimar until the Vuhn came to dominate not only their home planet, but hundreds of surrounding star systems. The Vuhn are highly homogeneous, all Vuhn are members of the one faith, worshiping a holy lifegiver to all Vuhnkind, and one Vuhn Empire. However, this uniform religion/state is non-prescriptive: it is generally up to each individual Vuhn or at least each tribe to determine what it means to serve their their goddess and their nation. Despite their homogeneity, or perhaps because of it, the Vuhn are nearly always at war with one another. The Vuhn are organized into tribes based in their leviathan class dreadnoughts capable of supporting thousands of Vuhn warriors and livestock indefinitely allowing the tribe reaves and rape its way across The Spiral. The Vuhn do not have FTL, so they can easily become temporily displaced from other Vuhn while travelling in their dreadnought. As a result, the passengers generally act as a politically independent tribal unit since adhering to a centralized state would be impractical. This in turn drives the wars between tribal units as separate tribes make conflicting claims to territory across Vuhn Space.

PART 4.3 | THE VUHN

\page ## Vuhn Traits All Vuhn are considered members of the Vuhn Empire and members of Church of the Lifegiver by being born Vuhn. However, there is little to no universal dogma associated with either the Vuhn religion or nation and the individual Vuhn or groups of Vuhn determine how best to serve both independently. Vuhn warriors, upon coming of age, usually enlist in a Vuhn dreadnought. As a crewmember, they join the strict hierarchy of a politically distinct unit under the starship captain. They then spend their long lifetime ravaging star systems to support the other residents of the dreadnoughts and the Vuhn inhabited worlds in exchange for access to the local breeding stage Vuhn. Vuhn generally spend their breeding stage on planets surviving on similar arrangements until they come of age to enlist on a dreadnought themselves. It is highly irregular but possible for a breeding stage Vuhn to live on a dreadnought, depending on the specific tribe these Vuhn can be treated anywhere on the the social spectrum from slaves or members of high society. Upon maturing into their male form, the Vhun's carapace hardens into virtually impenetrable armor, at least in terms of standard ballistics. All mature Vhun are warriors and membership in the species is dependent upon their conformance to this role by enlisting with a dreadnought as soon as they come of age. ### Ability Score Increase Vuhn gain a bonus of 1 to their Con ability score and 1 to their Str ability score. ### Unique Nature All Vuhn have darkvision.
Additionally, as a Vuhn, you can choose to use your natural claws or body to deal slashing/bludgeoning damage in combat rather than relying on a weapon to defeat your foes.

Vhun also have the innate ability to regrow lost limbs during a long rest through an accelerated healing process evolved through generations of experience in the harsh conditions on Khalimar. ### Age Vuhn are adolescents from ages 0 to ~20, females from ~20 to ~70 and male from ~70 onward. Vuhn can sometimes live to be over 1000 years old, but the vast majority of Vuhn die in combat prior to expiring due to natural causes. ### Sex and Gender Vuhn are hemaphrodites: biologically female during their breeding stage and male beyond.

### Size and Speed Vuhn are medium sized creatures covered in a thick exoskeleton with saddle shaped faces. Adult Vuhn are approximately 8 ft tall and weigh ~500 lbs. Vuhn base walking speed is 30 ft. ### Languages Vuhn speak the Vuhnnic tongue generally comprehensible by all Vuhn but often still varying significantly between tribes. ### Classes The Vhun belong to one of three classes: Brute, Warrior, or Covert Ops. The Brutes are the hammer. They serve as the vanguard of a Vhun war party. By recklessly attacking their foes with no consideration for their own well being they cleave through the toughest of opponents as the merciless spearhead of the Vhun attack. The Warriors are the shield. Serving on the front line, Warriors serve as the backbone of the Vhun offensive. Going blow for blow with the body of the opposing army, Vhun Warriors can repel and counterattack against even the most powerful offensive force holding the line long enough for the Brutes to annihilate the opponents weak points. The Covert Ops are the scalpel. A covert operative can be infiltrate deep in enemy territory alone or as part of a small team to eliminate specific strategic targets.

- An explorer’s pack and four javelins ### Frenzy Although embracing your feral nature as a Vhun Brute has its advantages, it also comes with a certain set of risks. E.g. when a Vhun that has a limb severed during combat (see Vorpal Dice) must make a DC 10 Wisdom saving throw or become frenzied. A frenzied Vhun will forget their weapons and attack the nearest target with their claws (friend or foe) relentlessly for 1d4 turns. A prone creature will generally not be recognized as a target by the frenzied Vhun so they will not generally attack an unconscious opponent and will instead move on to attack the nearest able target until their frenzy ends. ### Rage In battle, you fight with primal ferocity. On your turn, you can enter a rage as a bonus action. While raging, you gain the following benefits if you aren’t wearing heavy armor: You have advantage on Strength checks and Strength saving throws. When you make a melee weapon attack using Strength, you gain a bonus to the damage roll that increases as you gain levels as a brute, as shown in the Rage Damage column of the Brute Table. You have resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage. If you are able to cast spells, you can’t cast them or concentrate on them while raging. Your rage lasts for 1 minute. It ends early if you are knocked unconscious or if your turn ends and you haven’t attacked a hostile creature since your last turn or taken damage since then. You can also end your rage on your turn as a bonus action. Once you have raged the number of times shown for your brute level in the Rages column of the Brute Table, you must finish a long rest before you can rage again. ``` ``` ### Unarmored Defense While you are not wearing any armor, your Armor Class equals 12+ your Dexterity modifier + your Constitution modifier. ### Reckless Attack Starting at 2nd level, you can throw aside all concern for defense to attack with fierce desperation. When you make your first attack on your turn, you can decide to attack recklessly. Doing so gives you advantage on melee weapon attack rolls using Strength during this turn, but attack rolls against you have advantage until your next turn. ### Danger Sense At 2nd level, you gain an uncanny sense of when things nearby aren’t as they should be, giving you an edge when you dodge away from danger. You have advantage on Dexterity saving throws against effects that you can see, such as traps and spells. To gain this benefit, you can’t be blinded, deafened, or incapacitated. ### Primal Path At 3rd level, you choose a path that shapes the nature of your rage. Your choice grants you features at 3rd level and again at 6th, 10th, and 14th levels. ### Ability Score Improvement When you reach 4th level, and again at 8th, 12th, 16th, and 19th level, you can increase one ability score of your choice by 2, or you can increase two ability scores of your choice by 1. As normal, you can’t increase an ability score above 20 using this feature. Using the optional feats rule, you can forgo taking this feature to take a feat of your choice instead. ### Extra Attack Beginning at 5th level, you can attack twice, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn. ### Fast Movement Starting at 5th level, your speed increases by 10 feet while you aren’t wearing heavy armor. ### Feral Instinct By 7th level, your instincts are so honed that you have advantage on initiative rolls. Additionally, if you are surprised at the beginning of combat and aren’t incapacitated, you can act normally on your first turn, but only if you enter your rage before doing anything else on that turn.

This increases to two additional dice at 13th level and three additional dice at 17th level. ### Relentless Rage Starting at 11th level, your rage can keep you fighting despite grievous wounds. If you drop to 0 hit points while you’re raging and don’t die outright, you can make a DC 10 Constitution saving throw. If you succeed, you drop to 1 hit point instead. Each time you use this feature after the first, the DC increases by 5. When you finish a short or long rest, the DC resets to 10. ### Brutal Critical At 13th level, you can roll two additional weapon damage dice when determining the extra damage for a critical hit with a melee attack. This increases to three additional dice at 17th level. ### Persistent Rage Beginning at 15th level, your rage is so fierce that it ends early only if you fall unconscious or if you choose to end it. ### Brutal Critical At 17th level, you can roll three additional weapon damage dice when determining the extra damage for a critical hit with a melee attack. ### Indomitable Might Beginning at 18th level, if your total for a Strength check is less than your Strength score, you can use that score in place of the total. ### Primal Champion At 20th level, you embody the power of the wilds. Your Strength and Constitution scores increase by 4. Your maximum for those scores is now 24.

\page ## Primal Paths Rage burns in every brute’s heart, a furnace that drives him or her toward greatness. Different brutes attribute their rage to different sources, however. For some, it is an internal reservoir where pain, grief, and anger are forged into a fury hard as steel. Others see it as a spiritual blessing, a gift of a totem animal. ### Path of the Berserker For some brutes, rage is a means to an end—that end being violence. The Path of the Berserker is a path of untrammeled fury, slick with blood. As you enter the berserker’s rage, you thrill in the chaos of battle, heedless of your own health or well-being. #### Fever Pitch Starting when you choose this path at 3rd level, you can go into a fever pitch when you rage. If you do so, for the duration of your rage you can make a single melee weapon attack as a bonus action on each of your turns after this one. When your rage ends, you suffer one level of exhaustion. #### Mindless Rage Beginning at 6th level, you can’t be charmed or frightened while raging. If you are charmed or frightened when you enter your rage, the effect is suspended for the duration of the rage. #### Intimidating Presence Beginning at 10th level, you can use your action to frighten someone with your menacing presence. When you do so, choose one creature that you can see within 30 feet of you. If the creature can see or hear you, it must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw (DC equal to 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier) or be frightened of you until the end of your next turn. On subsequent turns, you can use your action to extend the duration of this effect on the frightened creature until the end of your next turn. This effect ends if the creature ends its turn out of line of sight or more than 60 feet away from you. If the creature succeeds on its saving throw, you can’t use this feature on that creature again for 24 hours. Retaliation Starting at 14th level, when you take damage from a creature that is within 5 feet of you, you can use your reaction to make a melee weapon attack against that creature.

\page ## Covert Archetypes Covert Operatives have many features in common, including their emphasis on perfecting their skills, their precise and deadly approach to combat, and their increasingly quick reflexes. But different operatives steer those talents in varying directions, embodied by the covert archetypes. Your choice of archetype is a reflection of your focus—not necessarily an indication of your chosen profession, but a description of your preferred techniques. ### Operative #### Fast Hands Starting at 3rd level, you can use the bonus action granted by your Cunning Action to make a Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) check, use your thieves’ tools to disarm a trap or open a lock, or take the Use an Object action. #### Second-Story Work When you choose this archetype at 3rd level, you gain the ability to climb faster than normal; climbing no longer costs you extra movement. In addition, when you make a running jump, the distance you cover increases by a number of feet equal to your Dexterity modifier. #### Supreme Sneak Starting at 9th level, you have advantage on a Dexterity (Stealth) check if you move no more than half your speed on the same turn. #### Perfect Camoflauge By 13th level, you have developed your chameleon skin enough to completely blend into your environment. You can now turn yourself invisible for up to one hour once per long rest. #### Operative’s Reflexes When you reach 17th level, you have become adept at laying ambushes and quickly escaping danger. # Dwellers Dwellers are the oldest and most evolutionarily successful organisms in The Spiral occupying gas giants in nearly every explored solar system and an unknown number of systems beyond human/android occupied space. Contrary to the manner in which the Quick (the Dwellers' term for the relatively short-lived terrestrial civilizations) attempt to conquer space, the Dwellers have conquered time. As a dweller ages they slow down their experience of time allowing them to live for years of GST while only experiencing a few days. Dwellers refer to this process as diving. According to the Dwellers, though still unvalidated by corroborating evidence, the Dweller "civilization" goes back over one billion years and some of the oldest Dwellers claim to be over one million years old. We put civilization in quotation marks because it is difficult to make the case that the Dwellers are a single civilization at all. Each Dweller Planet is an almost completely isolated society with virtually no contact with anyone outside their home planet. As a result, it is difficult to determine whether the Dwellers should be considered one civilization or a series of individual planetary civilizations. However, despite the lack of contact between these civilizations, there is a surprising level of cultural homogeneity between Dweller Planets. For example, the absurd lifespans of these creatures has resulted in a peculiar caste system based on age. Children and adolescents (age 0-100) are treated as slaves and regularly hunted for sport during kin hunting season. Once fully developed a dweller becomes a young adult (age 101-500~) and occupies the lowest strata within the society usually forced to take the least desirable jobs and take out loans against property to slowly acquire kudos until they are accepted by their peers as and adult (age ~500) from there, they continue to acquire kudos until they are recognized as wizened (~5000), a sage (~10000), a grand sage (~100000), and an ancient (~1000000). As a dweller works their way into the higher stratas of society they will acquire roles of greater responsibility within their guilds from leading the planets military forces to archiving and maintaining the histories of dweller kind.

\page ## Dweller Traits Dwellers are gas giant dwellers that live in planetary semi-anarchic societies which based on kudos rather than any traditional economically backed currency. Dwellers are the only known "slow species" which seeks to conquer time rather than space the way the Quick do. ### Ability Score Increase Dwellers gain a bonus of 1 to their Cha ability score and 1 to their Wis ability score. ### Unique Nature All Dwellers have natural darkvision which includes the unique ability to see clearly in a raging storm on a gas giant.
Additionally, as a Dweller, you gain advantage on all contested athletics checks against opponents one size or more smaller than you. Additionally, dwellers are boneless and can squeeze through any entrance one size smaller than them. ### Inscrutable Anatomy Dwellers also have an inscrutable anatomy that even dwellers no longer fully understand which seems to be some kind of hybrid between organics and genetic engineering. This inscrutable anatomy makes dwellers biologically immortal and facilitates extremely rapid tissue regeneration. As a result, dwellers can regenerate any lost limb during a short rest. ### Age Dwellers claim to live to be over 1 million years old and while their bodies do not seem to be bound any expiration date like humans, it is common for a dweller to experience some neural degeneration as their repeatedly reprinted DNA degenerates. The most common symptom of this degeneration is loss of mobility in their digits, but this mobility can be supplemented through prosthetic replacements. ### Sex and Gender Dwellers can be male or female. Their curious anatomy actually allows them to choose their sex and switch between the two at will based on their preference simply by concentrating on their chosen sex for a few months in GST. As a result, both sexes occupy equal roles in Dweller Society, however, females have the distinguishing ability to bear offspring. Individually, dwellers consider child bearing to be a nuisance and do not have any attachment to the children once they are born and generally release them into the world directly after birthing them. However, Dweller Society as a whole considers child bearing to be a public service and rewards those who take on that burden with kudos. There is no child rearing of any kind in Dweller Society, however some Dwellers to take children to use for slave labor which is considered an honor for the members of the least useful caste in Dweller Society. ``` ``` ### Size and Speed Dwellers are large sized, somewhat squid-like creatures that are used to floating around gas giants rather than walking across terrestrial planets. Dwellers are approximately 15 ft tall and weigh ~600 lbs. Dweller base swimming speed is 60 ft, walking 30 ft. ### Languages Dwellers speak Dwellerese, a remarkably homogeneous tongue spoken by all dwellers regardless of home planet that dates back to the beginning of Dweller civilization. ### Appearance Dwellers appear to be made of two discs reflected across their y axis with a number of tentacle-like appendages with some number of digits splayed out from either disc. Depending on the subspecies of dweller, these usually start as 8 limbs and 4 digits on each limb but can vary by planet and age as digits or even whole appendages degrade off of the older dwellers. Dwellers come in as many varieties of color as there are colors in the color spectrum. Generally, dwellers seem to adapt to the colors of their ecosystem over the generations to match the planet they live in so a given Dweller Society will tend to assume a specific color pallet: a muddy colored gas giant like Hecate tends to host brown dwellers, a deep blue planet like Nasqueron tends to have blueish dwellers, etc.

\page # Guerillist A brightly colored tentacled creature composed from two lime-colored interlocking plates and adorned in all manner of vibrant cloth and jewelry bobs along the gas lanes with a crowd of amorous dwellers to attend the opening ceremonies for the impending war between Citys A and C. Negotiations have been bridging the conflict for several months now and this dweller is concerned that, despite all the pomp, there may not be a war at all if things continue the way they're going. In accordance with tradition, both forces have arrayed their fleets in parade formation facing one another for the opening speeches. The opening ceremonies for a war never actually include real combat and do not even preclude a non-violent resolution to the war, but today this colorful dweller chose to level a peculiar device and during a particularly stirring part of the City A fleet commander's speech countless fireworks erupted from an unidentifiable point of origin in the general vicinity of City Cs fleet which the fleet commander mistakenly answered return volley at City A's fleet thus initiating the first ever unplanned war on Nasqueron that anyone could recall. Guerillists abhor stagnation and consider it their calling in life to inject a little life into the world, usually by anonymously exhibiting their unique artistic specialty to maximum effect. This can be anything from covertly sabataging the starship power supplies to influence the outcome of an interstellar conflict to producing spectral birds to fly through a strict avian free zone to entertain children. ### Spellcasting **Cantrips:** You own two cantrip cartridges from the attached Cartidge List. You acquire an additional cantrip at 4th and 10th level. **Cartridge Slots:** The Guerillist Table above shows how many cartridge slots you have of 1st level and higher. To fire one of these cartridges, you must expend a slot of the cartridge's level or higher. All expended cartridges cool down when you finish a long rest. **Designs Known of 1st level and Higher:** You know the designs for four 1st level cartridges of your choice from the attached list. **Focus:** Your focus for cartridges is the aether oscillator, but you may use any musical instrument as your focus for non-cartridge guerrilist abilities. ### Guerillist Inspiration You can inspire others with stirring words or music. You may use a bonus action to grant a Guerrilist Inspiration die to one creature within 60 feet. This die is a d6. At 5th level, it is a d8; at 10th level it is a d10; and at 15th level it is a d12. This die lasts for 10 minutes or until expended. A creature with a Guerillist Inspiration die can expend it to roll the die and add the result to any one ability check, attack roll, or saving throw it makes. A creature may only have one Guerillist Inspiration die at a time. This ability may be used a number of times equal to your Charisma mod (min. 1). You regain expended uses when you finish a long rest.

\page ### Jack of All Trades At 2nd level, you can add half your proficiency bonus, rounded down, to any ability check you make that doesn't already include your proficiency bonus. ### Song of Rest At 2nd level, you can use your music to revitalize wounded allies during a Short Rest. When you or any friendly creatures who can hear your performance regain hit points at the end of a Short Rest, they regain an extra 1d6 hit points. The amount of extra healing increases to 1d8 at 9th level, 1d10 at 13th level, and 1d12 at 17th level. ### Artistic Fields At 3rd level, you delve into the advanced techniques of one of the below guerillist colleges. Your proficiency bonus is doubled for any ability check you make that uses either skill. At 10th level, you gain this benefit with two additional skill proficiencies. ### Ability Score Improvement At 4th level, and again at 8th, 12th, 16th, and 19th level, you can increase one ability score of your choice by 2, or increase two ability scores by 1 each. As usual, you cannot increase an ability score above 20 using this ability. Alternatively, you can choose to gain a single feat of your choice. Choose two spells from any class, including this one. These spells must be of a level you can cast, or a cantrip. The chosen spells count as guerillist spells for you. You learn an additional two spells at 14th level and again at 18th level. ### Superior Inspiration At 20th level, when you roll initiative and have no uses of guerillist inspiration left, you regain one use.

To really create a work of art that will send your audience reeling and leave them questioning everything they took for granted you must approach the project with a thorough understanding of the issues that will rattle them to their very core. ### Bonus Proficiencies When you join the College of the Archivist you get 3 additional proficiencies in any skills of your choice. ### Cutting Words At 3rd level, you gain the ability to use your wit to distract, confuse, and otherwise discourage your opponent. By expending your reaction you can choose a target within 60 ft of you makes an ability check/attack roll/damage roll you can expend one guerillist inspiration die and subtract the roll from their roll. This can be used after the die is rolled, but must be activated before the DM announces that the check succeeded or failed. ### Additional Infusions At 6th leveI, yuu learn two cartridges of your choice from any class. A cartridge yuu choose must be of a level you can cast, as shown on the Guerillist table, or a cantrip. You have to get in your audiences face and really make them see your work. Unfortunately, many peoples natural reaction to really inspired art is to violently defend the status quo. Self-proclaimed authority figures are especially keen on this type of response. Therefore, any student of the College of the Guerilla worth their salt knows their way around a fight. ### Bonus Proficiencies When you join the college of valor you gain proficiencies in medium dweller armor and martial weapons. ### Combat Inspiration At 3rd level, you learn toi nspire others in battle. A creature that has a Guerillist Inspiration die from you can roll that die and add the number rolled to a weapon's damage roll it just made. Alternatively, when an attack roll is made against the crcalure it can use its reaction to roll the Guerillist Inspiration die and add the number rolled to its AC against that attack after seeing the roll but before knowing whether it hits or misses. ### Extra Attack Starting at 6th level, you can attack twice, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn. ### Weapons Expert At 14th level, you have mastered the art of wielding your aether oscillator and other weapon(s) simultaneously. When you use your action to fire a cartridge from your aether oscillator, you can take one weapon attack as a bonus action.

\page # Additional Resources for Dwellers ## Guilds In Dweller Society there is seemingly no executive oversight, nearly every facet of life is regulated to the relevant guild. Guilds are organizations devoted to honing their expertise in their particular fields and, given that many guilds have been practicing their craft for millions of years, Dweller-kind generally feel safe in the assumption that the experts are best suited to take reponsibility for their craft. This philosophy extends from traditionally artisan dominated professions, like tailors, all the way up to the most executively regulated professions in Quick Society like the military. No matter how the politics blow in Dweller Society, no dweller can direcly exercise influence over the guilds outside of their profession. ### Artisan Guilds You are an artisan and excel at practicing and monetizing your craft. Once an affected creature loses the temporary hit points granted by this cartridge, the effect ends for that creature. At Higher Levels: When you activate this cartridge using a cartridge slot of 4th level or higher, the temporary hit points increase by 5 for each slot level above 3rd. #### Dimension Door *4th-level* ___ - **Activation Cost:** 1 action - **Range:** 500 ft - **Components:** Aether Oscillator - **Duration:** Instantaneous You teleport yourself from your current location to any other spot within range. You arrive at exactly the spot desired. It can be a place you can see, one you can visualize, or one you can describe by stating distance and direction, such as “200 feet straight downward” or “upward to the northwest at a 45-degree angle, 300 feet.” You can bring along objects as long as their weight doesn’t exceed what you can carry. You can also bring one willing creature of your size or smaller who is carrying gear up to its carrying capacity. The creature must be within 5 feet of you when you use this cartridge. If you would arrive in a place already occupied by an object or a creature, you and any creature traveling with you each take 4d6 force damage, and the cartridge fails to teleport you. #### Polymorph *4th-level* ___ - **Activation Cost:** 1 action - **Range:** 60 ft - **Components:** Aether Oscillator - **Duration:** Concentration, up to 1 hour This cartridge transforms a creature that you can see within range into a new form. An unwilling creature must make a Wisdom saving throw to avoid the effect. The transformation lasts for the duration, or until the target drops to 0 HP. The new form can be any beast whose challenge rating is equal to or less than the target’s. The target’s game statistics, including mental ability scores, are replaced by the statistics of the chosen beast. It retains its alignment and personality. The target assumes the HP of its new form. When it reverts to its normal form, the creature returns to the number of hit points it had before it transformed. If it reverts as a result of dropping to 0 HP, any excess damage carries over to its normal form. As long as the excess damage doesn’t reduce the creature’s normal form to 0 HP, it isn’t knocked unconscious. The creature is limited in the actions it can perform by the nature of its new form. The target’s gear melds into the new form.
