Clockwork Carriage pg 8 credit Public domain 1910 Villemard. ### Version 2.0 This is an update to *Jean Ralphio's Clockwork Corps, Simple Simon & the Aerochariot: A Guild of the Smouldering Bowl Mercenary Encounter.* It includes JR's clockworks shop, offering another hook to meet the goblin as a salesman in a non-combat scenario. ### Setting The Clockwork Corps operates out of Waterdeep in Faerun, but could be found just about anywhere across the planes. ## Possible adventure hooks ### *The Tiara of Divine Protection* - The party is approched by a human merchant named Varn Anteos and offered a job hunting a red dragon that attacked his caravan and stole a chest of 5000gp and, more importantly, the priceless and holy *Tiara of Divine Protection*- an antiquity he purchased from a dealer in Calimport. The dragon was last seen headed north toward the Sword Mountains. The kicker- a rival merchant has heard of his misfortunes and hired the Clockwork Corps to find the dragon's lair and return with the stolen treasure. Anteos says you can beat the mercenaries to the prize, convience them to join you, or take the goods from them if they found it and wont cooperate, it doesnt matter- he just wants his fortune back and will pay 10,000 gp plus expenses to make that happen. While he does hail from a rich Waterdeep family, Varn Anteos is actually a **spy** and loyal Zhentarim agent and the information that he has given is faulty. The Zhentarim stole the *Tiara of Divine Protection* from the Temple of the Moon almost 120 years ago. It was being transported to Waterdeep to be auctioned off at a clandestine, invite only event with a number of other high-profile stolen relics and art pieces. The rival merchant Anteos spoke of is in reality the Harpers, working in conjunction with the House of the Moon itself, Selûne's clergy and their Harper allies hiring the eccentric mercenary crew as a deniable asset to secure and recover the church's lost holy relic. ``` ``` ### Traveling Salesman Jean Ralphio has always been a showman in the sales role. He enjoys nothing more than equipping another mercenary crew, slave rebellion or army with his weapons and gear- traveling far and wide to do so. Your characters might meet Jean in a non-combat scenario at a well known tavern, on the road, or selling his wares at the local market. Jean Ralphio's catalog is displayed pg 3-7. ### A Price on Your Heads! Your adventuring party has been gathering quite a reputation- and more than a few enemies. Someone powerful in Waterdeep has hired the Clockwork Corps to assassinate one or more of the player characters. Perhaps it was a disgruntled noble family like the Cassalanters, perhaps the Xanathar- what matters now is the Clockwork Corps is gunning for you, and they always get their man. This hook is simple: the mercenary band ambushes the player characters, targeting one or more of them for assassination or kidnapping. Let the bullets fly. ### Lend a Hand: Desperate Repairs To introduce the Clockwork Corps as potential allies, the party encounters Simon and the goblins repairing the crashed or battle damaged aerochariot, maybe deep in the jungle or among the sandy dunes of a desert. If the party doesn't attack the mercenary crew on sight, Simple Simon may enlist the adventurers to help him repair his airship. Characters with *Tinker Tools* and *smiths' tools* or the *mending* cantrip can help with the repairs, while the rest of the party helps fend off an assault by creatures appropriate to the terrain- yeti in the snowy mountains, a zombie t-rex in Chult, or maybe a unit of Flaming Fist soldiers along the Sword Coast (as Simple Simon is wanted in Baldur's Gate).

##### Tiara of Divine Protection *Wondrous item (legendary); (Requries Attunement)*. - This *Holy Symbol* of Selûne is constructed of silver, moonstone, pearl and sapphire and is worth 50,000 gold pieces. While wearing the Tiara, your eyes glow milky white and you gain the following benefits: - +2 to AC and +2 to Saving Throws. - **Eyes of the Moonmaiden**: gain *Truesight* out to 120 feet. - **Selûne's Protection:** *Shapechangers, aberrations, elementals, fey, fiends,* and *undead* creatures have disadvantage on attack rolls against you. You can’t be charmed, frightened, or possessed by these creatures. - **Crown of Moonlit Radiance (1/Day):** Once per day, the wearer can utter a prayer to Selûne, causing the Tiara to glow with divine moonlight. Treat the Tiara as the source of a *Daylight* spell. A *Lycanthrope* touched by this divine moonlight must take a DC 20 Constitution saving throw, instantly reverting to its original form on a failed save. A werecreature can't assume a different form until it leaves the light.

Public Domain Source: Bernard Spragg (2014) #### The Aerochariot A trophy taken on a unsanctioned heist, the Sparrow M-1 is a class of gnomish-designed airship called an aerochariot, propelled by an air elemental bound to its engine and supported by the dynamic reaction of the air against its wings. This model features two main wings stacked one above the other, with the pilot's cockpit seated behind the elemental engine and between the wings. The pilot's *.30-06 Clockwork Rotary Cannon* is mounted on the ship's nose, fired with a button on the ship's control yoke. A gunner's cockpit sits two feet from the pilot's seat towards the airship's tail, fitted with a swivel mount for installing weaponry. When used for trophy hunting dragons, the gunner's Rotary Cannon is usually replaced with an appropriate Dracotongue, though Simon leans towards the Fat Lady, a sonic cannon made from the harvested draconis fundamentum, throat and lungs of a talented opera singing dragon from Ravnica. When used as low flying air support in pitched battles, a Dracotongue is often attached sidesaddle and used to freeze enemy archers atop walls and burn soldiers out of their trenches. The ship can carry 240 pounds of cargo, and sometimes kegs of gunpowder or baskets of fuse-linked bombs are positioned around the cockpits to be dropped on the enemy. This Sparrow M-1 is one of fifty created by a highly militant faction of a gnomes. After stealing it from the gnomish airfield (and killing a number of them in the process), Simon has been using it in conjunction with Jean Ralphio's Commandos, selling their services to the highest bidder. Using their *comet packs* to offset weight constrictions on the vehicle, up to six goblins can buckle themselves to either bottom wing- unstrapping themselves midflight and dropping into the battle from above. ___ > ### Alternate Actions (Pilot Only) > **Smoke Curtain** Instead of firing his weapon, the pilot flips a switch in the cockpit activating a rig of ten *eversmoking bottles* built into the wings. The smoke curtain it creates has a 60ft radius and extends the entire length of the aerochariot's movement. The smoke disperses after 10 minutes, or 1 minute of moderate wind (11-20 mph) or 2 rounds strong wind (21+ mph).

\page Simple Simon began life as familiar to a professor from Sigil. During her doctoral archeology studies, she summoned and trained the flying monkey to aid her as a dungeoneering companion, teaching him to use tools and follow her commands to disarm traps. She dressed him in leather armor and he carried a rucksack, thieves' tools and a 3 ft wooden pole which he used to tap-tap-tap possible traps. During this period of his life, the familiar was not much more than a simple monkey and is barely recognizeable to the smack-talking troubleshooter you'd meet today. The Hagbaby Derilia *awakened* Simon shortly after her birth. Newly intelligent, the flying monkey apprenticed himself to the Professor's gunslinging tutelage. Now a consumate rogue and gunfighter in his own right, he is regularly found by his master's side on adventures but also takes odd jobs as a successful mercenary- often seen gambling his earnings away at the *Guild of the Smouldering Bowl Pub & Pipeweed Lounge* in Waterdeep's North Ward. As a familiar, Simon is a celestial, and able to be resummoned if he dies- but death hurts and he tries his best to avoid it.

The **Clockwork Commandos** have trained in the use of clockworks, firearms and explosives in the Rat King's Castle under goblin engineer Jean Ralphio. Jean Ralphio was taken by a half-mad dwarf gunsmith Morurr Gearhammer and raised as a Dwarf child when he was a few months old. He became the dwarf's apprentice, learning to craft his master's weapons, and when the old dwarf passed, the goblin piled the contents of his workshop into a wagon hitched to dwarf's prize pig and set off to find his spread his master's genius. While adventuring with the Guild, he bought the freedom of a group of goblin prisoners and offered them the chance to join him, and thus the Clockwork Corps was born! The rank and file **Clockwork Commandos** names are Krakk, Fraggr, Gunna, Blicky, Banga, Biscuit, Niner, Tre-Five, Two-Pump & Oozi. Biscuit, the medic, carries a *healing kit & 6 greater healing potions*. The corps' two **Clockwork Burnouts**, Ignacio and Burna, each use a *crossbow of fireballs* to provide special weapons support to the Commandos. Ignacio and Burna each carry two spare *wand of fireballs*, but arent much for actual spellcasting. Rather they are specifically trained in the technoarcana of their own weapons, adept at swapping out a burnt out wand on the battlefield without frying themselves in the process. Both specialists also carry two *Hushpuppy Proximity Mines,* a *dizzy grenade* and a *+1 Turtle Dragon Scale Shield*. The goblins keep their lycanthropy a secret to maintian their reputation of being nigh unscathable warriors. Worshippers of Selûne, patron of good and neutral lycanthropes, each member of the corps wears her silver *holy symbol* on a chain around their neck.

This heavy firearm is fed ammunition from a drum magazine affixed atop the weapon. Usually found mounted on vehicles or being operated by a prone or crouched user, strength 17 is required to carry and fire this weapon without using its bipod. Weight: 28 pounds. **Properties** Ammunition (firearms), (range 120/600ft.), Two Handed, Burst Fire, Misfire (1), Reload (100).

##### Hushpuppy Proximity Mine A Hushpuppy Proximity Mine is an drum-shaped, alchemical, non-magical device. As an action, a character can arm and throw it at a point up to 60 ft away (or propel the mine up to 120 ft away with a grenade launcher). When a creature moves within 5ft of an armed Hushpuppy Proximity Mine, the device is activated with an thunderous "BOOM" that can be heard up to 300ft away. All creatures within 5ft must succeed on a DC15 Constitution saving throw or take (2d8) thunder damage and be pushed 10ft directly away from the mine and be knocked prone. On a successful save, a creature takes half as much damage and isnt pushed. In addition, unsecured objects that are completely within the area of effect are automatically pushed 10 feet away from the Hushpuppy.

##### Dizzy Grenades Type: advevnturing gear, uncommon Range: Thrown 60ft, Grenade Launcher 120ft. ##### Comet Pack *Wondrous item (backpack), very rare.* This small metal device is worn as a backpack, granting the user a flight speed of 50ft. The device is activated as a *bonus action* by pressing a button on a clockwork arm that extends to the wearer's front at hip level. It has an Armor Class of 20, 10 Hit Points, and is immune to Fire, Poison and Necrotic damage. Weight: 6 pounds. **Flight Stabilizer** A Comet Pack equipped creature's descent is slowed to 10 feet per second when falling. When the creature lands it takes no falling damage and can land on its feet. **Overheat** Should the device's button be held for more than 30 seconds consecutively it will overheat, taking 5 damage as a failswitch stalls the engine to stop it from exploding. It cannot be activated again for 6 seconds while it recharges- the devices *stabilzer* ceases to function, and the creature wearing the device takes 1d4 fire damage as it vents heat. Creatures with *damage resistance (fire)* ignore this damage. **Volatile Fuel Source.** If the device is destroyed, an angry **Fire Elemental** is released from its power core in the square the device occupies and attempts to kill any creature it can find.

##### +1 Turtle Dragon Scale Shield *Magic Armor (Shield), rare* - This shield grants +1 AC and resistance to fire damage. - You have advantage on Saving Throws against the Frightful Presence and Breath Weapons of Dragons.

##### Crossbow of Fireballs *Magical Ranged Weapon (light crossbow), very rare.* This crossbow has a wand of fireballs wired into its flight groove. Instead of firing a bolt, pulling the crossbow's trigger activates the wand. The item has 7 charges. While holding the crossbow, you can use an action to expend 1 of its charges to cast the fireball spell (save DC 15) from it. The crossbow regains 1d6 + 1 expended charges daily at dawn. If you expend the wand's last charge, roll a d20. On a 1, the wand crumbles into ashes and is destroyed, rendering the crossbow useless. A new *wand of fireballs* may be loaded into the Crossbow of Fireballs as an action with a successful DC 13 Intelligence (Arcana) check and *Tinker Tools*, allowing the weapon to be fired again.

### Weapons Preview: Dracotongues Living weapons made of harvested Draconis Fundamentum and other organs, each *Dracotongue* is powered by a miniaturized beating dragon heart which floats in a magical liquid solution in a glass tank. These weapons replicate a dragon’s breath weapon. If the dragon’s name was known, it is stamped on the side of the weapon’s stock. Unique constructs, each Dracotongue design differs slightly.

##### Dracotongue Flamethrower (“Ash") *Living Weapon (Dracotongue), very rare (requires attunement)* **Flamethrower (Recharge 5-6)** As an action, the Dracotongue exhales fire in a 30-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 17 Dexterity saving throw, taking 28 (8d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. **Airship Mounted Model** designed to safetly be mounted on the Sparrow M-1 aerochariot without risk of explosion, the **"Ash"** is fitted with a coolant system made from miniaturized white dragon lungs, and ignores the Dracotongue *Highly Volatile* property at the cost of potential firepower.

They have scottish accents and a fondness for ale, and sharing ale, and spilling ale. - Jean Ralphio wears a ten gallon hat, spurred leather boots, and a fringed poncho over his armor. Raised as a Dwarf, he strives to conduct his business in dwarvish to show off his adopted heritage. The corps runs drills in dwarvish and it is the standard for their battlefield communications. Jean Ralphio enthusiastically hails dwarven players in their language and gives them a sales pitch for a *Clockwork Kneecapper*. "Family Discount- 10% off for dad's cousins!" Hes been noted as "quite polite" for a goblin, and only speaks goblin when swearing or surprised. While commander of the corps, Jean Ralphio is still the smallest of the goblins and they take his small size and his shock of thick black hair as weaknesses. Theyre all at least three inches taller than him and (with the exception of the girls Burna, Biscuit and Oozi, who have beeswaxed mohawks) are all beautifully bald. But at the end of the day, their employer is the best shot they've ever seen and makes them more gold than they know what do to with so they more or less respect him, with a fair amount of teasing sprinkled on to ease their tensions. - Simple Simon has a thick cockney accent. While speaking, his hands are very animated. He is addicted to tobacco, a cigarillo usually nonchalantly hanging from is mouth or held in hand to dramatize his gestures. He is sarcastic and quippy, yet good natured. The small celestial has died 13 times, and it's never been a pleasant experience. He wont easily risk his safety or that of his prize airship, preferring retreat and regroup over attempts at vain glory. Simon is second in command of the Corps and their officer in the field.
