# Project 5.5 ___ **Version 4**

## Preface The D&D Project 5.5 is a large collection of variant rules for 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons, meant to act as a “vanilla plus” modification of the original system and as a compendium of the majority of material released for the original system over the past few years. It includes numerous fundamental changes to the original rules, and is partially backwards compatible with the original system and subclasses. ___ I do not claim to own ideas and rules presented in the original 5th edition material, nor do I claim any of the art presented. This is unofficial fan content permitted under the Fan Content Policy. All credit goes to Wizards of the Coast and artists’ whose works are used, the latter of whom are credited directly on pages where their art appears or at the end of the document where their work appears. #### Playtest Material These variant rules are to be considered major modifications in playtest. They are not official in any capacity, nor are they necessarily complete or balanced. As new updates and fixes are made, they will be added to this doc and its subsidiaries. #### Backwards Compatibility? Many of the rules here, especially classes, were changed to fit the balancing of Project 5.5 (similar to the 2014 5e Player's Handbook), and are not backwards compatible with the original system as they are currently written. ___ The races and subraces, renamed here to Ancestries and Heritages, are mostly compatible with the original system, but may interfere with balancing. ___ When using this system, especially with p5.5 classes, it is recommended to use all applicable p5.5 rules instead of the original content for a given item, if available. For example, if you were to play with the p5.5 rules for the Fighter class, a subclass from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything may not be easily translatable to the new progression system. #### Can't Find a Rule? If a rule from the original 5th Edition D&D is not present here, then it is either unfinished or it is material with too few or no changes that warrant a revision. Until a revised version of a rule is made, the original 5e version is recommended. ``` ``` #### Flavor is Free One of the core philosophies we designed Project 5.5 around was that flavor is free. The rules and ideas written across these documents are suggestions for you to take into your games and modify however you like! Your Tieflings might hold rulership of a national superpower; Mystics in your worlds might be viewed as outsiders for their strange talents, your spells might not work just right. When an update releases, some links may not show the updated page upon opening them if you had previously opened that link. To fix this, simply reload the page. If that doesn't work, then there is either a delay before the link fully updates, or I improperly updated the link. #### A Note About Mobile Because Project 5.5 is so large, formatting between mobile devices and computers diverges quickly. ## Creating a Project 5.5 Character In Project 5.5, creating your character's statistics has been split into a three-step process, split across three core Player's Handbooks. _ _ _ Before you open any of the player's handbooks, you might consider the kind of character you'd like to play, and what arrangement or method of deciding your ability scores might benefit that concept. Pretty much anything can be made in p5.5! _ _ _ Ability Scores, much like rules as written Dungeons and Dragons, can be decided in many ways. Project 5.5 is balanced around playing with Standard Array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) or point buy, but other methods fit other styles of play! ## Using the Player's Handbooks In the Player's Handbook 1 you will find a great catalogue of character ancestries available to you, sorted into several categories, which are explained on page 3. You can also find a dropdown menu for every ancestry in p5.5 there! Choosing your ancestry is the first broad step in creating a character for Project 5.5. _ _ _ The Player's Handbook 2 contains the core class options for Project 5.5, as well as their various subclasses and tertiary abilities. All of these things fall under the second step of choosing your class. You can find details on this document, as well as dropdown menus for its contents, on page 4. _ _ _ Finally, the Player's Handbook 3 is where you will find all of the character customization options, inlcuding everything from your Background to Tools to Spells. This book is the third and final stop to crafting your character's statistics, where you round out their remaining missing pieces. You can find the details and directory for this document on page 4. Your background, for example, will give you a good starting off point towards writing your character's backstory. _ _ _ Of course, you needn't follow this exact order every time you create a character. You might decide that you'd like to play the Oracle class before choosing an ancestry, or perhaps that you'd like to built a character around a greatsword before knowing your class, for example. Whichever method works best for you is the right one.

They are sorted into four categories: Common, Uncommon, Rare, and Prestige, based on narrative rarity and occasionally on mechanical strength. Common will likely be allowed in most games and in most worlds, with those ancestries usually comprising the majority of society. Uncommon ancestries may be harder to find, and Rare ancestries may be much harder to find; you should ask your DM if you can play one of those ancestries. #### Prestige Ancestries Prestige ancestries are ancestry options available to one or multiple ancestries. They are usually gained at later levels, when a character might meet their prerequisites. You must always build your character using a Common, Uncommon, or Rare ancestry before you can apply a Prestige ancestry (For example, you must make your character a Human before they can Prestige into a Dhampir). When you meet the prerequisites for a Prestige Ancestry, you can choose to gain it in place of a Feat. When you gain a Prestige Ancestry, its features modify or add onto your base ancestry's. If a feature is present on both the Prestige Ancestry and your base ancestry, you take the version of the feature in the prestige ancestry unless specified otherwise. ___ Some ancestries can also be played as Prestige Ancestries (such as Shifter, for example), and some have Prestige ancestries for specific ancestries listed on their document (such as Fledgling, for example). The rules for these specialty Prestiges are written in a dedicated note on that ancestry, and are labeled here as "Prestige."

#### Ancestry Traits **Ability Score Improvement.** Ancestries each grant a basic improvement to your ability scores. In most cases, you gain a +2 bonus to one score, and a +1 bonus to another score, with few exceptions (namely Human) . ___ **Age.** Each ancestry has a suggested lifespan that you might incorporate into your character's backstory and characterization. ___ **Alignment.** Each ancestry has a brief description of the general alignment of a typical member of that ancestry in regards to cosmic forces of good, evil, law, chaos, and neutrality. Certain spells, creatures, and magical effects might funciton differently depending on a given creature's Alignment, but your Alignment is mainly used when determining your character's religion, afterlife, and how they interact with creatures of different alignments.. ___ **Creature Type(s)** Each ancestry (and some Heritages; see below) are associated with a certain creature type or types, such as humanoids or fey, that determines the effectiveness of certain effects (such as spells). ___ **Size.** Each ancestry lists the general height of a typical member of that ancestry, as well as its size category or categories. ___ **Speed.** Your ancestry determines your base walking speed, as well as any other speeds you might have. ___ **Special Features.** Your ancestry, as well as your *Heritage* (see right), grants you special features unique to your ancestry (or unique amongst a group of ancestries, such as with *Darkvision*). ___ **Heritages.** Certain ancestries have Heritages- more precise subgroups within the broader ancestry. Members of a heritage have the traits of the parent ancestry in addition to the traits specific to their heritage. Heritages might categorize broad groups of similar folk under a common ancestry, or perhaps group the more minor variations of a single defined ancestry as heritages. Halflings, for instance, vary only slightly in their heritages compared to Saurians, whose heritages are nearly entirely different from each other.

They are sorted into two categories: Common and Uncommon. Common classes will likely be allowed in most games and in most worlds, with those classes likely being somewhere within most societies. Uncommon classes may be harder to find; you should ask your DM if you can play one of those classes.

#### Class Traits **Hit Dice.** Your class determines what hit dice you gain. You use them primarily when you take a short rest. ___ **Hit Points.** Your class determines your starting hit points and the amount of hit points you gain each level. ___ **Starting Proficiencies.** In addition to those gained from your Ancestry, Background, and other sources, your class grants you proficiency in certain saving throws, skills, armor, weapons, and tools. ___ **Equipment.** Your class grants you specific starting equipment typical of members of your class. ___ **Class Features.** Your class grants you certain core class features that determines how your class plays, such as a Barbarian's rage or a Wizard's spellcasting. ___ **Subclass.** Each class offers a number of subclasses, class options that change how the class plays in varying amounts. Each class's subclasses has a different name based on their theme- a Barbarian has Paths, Bards have Colleges, Clerics have Domains, and so on. #### Multiclassing? Multiclassing isn't a core feature in Project 5.5. The system is designed and heavily balanced around monoclass play. However, there are many more classes and subclasses to fill the gaps! ___ You can certainly choose to allow multiclassing with Project 5.5 classes, but it is advised to play monoclass.

## Player's Handbook ##### Ancestries - **General** - Ancestries and Heritages replaced the terms Race and Subrace. - Flavor explaining the ages and sizes were readded to all ancestries. - The Alignment feature was readded to all ancestries. - All ancestries apart from Human have a standardized Ability Score Improvement feature (2 to one, 1 to another). - Readded Creature Type to all heritages. - Some heritages received a secondary creature type, such as Elf, which counts as both Humanoid and Fey. - Broadly, the Sunlight Sensitivity feature was changed to simply be a -1 instead of disadvantage. - **Aasimar** - The Light Bearer feature was removed. - The original heritages were readded, as well as the Hollow heritage. - The Celestial Resistance feature was split across the different heritages. - **Dragonborn** - Base rules reverted to Player's Handbook standard. - Added a Damage Resistance feature based on Draconic Ancestry. - Breath Weapon can be used a number of times per day equal to Prof. Bonus. - Added heritages: Elemental Scales, Armored Hide, and Feathered Drake. - You can now have a purple dragon as an ancestor. - **Dhampir** - Dhampir Hungers was renamed to Dhampir Cravings, which was then integrated into the ancestry's features. - Removed Ancestral Legacy. - Changed to a Prestige Ancestry. - **Dwarf** - Removed Stonecunning. - Names were changed to separate Dwarves from Faerun. - **Eladrin** - The different seasons for Eladrin were split up into heritages. - Each season gains its own separate skill proficiency, instead of Eladrin all having proficiency in Perception. - **Elf** - Added heritages: Arctic, Cosmic, Desert, and Sea. - Drow were partially renamed to Cavern Elves, with Drow being their nickname. - The lore for Drow and High Elves was changed to reflect the biome themeing of Elves in 5.5. - Features of Triton and Sea Elf were combined into the new Sea Elf. - **Firbolg** - Hidden Step and Firbolg Magic were replaced with Fade Away, an ability that turns you invisibile. - **Genasi** - Absorb Elements was changed from a spell to the Genasi's base ancestry feature. - Heritage features for Genasi were simplified. - **Gith** - All Gith now have advantage on saving throws against mental effects. - Gith can now cast the *Jump* spell at 3rd level instead of the *Shield* spell. - Removed Decadent Mastery and Psionic Resilience from Githyanki. - Githzerai now have an innate psionic attack. - **Gnome** - Lore was changed to differentiate Gnomes from Halflings. It now gains a short range Blindsight in addition to Darkvision. To compensate, the damage of its Claws was reduced to 1d4. - The **Ancient Dragon **Prestige Ancestry was buffed.
