# A Day in the Wastelands

##### Synopsis: A Wastelands mad scientist attempts to keep the Enclave from interfering in his greatest experiment.

\page ## Introduction It's assumed the players are just starting out with new characters and are based in an Enclave.

> Several days ago, the Drill Truck went out testing for wells and it hasn't returned. Water is scarce in the Wastelands. The Enclave can't afford to lose it. The truck was traveling west into the wastes, along the makeshift telegraph line that connects the Enclave to Salt Flat City. Someone needs to find it quickly. That someone is you.

The group is given a recently salvaged rusty sedan with no doors. In the trunk there is a survivor's kit with a lighter, electric flashlight, 50 ft of rope, blankets, medpack and rations. Each player starts with their proficiency weapon and has an additional 10 clix they can use to purchase any Common item from the Enclave's market.

Sedan: 6 Hp. Capacity: Driver +4. No Upgrades.

## The Search

>You drive west of the Enclave into the wastelands. There is very little here but desert and rock. Along the cracked and broken highway, there is nothing, but the jury rigged poles of the Salt Flat City telegraph. A Test to Track the missing Drill Truck discovers multiple vehicle tire tracks in the sand that drifts across the road. It is an unusual amount of traffic.

>Suddenly from behind a large dune, race two cycles. They are flying the black skull banners of the Car Tribes, as they roar up behind you. Each cycle is driven by a mutant Ratling, wearing dark goggles. Standing on the back of one cycle is a shirtless sunburnt man waving a chainsaw about as he screams. "I am Carburetor Jack! This is my highway! You will pay the tax!"

Carburetor Jack. Archetype: Crazy. Traits: Tough, Diehard, Survivalist. Hp 8. Heavy Melee Weapon Specialist.

On his turn, Carburetor Jack will try to leap from the back of the cycle onto the top of the sedan while screaming "Pay the Tax!" If he Tests to do so (Crazy Advantage), he will attack by cutting through the roof with the chainsaw. If Jack takes over half damage or anything of value is thrown out of the sedan as toll payment, he will attempt to jump back to his cycle and stop the chase. The player driving can make a Test to throw Jack off the roof. If successful, Jack must Test or fall for 2 points of damage.

Mutant Ratlings. Trait: Dark-fighter. Mutation: Day Blindness. (Disadvantage in the bright sun.) Hp 4. Small Cleavers. Small Amoeba Guns. (If hit, Test Strength each round or Entangled and lose actions. Ammo Rating 2. Invented by Scientist Joe and his initials are engraved on each). Cycles 4 Hp. Evasive. Wheel Blades.

The Ratlings perform all tests/attacks at disadvantage due to the bright sun. Test Educated to know they are normally nocturnal. The first Ratling will use the wheel blades on his cycle to attack the sedan. The second uses an Amoeba Gun to Entangle players. On the third round of the chase, there is a high speed drive Test to avoid old wreckage in the middle of the road. Failure means the sedan or the cycles take 2 damage as they plow through it. Each raider will have 1d6 clix on their person.

\page ## The Blocked Road

>Lying across the road are several telegraph poles. They have been cut through and the telegraph wire is broken. Above vultures circle in the sky. It is obvious that it was done recently. A Tracking Test can find motorcycle tracks by the side of the road. There are 5 vultures in the flock. The poles can be moved by 3 people successfully Testing Strength, using cutting tools, pry bars, towing them with the sedan etc.. Any vehicle that does not have the 4-Wheel Drive trait must roll a drive Test or become stuck, if it drives off road, around the poles. If the group spends any time in the area, they will spot Conrad the Vulture.

>Perched on a rock, is a lone bedraggled vulture with missing feathers. It blinks at you nervously as it picks at an old snakeskin cowboy boot.

Conrad the mutant Vulture. Light Bite, Hp 2, Robotic Eye: Everything he sees is transmitted to Scientist Joe. Iron Feathers: Once per round, a mutant vulture flock can drop sharp Iron Feathers that will rain down over a small area. All creatures in that area must Test Acrobat or take 1 damage. A flock has enough feathers for 2 attacks, if they or Conrad are shot at. Once out of feathers, they will fly away and not return.

If Conrad is examined closely, Perceptive Test to notice the robotic eye. After Carburetor Jack cut down the telegraph poles, Conrad was ordered by Scientist Joe to watch the road and to lure anyone to the lair of the Hypno Toad. Despite being mutated and cybernetically uplifted by Scientist Joe's experiments, Conrad is not particularly loyal. Beast Speaker: Conrad will say he is hungry. If fed, he will croak there is death to the north and fly back to his flock. From now on during the day, as the players travel, there will always be vultures in the sky, watching. If the vultures are watching, so is Scientist Joe. ## The Lair of the Toad The lair of the Hypno Toad is in a small rocky valley, just north of the road. Conrad the Vulture may attempt to lure people to the Hypno Toad by hopping, squawking and fluttering across the ground but he will never linger in the area. It is far too dangerous. It is from here that Conrad stole the cowboy boot and if players show an interest in it, he will drag it back to the Toad.

>In the small rocky valley below is a circle of bones and bodies. Some new. Many old. The remains of humans, animals and mutants. A modified Dune Buggy with a small machine gun mounted on the front is parked in the midst of the corpses. Hiding, buried in the sand up to its eyes, is the Hypno Toad. Ambush Specialist or Perceptive Test to spot the hidden Hypno Toad.

>From beneath the sand, where it has been hiding, wriggles a large fat Toad. Its eyes bulge and pulse with a flickering strobe. Multi color beams of light bathe the valley in a technicolor dream. It is all so pretty.

Hypno Toad 5 hp. Light melee sticky tongue lash. Mutation: Hypnosis (All within Near must Test or fall asleep).

Beast Speaker: The very fat Toad is only concerned with one thing. It wants flies. It will only talk about flies. The Toad is not specifically interested in killing anyone. It only wants to have a lure to attract food. The Toad might be convinced (Charismatic Test) to trade hypnotized players for something that will help it catch flies. If all of the players are hypnotized, they will sleep for 1-3 days, taking 1 damage per day from exposure. Test to take half damage. When players awake, they will find the Toad has left to do Toad things.

\page In the Dune Buggy is a skeleton wearing one snakeskin cowboy boot. The buggy has obviously been highly modified, with many different switches built into the dash. Ambush Specialist or Trapmaster Test to find the bomb wired to the ignition. The bomb will explode for 2 damage if the switches are not in the correct position when the buggy is driven. Test to avoid the blast.

Dune Buggy. 4 Hit Points, Capacity 2, Off-Road Capable, SMG, Ammo Rating 2.

When searching the general area, successful Scavenging Tests find up to 2 items from the Wastes scavenging table and 15 clix.
## The Survivor

>Driving westward, as the sun is setting, the landscape slowly begins to change. You are now passing through the broken remains of what was once was a small town, now claimed by the drifting dunes.
A partially collapsed building by the side of the road shows signs of a recent gun battle. Bullet holes pockmark the walls and have shattered the large pre apocalypse sign on the roof. According to the damaged sign, it once was Mr Lane's House. If the group stops they will see the Drill Truck's Trailer by the side of the building. The damaged Trailer contains a shot up generator, work lights, pipe for the drill, cutting torch, a tool kit and punctured water tanks. Blacksmith or Fixer Test to repair and add one more day of usage to the generator. The Drill Truck itself is gone. (If your group drives by Mr. Lane's House, they will be stopped by the old canyon bridge that has its steel beams melted by mutant worm acid, severing the Enclave's link to Salt Flat City).

``` ``` Inside the building are the bodies of several Ratlings and an interior door that has been barricaded with rubble and scrap metal. Strength Test to remove it. If it takes over 2 Tests, there won't be enough time to set up any new barricade defenses before darkness falls and the Ratlings that are lurking outside attack.

Hiding behind the barricaded door is a wounded Drill Truck operator. Bora the Explorer. Archetype: Survivor. Traits: Lucky, Quartermaster, Fleet of Foot. Hp 1(6). Empty light pipe pistol. Besides providing exposition, Bora is a possible replacement character, if there are player casualties.

>Bora's Story:
"We drilled deep and hit something big and metal that broke the bit. Immediately, almost as if they had been watching, two strange fellows showed up. One was a badly sunburnt shirtless man and the other wore a patched orange suit and called himself Professor Joe. They wanted us to move on, but we weren't having it. That night Ratlings overran us. I've been hiding here, listening to them digging and chittering. They always come at dark. " A Scavenge Test of Mr. Lane's House will possibly find white wooden clubs, multicolored shirts or mismatched shoes. The Car Tribe Ratlings and Carburetor Jack (If he is alive) are gathering to attack at night. Ratlings have the Dark-fighter trait and prefer to fight without light. Players that do not have a light source will be at Disadvantage. The electric flashlight can only illuminate 1 target per round. Player options include making torches, lighting fires or repairing the generator.

\page Ratling numbers will equal party numbers. When appropriate they will use Cover and Suppressing Fire. Carburetor Jack will not. The second round of combat, he will Crazy Test to attempt to drive his cycle through the front door of the building and attack with his chainsaw. Failure will cause him 2 damage when he slams into the wall. Before combat starts they will attempt to negotiate and make threats, since they have been unwilling to venture deep into the pit to fight the Rad Scorpion and get the nuke.

>Carburetor Jack: "Listen up numpties! Jack is back! Scientist Joe wants it, so he's going to get it!"

Ratlings: "Give us what we want hairless. Give usss the bright one. The shiny one down in the pit. Will give you the drill truck, Pink skinss. Dig it up. Bring it south to Junk Town." Insightful Test. They are willing to trade what is in the pit for the drill truck, but after that all bets are off. The Ratlings are armed with light hand xbows and small cleavers. One of them also carries an Amoeba Gun. Ratlings will always run when combat goes poorly. ## The Pit Bora can direct the players to the drill site just west of Mr Lane's House and there is a small path with Rattling footprints leading towards it.

>Near a large group of saguaro cactuses, a 50 ft pit has been dug in the ground. A series of rickety makeshift ladders that have been cobbled together from scrap, lead to the bottom. On the walls of the pit grow bright blue fungi with gently moving tendrils. Beside the lowest ladder is a curved metal wall with a small open door. On the ground, in front of the door, is the body of a Ratling. Dungeoneer Test to identify the fungi as a type that grows underground in radiation and is harmless. Acrobat Test to use the Ratling ladders without falling for 2 damage, if not roped. The door is the rear tail hatch of a buried military plane. If the players wander among the 40 Saguaro Cactuses, one of the cacti will suddenly pull up its roots, walk a few steps then plunk itself down. They will not attack but will attempt to intimidate the players into leaving. If the Cactus are attacked, they will stampede in a random direction. Anyone caught in the stampede will take 2 damage. Test Acrobat for half. Hidden by the cactus is the mouth of the Rad Scorpion tunnel. It leads downward to the hatch near the cockpit area of the plane. Test Survival or Dungeoneer to recognize that it was dug by a creature. The tunnel is large enough to crawl inside.

>Inside the small door is a tubular metal hallway. Scattered everywhere is broken and burnt electronic equipment and debris. There are a total of three open metal doors in the hall. Test Educated to recognize it is a plane. Perceptive Test to find a large 3ft metal egg in the wreckage. Test Strong to lift the nuke. One door leads to the plane cockpit, where the Rad Scorpion has its nest. The other is the exterior door that the scorpion has tunneled to. The last is the rear cargo hatch that is accessible from the pit. Test Sneaky not to alert the scorpion.

>The cockpit is a small room with two pilot chairs facing a broken windshield. Sand has spilled in through the holes in the plexiglass. There is a large pile of shredded paper on the floor. The scorpion is using the paper as a nest. Test Scavenge to find one readable military manual on the Army Base Learning Table and two small boxes of ammo.

Large Rad Scorpion. HP 10. 2 light attacks. Claw and Sting. Traits: Radiation Burst: Twice per day all within Close must Test or take 2 damage and 1 Radiation Point. Sting Poison: Test or have Disadvantage until healed.

Tiny Nuke. 3d6, 4 Radiation points. Save for half. Test Trapmaster to booby trap the nuke, safely disassemble or to detonate it.

## Junk Town To the south can be found Junk Town. Junk Town is an open trading town used by mutants, the car tribes and other assorted wasteland raiders. It's easy to walk in, but sometimes not so easy to walk out.

Scientist Joe's base is an underground military vault. The Ratlings have built their Junk Town on top of it and the vultures nest in their towers of scrap metal and wood. At night, the 5 mutant vultures (If they are still alive) do not fly and won't give advance warning of intruders to Scientist Joe.

> The walls of Junk Town are constructed out of stacked wrecked cars. Ratlings and other raiders scamper along the top, keeping watch. The large gate is covered with spikes and barbed wire. A smoky haze drifts over the Town and vultures perch on the rickety roofs of the buildings. The total number of raider combatants in Junk Town is 2d6+4. During the day most will be sleeping with only 1d6 awake and the gate is closed. At any point of the wall the party approaches, there will be at least 1 patrolling guard. Test Acrobat to climb the wall. There is moderate cover from rocks near the wall. At the base of one wall is the downward sloped vehicle entrance to the underground vault. The large rolling metal door has an ancient electronic security lock. Test Nimble Fingers to open it. Failure causes the lock to beep repeatedly, roll a Perception Test for a guard on the wall to notice. Each hour Test to see if the rolling door opens for 2 cycles going raiding or returning with loot. Ramming the door at high speed with a vehicle for 2 points of damage will burst it open.

>Tents & rickety buildings line the interior walls of Junk Town. In the center is a huge night market. Here assorted desert scum sell the results of their villainy. For sale is scavenged tech, weapons, auto upgrades, even roast Orat on a stick. The gate to Junk Town opens at dusk and closes at dawn. It is massive and can not be forced open or picked. Junk Town is an open air market. Vendors swarm the area, selling everything at double list price and buying salvage for 2d6 clix. Scientist Joe can occasionally be heard making announcements over the scratchy loudspeakers that are wired all over Junk Town.

>A loudspeaker crackles into life: "Goooood Morning Wastelanders! It's Scientist Joe giving you your daily dose of truth! Science Is the beacon that will guide us in these dark days. It will uplift us from our baser forms. No great wisdom can be reached without sacrifice. Men like me who possess hidden wisdom, are freed from common rules just as we are cut off from common pleasures. Ours is a high and lonely destiny." Hidden just under the sand in the center of the market is the huge missile silo door. Test Perception to notice the slight metallic sound when walking on it. There is a small metal inspection hatch in the missile silo door, poking up out of the sand. The hatch is never locked and can frequently be seen being used as a garbage disposal. Any organic waste, bodies or unwanted captives might be stuffed through the hole.

\page If climbing or pushed into the pipe, Test Acrobat to avoid sliding out of the 10ft garbage encrusted chute. Those that fall will land on top of the hungry giant mutant worm that lives in the silo. There is also a damaged circular steel door in the ground of the marketplace. It is alway guarded by 2 Ratlings at night and 1 during the day. The metal is obviously melted and deformed and the door can not be locked. Years ago the vault door was burnt open by baby mutant worm acid and allowed Scientist Joe to enter the military installation. The door opens onto the computer room stairs.

## Garage

>The underground vehicle bay is filled with vehicles being stripped for parts. Oil and grease stain the floor. Auto parts are randomly stacked in piles. Test Scavenge to discover a full 45 gallon drum of gas and parts for a random vehicle upgrade. It is always possible to find 4 working cycles amid the mess. If a player sets the gas drum on fire, it will explode for 2 damage. Also parked here is the missing Drill Truck.

Drill Truck: 8 Hit Points, Driver + 5, Trait : 4-Wheel Drive (Ignore Disadvantage on Driving Tests from Rough Terrain). The Drill Truck has the drill engine, bits, hoses and mud pump in its bed. With enough time and an appropriate Blacksmith or Fixer roll, the Drill can be turned into a truck mounted weapon that attacks as a Wheel Blade.

## Computer Room

>There is a large bank of mismatched monitors, cables and keyboards. Facing the monitors is a beat up couch that is missing most of its springs. Empty food cans are strewn about the floor. One bored Ratling is sitting on the couch, eating and watching the screens. During the day, some monitors cycle between showing different aerial views of what the robotic eyes of the vultures see. Others display security camera footage of a giant mutant worm writhing in the old missile silo. One monitor and keyboard are still connected to the damaged main computer. Code and text scroll rapidly across the cracked and flickering screen. Test Eidetic Memory to make sense of it. For each failure Test Disadvantage to see if a guard wanders by. The computer has 4 working functions left. SYSREP (map of complex and status), LOCKDOWN (closes and locks all lockable doors, including the missile hatch), ALLCLEAR (clears lockdown), LAUNCH (opens missile hatch in market). Opening doors that are LOCKDOWN will require an hour and a cutting torch. If the party opens the missile hatch by using LAUNCH, the giant worm will escape and try to eat as many mutants in the marketplace as possible before Scientist Joe gets it back under control. ## Amoeba Vats

>The walls are lined with tall clear tanks of pulsing goo. A network of pipes leads up to the ceiling. The floor is sticky underfoot. A corroded biohazard sign is on the wall. If there is gunfire near the tanks, roll a Test for any bullets that miss their target. If the amoeba tanks burst, everyone in the area will be Entangled (Test Strength each round or lose actions). Test Perceptive to find a tap on one of the tanks that allows Amoeba Guns to be reloaded to Ammo Rating 2. An obviously broken electro-magnetic sieve is abandoned in the corner. A small label proclaims it to be "Electro-Pan. A Scientist Joe Exclusive!" If repaired by Fixer or Blacksmith, it will give advantage to Scavenging in sandy conditions for a maximum of 5 rolls, before it permanently breaks.

\page ## Laboratory

>The tables in this room are covered with beakers and glassware. Bubbling retorts distill a glowing green liquid into small lead flasks. Small robotic eyes float in glass jars. A microphone hangs from the ceiling. Under the tables are boxes of old luminous watches and smoke detectors. Anything that might be a source of radiation that Scientist Joe can feed to the mutant worm to make it grow. The three lead flasks contain Mutagen. (If drinking Mutagen, Test or gain 1 random mutation. See table.) Scientist Joe will only drink the Mutagen if things are desperate. Taped under the table is a Radio-A-tion Gun (See weapon stats). Scientist Joe has the habit of screaming "Science will mess you up!" when he uses the gun. If players find a Doctor to surgically implant the robotic eyes, they will gain the Perceptive trait, but Scientist Joe will be able to see what they see. The laboratory has three doors. Two exit to the hallways and the other opens halfway up the missile silo, above the worm. All of the doors are lockable by the computer. There is also a microphone hanging from the ceiling in the lab that Scientist Joe uses to make announcements from the Junk Town loudspeakers or to direct the guards. If players use the loudspeakers to try and impersonate Scientist Joe, Test Charismatic.

Scientist Joe. Archetype Tyrant. Traits: Educated, Medicine, Mutation: Bone Spines Hp 6. Orange Radiation Suit with many patches on the arms. (Advantage for any radiation tests). Radio-A-tion Gun: Heavy Weapon, 2 Damage, Test or take 1 point of radiation, Ammo Rating 3. The stock of the gun is autographed by Scientist Joe and is a numbered limited edition).

### Mutagen Mutations 1d6 1. (Defect) Heightened Metabolism. Must eat constantly or be at Disadvantage. 2. (Defect) Glass Bones. Subtract 2 hpt permanently. 3. (Neutral) Rotary Eyes. You are capable of sliding your eyes around your head like a rotary phone. A neat party trick. 4. (Neutral) Small horns grow from your head. Cosmetic rather than practical. 5. (Beneficial) Death Field. Once per day. Spend your hit points to deal an equal amount of damage to everyone Close. 6. (Beneficial) Force shield. Once per day. All missile attacks against you are at Disadvantage for 3 rounds.

There are several possible ways for players to deal with Junk Town. Most will either assault the front gate, sneak in or try to make a trade with the nuke. If players attempt to trade, they will be let through the melted door in the market to the computer room. From there they are shown the Drill Truck in the garage and the Ratlings take the nuke to the laboratory. Scientist Joe will be directing everything over the loudspeakers.

>"Attention wastelanders! As a man of science, I find it necessary to enlighten you. This is a simple process. Even your minds can comprehend the basics of this transaction. Items of value are exchanged between two parties. It is the most primitive form of commerce."
After the trade, the group will be able to view on the security monitors, Scientist Joe opening the silo door in his laboratory and feeding the nuke to the worm.

>On a flickering security monitor you can see the giant mutant worm writhing around in the old missile silo. Above it opens a door in the wall and standing there is Scientist Joe with the nuke.

He screams, "Witness me and my greatest triumph! Behold the power of Science! Science Rules!" Scientist Joe kicks the nuke out the door and the giant worm rears up, catches it in midair and swallows it.

The worm convulses, expands and doubles in size. Its neck begins to bulge and from it a second head grows. It is now a gigantic two headed worm! Scientist Joe is heard on the loudspeakers. "We have achieved critical mass! Launch is a go! Repeat launch is a go!"

A Ratling taps away at a keyboard and there is a sudden grinding noise from above and the whole complex begins to shake.

"Run Pinkskinsss run!" laugh the Ratlings. "Take your garbage truck and go! Your day iss done, now iss the night of the Rat!"
If any party members leave by the computer room stairs, they will see the missile silo door opening in the marketplace and the giant worm crawling out. Test Acrobat to avoid falling building debris for 1 damage.

>The earth shakes and a crack appears in the ground of the marketplace. Giant doors that were concealed beneath the sand are opening. Tents and screaming mutants tumble into the hole as it grows larger. From the open missile silo wriggles a monstrous worm that looms higher than the walls of Junk Town.

Mutant Worm: hpts 9 or 18, if it as eaten the nuke. Weapons: Light Acid Spit, Heavy Bite. Mutations: Corrosive (Spit causes double damage to metal vehicles or armor). Burrowing (Moves underground at normal speed). Treat the mutant worm that has eaten the nuke as two normal worms tied together. Double its actions for 4 actions total.

## Conclusion If the party flees or sneaks away from Junktown there are two suggested endings. If Scientist Joe and the worm are both alive, it will burst from the ground in front of the party's vehicle, with Scientist Joe riding on its back and carrying his Radio-A-tion gun.

>In a shower of dirt, the giant mutant worm burrows out of the ground in front of you. On its back is Scientist Joe. From his saddle he brandishes a spectacularly large ray gun and yells.
'Did you think it would be that easy? That I would allow your feeble enclave to contaminate my scientific utopia? I will deal with you myself!' If the worm loses its rider, Test each round to see if the worm stops attacking and burrows away.

An alternative ending is the party is chased on the road by a BFV loaded with mutants and driven by Carburetor Jack, if he is still alive.

>There is dust on the horizon behind you. Something large is chasing you. From the shimmering heat waves on the highway emerges a modified transport truck. It's trailer is festooned with spikes and skulls and a horde of mutants cling to the giant Harpoon mounted on the roof.

Transport Truck 16 hpts. Upgrades: Prisoner Box, Retrofitted Chassis, Harpoon (Treat as Ballista but it has a rope attached that mutants can slide down to attack the player vehicles. The rope can be cut for 1 damage). Mutants on the truck are equal+2 the player numbers and have light weapons.

### Optional Escape Driving Rules: It takes 5 successful Drive Test dice if players wish to escape pursuers. Dice results are cumulative round to round. Non-driving characters can add a dice to the driver's roll by successfully completing their own narrative appropriate Test. I look for a short cut, shoot out the tires, throw all our cargo on the road etc. A smoke dispenser or oils slick spray upgrade will also affect the Tests. The opponent's Drive Test removes one of the player's successes for each dice that is a 5 or 6. ## The Return If the players are successful in getting the Drill Truck back to the Enclave, there will be congratulations, feasting and medals all round.

>With the drill truck returned, there is unbridled joy in the Enclave. Improvised medals are awarded. Cactus juice is drunk. The roast beast is carved. As the sun sets, it's just the end of another glorious day in the Wastelands.
