# Puppeteer Some artificer's entertain through the use of puppets. Always lurking, never seeking the spotlight themselves, puppeteers control from the shadows. Expert manipulators, they learn to pull people's strings both figuratively and literally. *"I'm the evil mastermind behind the scenes. I'm the wicked puppeteer who pulls the strings and makes you dance." * -Grant Morrison #### Tools of the Trade When you adopt this specialty at 3rd level, you gain proficiency in Performance and with either leatherwoker's tools or woodcarver's tools. If you already have proficiency in leatherworker's tools or woodcarver's tools, you gain proficiency with one other type of artisan's tools of your choice. #### Puppeteer Spells Starting at 3rd level, you always have certain spells prepared after you reach particular levels in this class, as shown in the Puppeteer Spells table. These spells count as artificer spells for you, but they don't count against the number of artificer spells you prepare. ##### Puppetteer Spells | Artificer Level | Spells | |:-:|:-:| | 3rd | *command, unseen servant* | | 5th | *alter self, arcanist's magic aura* | | 9th | *glyph of warding, tiny servant* | | 13th | *hallucinatory terrain, leomund's secret chest* | | 17th | *animate objects, danse macabre* | ``` ``` #### Puppeteer Strings Also at 3rd level, you learn how to create mystical strings that attach to objects that allow you to animate and control them. These strings are invisible threads of magical energy that tether yourself to your marrionettes, they are used to control the actions of your marrionettes; a set of strings comprises of five arcane threads. As an action, choose a small sized object within 30 feet. The object animates and becomes a creature under your control for up to 1 minute. Each object that you animate uses one hand, as if you were holding an object in it. A marionette may be used as your spellcasting focus. In combat, the marrionette shares your initiative count, but it takes its turn immediately after yours. It takes no actions, unless you take a bonus action on your turn to command it to take one of the actions in its stat block or the Dash, Disengage, Help, Hide, or Search action. You may command your marionette if it is within 60 feet of you (if you control two marrionettes, you can use a single action to command both of them at the same time). You can also cause the marionette to use a Reaction, but this requires you to use your own Reaction as well. If you issue no commands, the marionette takes no actions or movement. Furthermore, for the duration, you can cast spells as though you were in the puppet's space, but you must use your own senses. A marionette is a construct and has the statistics according to its size (see below). If the marionette lacks legs or other appendages it can use for locomotion, it instead has a flying speed of 5 feet and can hover. Add your proficiency bonus to your puppet's AC, attack rolls, and damage rolls, as well as to any saving throws and skills it is proficient in. When a marionette is reduced to 0 hit points, it reverts to it's lifeless form and is destroyed. If the effect otherwise ends, the object reverts to its original form.

\page You may use this ability a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus before needing a long rest. At 5th level you may animate 2 small objects or one medium with a single use of this ability. At 9th level, you may animate 2 medium objects or a single large one. #### True Life At 5th level, you are able to build a True Life marrionette. This marrionette can be made to look like any humanoid that you have seen. This marionette does not require you to use your Puppet Strings to contol its actions. You can project your voice through this marrionette. This puppet is so life-like, you can convince another creature that the marrionette is real by making an Intelligence(Performance) check contested by their Intelligence(Investigation) check. This marionette is capable of using any armor or weapons that you are proficient in. You may use an action to have your True Life marionette activate a magic item in addition to its normal actions. You are only able to create and maintain a single True Life marrionette. If you create a True Life marrionette when you already have one, the first one crumbles to dust. #### Marionette Substitute Beginning at 9th level, whenever an attack or other effect would drop you to 0 hit points, you may use your reaction to swap places with one of your marionettes that is within 30 feet. The marionette suffers the effects of the attack or other effect that dropped you to 0 hit points instead of you. If the effect is an area effect and you are still within the area after swapping you still suffer from the effect and drop to 0 hit points. #### Dance My Pretty Starting at 15th level, as an action, you lash out with your Puppeteer Strings and attempt to attach them onto a creature of large size or smaller. Choose a creature within 30 feet and they must make a Charisma saving throw. On a failed save, your strings attach to the creature for 1 minute. So long as your strings are attached, you control the creature as if it were one of your marionettes. It can take only the Actions you choose, and doesn't do anything that you don't allow it to do. You do not control their voice and they can speak normally. As such, you are unable to force a creature to cast any spell that has a verbal component. During this time you can also cause the creature to use a Reaction, but this requires you to use your own Reaction as well. If you currently have a creature under your control from this feature, you may swap with that creature when you use your Marionette Substitute feature. Each time the target takes damage, it may make a new Charisma saving throw against this effect. If the saving throw succeeds, the effect ends.
