# Introduction and Notes ##### Mouseguard is a great game, but I found my players had trouble finding all the useful information, and as a GM I could rarely find what I wanted. So I decided to spend some time making an abridgment of the game rules that might help anyone interested in playing the game in a more streamlined and time efficient way.

##### So here is an abridgment, with some modifications based on what I think they were trying to do with some of the more 'esoteric' descriptions and a few genuine attempts to improve some less enjoyable rules. ##### But remember, none of this is required, use what rules your group thinks is best, and if you miss one or two rules, as long as your group has fun you haven't missed much.

##### Why is Rank so important? Mouseguard advises the group make characters together and has a built in character hierarchy. These Ranks were made to mirror those of early Feudal Knights. **Advice:** Rank is used for tie-breaking, not power; a leader won't last long unless they listen to their followers.

\page ### 14) Natural Traits (pg.307-308) Get +1 to any Trait rating. (Twice for Tenderpaws, Patrol Leaders, or Guard Captains.) ### 15) Name (pg.309) Use pg.309, any name archaic, medieval, or otherwise allowed by GM is fine. ### 16) Fur (pg.310) Fur Colors from most to least common: brown, blonde, gray, black, white, and red. ### 17) Cloak (pg.311) Mentors pick(ed) cloak colors. Tenderpaws haven't earned theirs. ### 18) Weapons and Gear (pg.312) You may only use one weapon at a time, but you may have any items your GM lets you. (Weapon descriptions pg.117-119, useful gear listed under resource tests pg.238, or beneath the relevant skill.) ### 19) Belief (pg.311-312) Their justification, what they believe they are doing in the Guard. ### 20) Instinct (pg.312) Their behavior, what they learned from Missions in the Guard. (A specific reaction to a thing.) ### 21) Goal (pg.312) Their agenda, what they are trying to get from this Mission. ### 22) Starting Rewards (pg.313) Get +1 Fate and +1 Persona point. ### 23) Relationships (pg.310-311) Fill out the names and other information on your Parents, Senior Artisan, Mentor, Friend(s), and Enemy(s). Ask your GM if you have any specific questions. Note any friends or enemies you have said you have during previous steps. ``` ``` ## Chapter Notes & Changes - I kept the first edition skill choices instead of a rank based package. (Those packages are found on pg.300-301 of the 2nd edition book.) - Starting Abilities, Traits, and Skills cannot have a rating less than 1 (or greater than 6). - All +1's may be in the same Trait/Skill or different ones. - Guard Skills are listed on your character sheet's left side. - Trade Skills are ones that imply a job but are not Guard skills. - I changed the Circles penalty against cool, loner, and tough characters; extroverts are now rewarded instead. I also changed the starting Circles value by rank to mirror Resources (Patrol Guards/Leaders 3, Guard Captains 4, if you want to 'undo' it). - The Leader is the highest ranked character or an Oldfur. GM breaks ties. - In 2nd edition, wises aren't skills, and don't have ratings.

\page # Part 2: Character Advancement ### 1) Nature Anytime you use **Nature**, mark the **pass** or **fail**. When both: - **Passes** are at least **equal** to **Max Nature** - **Fails** are at least **equal** to **Max Nature minus one** Then remove the marks; improve your **Max Nature by +1** ### 2) Abilities and Skills Anytime you use an Ability or Skill, mark the pass or fail. When both: - **Passes** are at least **equal** to the **Ability** or **Skill** rating - **Fails** are at least **equal** to the **rating minus one** Then remove the marks; improve your **Ability** or **Skill rating by +1** ### 3) Beginniner's Luck (pg.95) When Learning a new **Skill**, the **Test** is calculated differently: 1) Use **Will** (mental/social) or **Health** (physical) instead of **Nature**. 2) Add the Skill, Wises, Help, and Gear; then take **half** of that number (and round up). 3) Then add trait penalties or spent persona points. 4) Mark the pass or fail. When the **total** passes and fails for that **Ability** or **Skill** are **equal** to your **Max Nature**, remove the marks and advance your rating to **2**. --- If your Skills section is full, replace another Skill (you can't replace a Guard or the 3 Social Skills). ### 4) Wises (pg.303-305) You get a new Wise during each Winter Session. It should **represent** their **experiences** during the last year, campaign, or arc. You are limited to 4 Wises at a time and you may replace an old Wise with a new one if you want. --- Wises have 4 checks before they reward you (pg.270). These are: - A **pass** using the Wise for +1D6 - A **fail** using the Wise for +1D6 - Spending a **Fate** Point to reroll a single failed die - Spending a **Persona** Point to reroll all failed dice If all four are checked, then you may change the Wise, or immediately take a Beginner's Luck or Skill Advancement Test. (The Skill must be relevant to the Wise, and the Fate/Persona Points spent must have been on rolls using the Wise). ``` ``` ### 5) Traits (pg.303-305) You get a new Trait during each Winter Session. This happens in the following order: 1) Every player gets a chance to suggest a new trait for a different player. (Start left of GM or going alphabetically if there's conflict). 2) If everyone is okay with the new trait, the character gets that new trait at rating 1 (otherwise the suggestion is ignored). 3) This continues until everyone has made a suggestion. If a player already has 5 Traits, they replace an old Trait with the new one. 4) Then every player gets a chance to suggest a trait that should be improved. This continues just as steps 1-3, only the Traits are increased by +1 (to a Maximum 3). --- You do not have to take a Trait simply because everyone else wants you to. Every player should get an **opportunity** for a new Trait or improve an old one with this system, or the GM should suggest ones for those who did not. ### 6) When Nature Hits 0 or 7. Then your character immediately gets a new Trait (And if 0, get -1 to Max Nature, and +1 to your Nature): - **0:** Outcast, Odd, Faded, etc. - **7:** Settled, Oldfur, Skittish, etc. The group should offer suggestions and agree, the GM will break ties or mediate disputes. If you already have 5 Traits, you must replace an old one, but if you already have a Trait that fits, the group may suggest to improve that Trait by +1 instead. ### 7) Rank After a number of Winter Sessions, the GM may promote a character to a higher rank. Every new rank gives +1 to Resources or Circles, remove any passes/fails. **Tenderpaws:** After 1-2, they are promoted to Guardmouse or retired. **Guardmice:** After 3-4, they could be promoted to Patrol Guard. **Patrol Guard:** After 5-6, they could be promoted to Patrol Leader. **Patrol leader:** After 7-8, they could be promoted to Guard Captain. **Guard Captain:** Most mice retire soon after 60, regardless of rank.

##### Earning Fate and Persona Points **Fate:** Acting on your belief, working towards your goal, or playing an instinct. --- **Persona:** Playing against your belief, accomplishing your goal, and the MVP, Workhorse, and Embodiment end of Session awards.

\page # Part 3: Tests and Scores Mouseguard uses **six-sided dice (D6's)** to generate scores. Below is a table of what each roll adds to a Score. Scores determine if your character succeeds or fails whenever they are part of a **Test** or a **Conflict**. | Roll | Score | |:----:|:-------------| | 6 (great success) | 2 successes (2s) | | 4, 5 (successes) | 1 success (1s) | | 1, 2, 3 (failures) | 0 successes (0s) | ### **How do Tests work?** Every Test measures a Score against a specific Obstacle Value, which is different for each unique situation. - *(There are specific Obstacle Values listed for every action and situation throughout the book, these vary immensely, and are typically unique to every scenario.)* ### **What are Conflicts?** A competition of **Scores** against an active force controlled by the GM and uses special rules (see Part 4). ## Player and GM Turns: Mouseguard has two "Turns": one for unsafe places, and one for safe places. ### Unsafe (GM Turn): *Begins when the Mission begins, the player's leave a Safe Haven or finish a rest. * During this turn, the players decide what their characters try to do and the GM has them make **Tests** to see if they do it. Complex plans could require **more than one Test** to complete (try to represent each step of the plan as one Test). But if something is very complex (or has an active opposing force), the GM might have it be a **Conflict** instead. ### Safe (Player Turn): *Begins when the Mission is completed, inside Safe Havens, or resting during travel.* During this turn, each player character has **one free Test**, and Points called “Trait Checks” (worth 1 test per Check) that they can spend to: - Try to recover from Conditions (see table below) - Use (and maybe improve) their Skills and Abilities - Regain spent Traits or Abilities. ## Tests and Miscellaneous **Helping:** If another Player Character could assist another during a Test, they may add +1D. You may only help if you have a relevant and unique Skill, Wise, or Trait that is not being used by the Tester or a Helper. You may help if Nature, Will, Health, or Resources are being directly tested, but not for Recovery Tests. If you help in a Conflict, you join that team and share any penalties it receives, if you help during a Test, you face the same Twist or a Condition one lower than the Tester received. **Skills you don't Have:** Use Nature, but if you want to Learn It (and get a better rating for it), use Will or Health instead of Nature and after counting all Help Dice, Wises, and Gear, use half the total for your roll. Once you have tried to Learn it as many times as your Max Nature, you learn that skill at rating: 2. If you don't want to use Nature and you don't want to try and learn the skill, the base rating for every skill you don't know is 1. **Death:** Has to be listed in the “Goals” of a Conflict or Test explicitly, or a large Twist if the characters intended to Injure someone. **Nature:** When you use Nature it can “Level up” just like Health, Will, Resources, or Circles or any Skill. You can “tax” your Nature by using it to do things that aren't Escaping, Climbing, Hiding, or Foraging (which costs 1 Nature), but if you fail you lose the amount you failed by instead. If something would give you 0 Nature, reduce your Max Nature by 1 and take a Trait that represents your 'un-mouselike' behavior. If you have 0 Max Nature your character leaves the Guard after this Mission, and will not return for at least one session. But will return with 1 Max Nature after that if they do return. **Belief/Goal/Instinct:** Belief/Instinct give a Fate point, and a Goal gives Persona every time you make decision that agrees with them. **Traits:** Use these to give yourself more “Checks” in the Player Turn. Using these to fail/succeed is critical to improving your Stats.

PART 3 | Tests and Scores

\page # Part 4: Conflicts ## Conflict: When the GM decides a Conflict is appropriate, define teams, and have each Team generate their Disposition using the Table of Pg.104 Next, have each team decide on 3 Actions. Use the skills/abilities on the Table of Pg.113 Then Compare the results based on the Table of Pg.109 After that, follow the Results of those Actions described from Pg.106 to Pg.109 Finally, if neither side is at 0 or Surrenders, decide 3 more Actions and repeat until one side loses. #### Success and Failure for Tests: - Success: They get what they wanted. - Failure: They succeed and get a Condition, or they fail and there's a Twist. #### Success and Failure for Conflicts: - Ties: If both are reduced to zero in one action, both teams get what they wanted. - Winner's Disposition = Full: The winning team gets what it wanted. - Winner's Disposition > Half: The losing team gets a little of their goal or something related to it. - Winner's Disposition = Half: The losing team gets half their goal, or gives a small Condition/Twist. - Winner's Disposition < Half: The losing team gets most of their goal, or gives a large Condition/Twist.

``` ``` ## The Four Actions ### Attack An Attack is an attempt to reduce the opponent's Disposition. - Against Attack or Feint: Subtract all successes from your opponent's Disposition. - VS. Defend or Maneuver: Subtract the margin of success from your opponent's Disposition. ### Defend A Defense is an attempt to strengthen your team's Disposition. - Against Feint: the Defend fails and you may not Test. - Against Defend: (Ob 3) Add the margin of success to your Disposition. - VS. Attack or Maneuver: Add the margin of success to your Disposition. ### Feint A Feint is an attempt to trick your opponent. - Against Attack: the Feint fails and you may not Test. - Against Defend or Maneuver: (Ob 0) Subtract all successes from your opponent's Disposition. - VS. Feint: Subtract the margin of success from your opponent's Disposition. ### Maneuver A Maneuver is attempt to gain an advantage over your opponent. - VS. Attack or Defend: Spend the margin of success on the options below. - Against Feint or Maneuver: (Ob 0) Spend the margin of success on the options below. #### Options: ##### Impede (Margin of Success 1) - -1D penalty to your opponent's next action. ##### Gain Position (Margin of Success 2) - +2D bonus to your team's next action. ##### Disarm (Margin of Success 3) - Disable one of your opponent's weapons, gear items, or traits for the rest of the Conflict. A new weapon can be drawn next time a team chooses actions. **To Generate Dispostion; Arguments, Negotiations, Speeches, and Wars: add Will to their Attack stat. Chases, Fights, Vs. Animals, and Journeys: add Health/Nature to their Attack.*
