# Races from the Legend of Zelda

##### A basic look at how I think races from Zelda should work in Fifth Edition.

\page ### Author's Note: I made this because I wanted to make a Dungeon and Dragons Fifth Edition version that fit into the world of the Legend of Zelda. I started out with just a word document and then moved it to NaturalCrit's The Homebrewery to make it look more "formal". This is my first work on here, so things are not as nice as I would like them to be. Hopefully the more I work on things like this, the better I'll get. I have also omitted alignment in this text because as a player/DM, I don't find alignment very useful. If you are someone who enjoys alignment, there are many other supplements that assign alignment well. **I do not own any of the property in this text** The ideas come from Nintendo's Legend of Zelda series and the mechanics are based off of Wizards of the Coast's Dungeons and Dragons Fifth Edition. **All images are referenced to their creator on the last page** I am in no way making profit from this text (please don't sue me Nintendo). \page ### Legend of Zelda Races # Human The term Human is occasionally used to refer to Hylians and is frequently employed as an umbrella term for multiple humanoid races. **Ability Score Increase.** Increase an ability scores by 2. **Age.** Humans can have variety of ages. A Hylian typically claims adulthood around the age of 20 and can live to be 100 years old. While Sheikah and Gerudo can live up to 150 years old. **Size.** Humans range from under 5 to over 6 feet tall and have slender builds. Your size is Medium. **Speed.** Your base walking speed is 30 feet. ## Subraces While there are many different races that may be considered "human", they are all different and unique in their own ways. ### Hylian Hylians are an elf-like race that make up the predominant population of Hyrule, on which they established an organized civilization. They are born with magic-infused blood said to be a gift from the goddesses that grants them psychic powers and magical skill. Their long pointed ears are said to allow them to hear messages sent by the gods. Link and Princess Zelda belong to this race in all games of the series. Hylians are a fairly diverse species; skin, hair and eye colours vary quite a bit, and the residents of the tropical Lurelin Village have a more Caribbean complex than most others. Two races, the Kokiri and the Wind Tribe, evolved from Hylians when they migrated to the forests and the sky respectively. As well as that, Gerudo are able to procreate with Hylians - the offspring is always Gerudo in this circumstance. Despite similar appearance they have no relation to the Sheikah. #### Hylian Names Many hylian names can be applied to both men and women, though a general distinction can be made. Surnames are usually patronymic or based on vocation. Intelligence is your spellcasting ability for it. **Hylian Weapon Training.** You have proficiency with the longsword, shortsword, shortbow, and longbow. **Ears Of the Goddess.** You gain advantage with the Perception check when using your hearing. **Skill Versatility.** You gain proficiency in two skills and one tool of your choice. **Languages.** You can speak, read, and write Common, Hylian and one extra language of your choice. Hylians are fond of sprinkling their speech with words borrowed from other tongues: Gerudo curses, Zora poetic expressions, Goron industrial phrases, and so on.

\page ### Gerudo The Gerudo are a race of warrior-thieves that are prominently featured in the history and lore of Hyrule. They are both feared and respected for their martial abilities and temperament. The Gerudo tribe is indigenous to the harsh Gerudo Desert that bears their name, and they live in the Gerudo Valley and within the Gerudo Fortress. Physical Gerudo traits typically include scarlet hair, aquiline noses, gold or green eyes, round or pointed ears, and tanned or bronzed skin. The race consists entirely of women, apart from a single Gerudo male who is born every century. The male is lawfully crowned king of the tribe, and is even worshiped like a God king. When there is no male present to be king, leadership is entrusted to female chiefs. Typical Gerudo sentries carry spears and blades reminiscent to that of the Ottoman Scimitar. They are also proficient at archery and swordsmanship. Some members of the race can utilize magic. --- #### Gerudo Names Every gerudo has a birth name, a tribe name, and a matro- nymic. For example: "Anche Korsh-Agaat, daughter of Ardin". In ancient times, there use to be a prision the held Hyrule's worst criminals. Now the Gerudo have learned to survive off the land, yet, they are always looking for more inhabitable lands. > > ``` ``` #### Gerudo Traits **Ability Score Increase.** Your Charisma score increases by 1. **Fearless.** You have advantage on saving throws to become frightened. **Gerudo Weapon Training.** You have proficiency with the scimitar, spear, glaive, shortbow and longbow. **Pleasing To the Eye.** Gerudo’s are classically attractive, and many will fall for their looks. You have proficiency in the Persuasion skill. **Desert Dwellers.** You have grown up in the harsh Gerudo Desert. This has provided you with the knowledge of how to forage for yourself and keep cool in a desert climate. When not wearing heavy armor, you do not require additional drinking water during hot weather and have advantage on saving throws against extreme heat. Moving across sand does not count as difficult terrain. **Language** You can speak, read, and write Common and Geruda. Gerudo is flowing and sibilant, with rolling r's and hisses. Though it uses the Draconic script, its origins have been lost through the ages.

\page ### Sheikah The Sheikah are ancient and mysterious ninja-like warriors distinguished by, but not limited to, red eyes, and white hair, who protect the Hylian Royal Family. They bear some physical resemblance to the Hylians, but are a completely different species, with much more technological prowess and lifespans that can extend over many millennia. Physically they are extremely capable, able to run and jump better than other Hyruleans. The Sheikah are some of, if not the most potent magic-wielders in Hyrule. Most of the Sheikah are servants of the goddess Hylia. The Sheikah crying eye symbol is commonly seen in the land. It is alluded that the tear was added after the Hyrule Civil War, though the tear also appeared long before the war, thousands of years before the first hero's birth in Skyward Sword. #### Sheikah Names Sheikah names fall into two broad categories. Their real names are passed down through generations, believed to herald future accom- plishments similar to those achieved by their ancestors. Sheikahs that roam clanless often adopt a name that signifies a virtue or other concept and then try to embody that concept. For some, the chosen name is a noble quest. For others, it's a grim destiny. --- **Male Sheikah Names:** Chaas, Dagah, Dow, Ha, Jitan, Kam, Korgu, Ree, Shee, Shoda, Rucco, Ta'loh, Tahno **Female Sheikah Names:** Daka, Hila, Kah, Kaya, Lakna, Mezza, Muwo, Myahm, Shai, Sheh, Soh, Tawa, Yah **"Virtue" Names:** Chant, Creed, Danger, Despair, Empty, Fear, Hope, Magic, Nowhere, Prophecy, Quest, Reverence, Solace, Sorrow, Temerity, Torment, Weary, Whisper ---

``` ``` #### Sheikah Traits **Ability Score Increase.** Your Dexterity score increases by 1. **Sheikah Quickness.** Your base walking speed is increased to 35 feet. **Sheikah Weapon Training.** You have proficiency with the dagger, shortsword, whip, shortbow and thrown weapons. **Living In the Shadows.** You have learned to hide in the shadows. You have proficiency in the Stealth skill. **Steps of the Sheikah.** You can attempt to hide even when you are only lightly obscured by foliage, heavy rain, falling snow, mist, and other natural phenomena. **Dark Vision.** You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray. **Languages.** You can speak, read, and write Common and Sheikah. Sheikah is an ancient derivation from Common, with hard consonants and complex symbolic writing.

\page # Goron The Goron are a race of mountain-dwelling golems. Goron culture revolves around brotherhood and strength, usually referring to each other and those they deem strong as ‘Brother’ or ‘Big Brother’. Gorons show high regard for individuals who display great strength and bravery and enjoy matching their strength with others in competition such as sumo wrestling and racing. While not all Zelda games featuring Gorons include full tribes, the games that do depict as tribes depict them as headed by a patriarch who is aided by one or more elders who assume leadership of the tribe in the event that the patriarch cannot. One of the oldest races in Hyrule, Gorons' bodies are resistant to intense heat and lava and they consume rocks and minerals, which they mine from the earth. By adulthood, most Gorons gain rock-like protrusions on their backs and sometimes on their arms and head as well. These stony growths act as a natural armor and continue to grow as the Goron ages. Gorons enter the fetal position when resting, and can also assume this position for self defense or to travel at high speed by rolling. Gorons endowed with magic power can sprout metal spikes from their body while rolling. ``` ``` #### Goron Names Every goron has a birth name, a patronymic, and a clan name. For example: "Aji, son of Axyl, of the Broca clan". --- **Male Names:** Aji, Axyl, Bargoh, Bayge, Bladon, Bludo, Bohrin, Boldon, Dorill, Drak, Dugby, Fugo, Gonguron, Gorko, Gortram, Grapp, Greyson, Heehl, Jengo, Kabetta, Kairo, Krane, Lyndae, Naddon, Offrak, Pelison, Pyle, Rogaro, Rohan, Slergo, Strade, Tanko, Tray, Volcon **Clan Names:** Broca, Darb, Eldin, Gero, Golow, Goro, Goronbi, Medingo, Ordorac, Rabac, Ternio, Trilbi, Ulri #### Goron Traits **Ability Score Increase.** Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Constitution score increases by 1. **Age.** Gorons have a long life. They enter adulthood in their fifties and can live up to 300 years old. **Size.** Gorons are between 7 and 8 feet tall and weigh between 700 and 800 pounds. Your size is Medium. **Speed.** Your base walking speed is 30 feet. **Natural Athlete.** You have proficiency in the Athletics skill. **Powerful Build.** You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift. **Rock Flesh.** You have a natural armor class of 12 + your Consitution Modifier. If you are using a shield, you can apply the shield's bonus as usual. **Curl.** When you are wearing no armor and have both hands free, you can spend 5 feet of movement to curl into a ball, or back into your normal stance. While curled up you can use your movement speed to roll. This speed is halved when rolling uphill or doubled when rolling downhill. Any sudden elevation of 3 feet or more, such as a low wall, prevents you from rolling over it, as you cannot jump while curled. While curled, you gain a +2 bonus to AC, you have disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight, you can't take reactions, and the only actions you can take are the Dash action or the Attack action to make unarmed strikes, using your body to slam into the target. If you hit the target in this way, you deal bludgeoning damage equal to 1d6 + your Strength modifier, instead of the damage normal for an unarmed strike. **Heart of the Volcano.** You have resistance to fire damage. **Sink Before Swim.** You can't swim, as your body is denser than water. When you enter a body of liquid you immediately sink to the bottom at a rate of 60 feet per round and must hold your breath. You can still use your movement speed to walk (or roll) along the bottom of the area. **Fists of Stone** You have proficiency with unarmed strikes that do 1d6 + your strength modifier. **Languages.** You can speak, read, and write Common and speak Primordial (Terran) but their Primordial is a spoken language only and the Goron write in ideograms.

\page # Kokiri The Kokiri are a pixie-like race who inhabit the Kokiri Forest. They are one of two races who branched from the Hylians…This was because they wanted to live a more natural life as Hyrule continued to industrialize. They are shielded by the Great Deku Tree who considers them to be his children, and each receives a small fairy that is their lifelong friend, guardian, and teacher. They do not age once they grow up into kids thanks to the Deku Tree's power. #### Kokiri Names A kokiri has only a given name, and there are no distinctions between male and female names. --- **Kokiri Names:** Ala, Amo, Breena, Chio, Damia, Daz, Dego, Difu, Dimble, Ella, Eldon, Erky, Frug, Gimble, Kula, Lilli, Maca, Natie, Nemo, Nido, Nissa, Nigi, Nyx, Oaki, Oda, Orla, Orryn, Peeks, Pepp, Seebo, Tana, Tasho, Treldun, Walton, Wrenn, Zanna, Zode, Zooki --- #### Kokiri Traits **Ability Score Increase.** Your Intelligence score increases by 2, and your Dexterity score by 1. **Age.** The Kokiri are an ageless race that takes the form of human children. Like Hylians, they possess long, pointed ears. Apart from Saria, all known Kokiri have either blonde or red hair. Despite their agelessness, Kokiri are still mortal beings that can be killed. **Size.** Kokiri are between 3 and 4 feet tall and weigh around 60 pounds. Your size is Small. **Speed.** Your base walking speed is 25 feet. **Fairy Guardian.** You were assigned a fairy by the Great Deku tree. The fairy can either be a white, blue, yellow, green, or purple hue. Your fairy can communicate with you verbally and can read Common and Sylvan. **Natural Illusionist.** You know the Minor Illusion cantrip. Intelligence is your spellcasting modifier for it. **Speak with Small Beasts.** Through sound and gestures, you may communicate simple ideas with Small or smaller beasts. **Kokiri Nimbleness.** You can move through a space of any creature that is of a size larger than yours. **Languages.** You can read, speak, and write Common and Sylvan. Kokiris write very little, so they don't have a rich body of literature. Their oral tradition, however, is very strong.

Versus a typical monster or warrior, one of these fairies can at best serve as a distraction. One of these fairies flies without effort, and usually only lands when it loses consciousness.

>##### Variant: Skull Kid. > Instead of having a Fairy Guardian, you may choose to become a skull kid. They are a race of diminutive, mischievous beings that reside in forests. When non-fairy folk get lost in Lost Woods, they are cursed to become Stalfos, whereas Navi suggests that when children get lost in the woods, they may become Skull Kids. > > **Natural Performer.** You gain proficiency with the flute, blowpipe, and the Performance skill. Also, you may use your flute as a blowpipe. > >**Dark Vision.** You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

\page # Rito The Rito are primarily avian in appearance, possessing wings, a beak and talons… While Rito can fly forward, they cannot ascend on their own and rely on the wind to lift them upwards. The art of creating an updraft to soar high into the sky, which Revali could do, is considered to be a masterpiece of aerial techniques even among the Rito. Rito have poor night vision and struggle to see in dimly lit places. They prefer to eat meat or fish, like birds of prey. Their feathers retain heat, helpful for both the chilly climate they live in during Breath of the Wild and for when they fly at high altitudes. A young Rito's feathers molt once per year, and the feathers have formed a thriving industry for the Rito who use them to craft clothes for Hylians or beds. Known for their musical abilities, the Rito pass down legends in the form of songs. They are not particularly long-lived. #### Rito Names Rito names are quite melodic. Unlike many other races, Ritos don't use a clan name to distinguish. --- **Male Names:** Bet, Elmon, Ferth, Gulooss, Ilit, Ivoo, Kash, Nysat, Obela, Omi, Rallasht, Rishliro, Skusht, Tagnyri **Female Names:** Anla, Asselo, Bako, Bonots, Croki, Eso, Frieni, Gino, Ica, Ido, Kha, Kraki, Missa, Nalliat, Nillil, Sone --- #### Rito Traits **Ability Score Increase.** Your Dexterity score increases by 2, and your Wisdom score increases by 1. **Age.** Rito reach maturity by age 3. Compared to humans, rito don’t usually live longer than 30 years. **Size.** Rito are about 5 feet tall. They have thin, lightweight bodies that weigh between 80 and 100 pounds. Your size is Medium. **Speed.** Your base walking speed is 30 feet. **Flight.** You have a fly speed of 40 feet. When flying, you can be thrown off course by heavy winds. To fly, you can’t be wearing medium or heavy armor and must have your hands free. **Talons.** You are proficient with your unarmed strikes, which deal 1d4 slashing damage on a hit. **Weapons of the Rito.** You have proficiency with all types of bows. Your improved sight also lets you ignore quarter cover. **Languages.** You can speak, read, and write Common and Ritoni.

# Twili Twili are a race that come from the Twilight Realm...The Twili come from a group referred to as the Interlopers, who used extraordinary magic to dominate a war between Hylians for the Triforce. As well as the Triforce, they also had eyes for the Sacred Realm. Seeing this, the Golden Goddesses ordered the Light Spirits to seal their magic in the Fused Shadow; the Interlopers were then banished to the Twilight Realm, where they adapted and evolved into the Twili…The skin tone of the Twili is mostly black while their faces, necks, and chest tend to be gray. The Twili have long limbs, necks, and heads, and great variances in appearance. #### Twili Names Twili have different names for both male and female. Instead of having a clan name, their clan is shown by distinct markings on their chests. --- **Male Names:** Caalt, Calc, Daand, Garc, Godt, Kalt, Kerc, Nark, Nond, Raalc, Taund, Tung, Vadt, Vard, Zaarn **Female Names:** Adha, Agra, Cokna, Ende, Ilri, Okna, Lelza, Sagna, Sikra, Mivna, Vamza, Yavla, Zelma, Zanda #### Twili Traits **Ability Score Increase.** Your Wisdom score is increases by 2 and Intelligence score increases by 1. **Age.** Twili reach adulthood in their late teens and live for about a century. **Size.** Twili are taller and leaner than humans, with most a slender 6 feet in height. Your size is Medium. **Speed.** Your base walking speed is 30 feet. **Dark Vision.** You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray. **Twili Psionics.** You know the Mage Hand cantrip, and the hand is invisible when you cast the cantrip with this trait. When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the Jump spell once with this trait, and you regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. When you reach 5th level, you can cast the Misty Step spell once with this trait, and you regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for these spells. When you cast them with this trait, they don't require components. **Twilight Stride.** You teleport yourself from your current location to any dimly lit spot within 200 feet of you. You arrive at exactly the spot desired. It can be a place you can see, one you can visualize, or one you can describe by stating distance and direction, such as “ 100 feet straight downward” or “upward to the northwest at a 45-degree angle, 50 feet.” You can bring along objects as long as their weight doesn’t exceed what you can carry. If you would arrive in a place already occupied by an object or a creature, you take 4d6 force damage, and the teleportation fails. Once you use this trait, you can't use it again until you finish a long rest. **Languages.** You can speak, read, and write Common and Undercommon.

\page # Zora The Zora are a race of aquatic piscine humanoids…Zora rely heavily on water, and can only live on land for limited time periods. Zora are mostly seen gracefully swimming about and frolicking in water. Besides routine swimming and sports, Zora also enjoy music. Most Zora do not wear clothing, and they are generally covered in silver [or red] scales…Where humans sometimes have long hair, average Zora have rear-hanging caudal extensions that resemble tails. These tails undulate periodically, which gives a Zora's head the unique semblance of a fish. They are sometimes depicted as having webbed feet and hands. They lack ears in the traditional sense, but do have pronounced noses and gills on their abdomen. Their fins can be used to fight by extending out to serve as sharp weapons. Zora lay eggs to reproduce. Zora eggs need to be kept in cold, clean water to develop healthily, and every egg from the same clutch must be kept together for them to hatch. Newborn Zora are tadpole-like with a circular body and a long, skinny tail ending in a fluke. #### Zora Names Among zoras, little distinction exists between male and female names---the groupings here reflect only general tendencies. Males use patronymic surnames while females use matronymic names, followed by their clan name. For example: "Dunma, daughter of Finley, of the Brynna clan". --- **Male Names:** Bazz, Cleff, Dento, Evan, Fronk, Gaddison, Gruve, Japas, Jiahto, Ledo, Muzu, Ralis, Rivan, Segin, Tijo, Toto, Trello, Tumbo **Female Names:** Dunma, Finley, Kodah, Japas, Kayden, Keye, Laflat, Laruta, Lulu, Marot, Rutela, Tona, Torfeau, Totikka, Tula **Clan Names:** Brynna, Cephia, Cora, Deya, Ferona, Komo, Lanayru, Laverra, Lodrum, Nautelle, Pico, Samasa, Telta, Torin, Ulria, Zelo, Zorana #### Zora Traits **Ability Score Increase.** Your Strength, Constitution, and Charisma scores each increase by 1. **Age.** Zora reach maturity around age 40 and can live up to 400 years. **Size.** Zora are slightly taller than humans, averaging about 6 feet tall. Your size is Medium. **Speed.** Your base walking speed is 30 feet, and you have a swimming speed of 30 feet. **Amphibious.** You can breathe air and water. **Control Water.** A child of the water, you can call on the magic of elemental water. You can cast Fog Cloud with this trait. Starting at 5th level, you can also cast Wall of Water with it. Once you cast a spell with this trait, you can't do so again until you finish a long rest. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells. **Emissary of the Sea.** Aquatic beasts have an extraordinary affinity with your people. You can communicate simple ideas with beasts that can breathe water.
