# Introduction The Green Skull is a series of five "one-shot" adventures, one for each tier of play. The primary antagonist is Greenface, a goblin warlock, though ultimately the villain is her patron, the slumbering dracolich Verdaxichite. This adventure is designed as a setting-neutral recurring side-story to a larger campaign. As ever, feel free to chop and change, hack and slash, even copy and paste as you see fit. ## Background Part I takes place in and around Rockshade, a middling, walled town amidst the Deepwarren Woods, quite near a large butte called Geraldine Rock. The rock rises monolithically above the trees and can be seen for miles around. It does literally cast a shadow over Rockshade in the evening. Deepwarren Wood is dotted with smaller settlements, even lone cottages. Though thickly wooded, this area was long ago tamed by humanoids, though rogue elements still prowl the nights. Magic users in Deepwarren Wood are going missing, and mysterious creatures have been peering through windows at night. This is because the goblin warlock Greenface, has found a cave in the side of Geraldine Rock and moved her ragtag tribe in there. Her patron commands her to amass magical power; she is doing so by kidnapping spellcasters, interrogating them and robbing them blind. The party must discover what is plaguing the night and where the mages are going. ``` ``` ## Running the Adventure Part I is designed for four to six adventurers of level 4 and should take 3-6 hours to complete. It takes place in the town of Rockshade, which is nestled in the eastern edges of Deepwarren Wood and is quite literally overshadowed each sunset by Geraldine Rock, a huge butte which juts out of the wood to the west of town. This locale can be adapted to any world of your choosing. You just need a town, a wood, and a landmark within that wood.

\page # The Villain Herself Greenface is short, even for a goblin, with skin that is ash-grey and scarred by abuse and exposure. She has a wiry mohawk of black, oily bristles, and a number of piercings in each of her long, gently drooping ears. Her eponymous face is tattooed with a precise and sharply outlined skull design. It's a bright, bony white that glows a pale and pallid green when she uses magic. Greenface has never known any other name. She was born into fungus farming in a faraway tribe, and savagely beaten by her betters pretty much every day thereafter. At first she dreamed of acceptance, and then after years of abuse began instead to plot destruction. Her ambition went unnoticed except by a mysterious being which visited her dreams; a green skull which promised her power. A sworn oath later she was tearing through the tribe with green fire leaping from her hands. That was many years ago now. She is a goblin boss (MM pg. 166) with five levels in Warlock, specifically the pact of the tome. Her otherworldy patron is the Undying (SCAG, pg. 139). ### Misguided Motivations Greenface is visited nightly by the Green Skull,
her patron. It advises and directs her, and its
current imperative is to swell her magical powers.
She doesn’t know what its purposes are at this point,
but the acquisition of power aligns with her own desires
and so she follows its suggestions. Her tome of shadows allows her to copy ritual spells, which seems to her an immediate and relatively easy way to amass power. She is achieving this end by kidnapping magic users in the region, forcing her captives to recount what they know or give up their spell books before killing them. ### Malign Machinations Greenface is a cunning leader, specific in her instructions and careful in her commitments. The only goblins under her command are those which can respect such qualities, and so are very different from the usual slathering sword-fodder which adventurers may have come to know. They move quickly, quietly and efficiently, advancing rather than rushing and falling back rather than fleeing. Greenface has them out scouting every night, and whenever one of her band discovers a mage she commits several to a prolonged stake-out. These investigators will watch a target closely to learn their routine, and then relay this information to Greenface so that she may best plan the attack. She often takes the field herself, but hangs well back to observe, only intervening with her magic if straits seem dire and she’s certain she won’t be discovered. ``` ``` ### Roleplaying Greenface Greenface has lived a life beneath the heel of those more powerful than her; her personality is built largely around suspicion and mistrust tempered by an excellent judge of character. She thinks a lot more than she speaks, and openly glowers at people she dislikes without disguising her expression. Once her spies have seen the party at night, you might find it prudent to adjust her defenses to specifically include traps or tricks which they are likely to fall prey to. If the party's cleric is of a sympathetic nature she might use an innocent prisoner as bait, or she might waterlog a certain room if the wizard is fond of electrical spells. Greenface's statistics can be found in the Monsters appendix, on page 29.

\page # Rockshade Rockshade is a large town enveloped by a wall, a thin band of farmland and lumber yards, and then the treeline. It has a population of just over two-thousand, most of whom make their living from lumber or retail enterprises. If forced to lean entirely on its own granaries, Rockshade wouldn't last more than a few weeks; most of the food is imported from more agrible regions in exchange for fine timber. Hunting is fine in Deepwarren Wood, and the wells in the region are pure and full. #### 1. Town Hall Rockshade is ruled by a mayor, elected for ten-year terms by a majority vote. The current mayor is the long suffering Agnes Dinthammer, a dwarven grandmother who despairs of her constituents ability to go "one bloody week without doing something [expletive] infantile!" #### 2. The Old Mill Anew First a mill, then an inn, then very briefly a fiery inferno. After that it was a blackened husk for a time, and now it is an inn again. This is the town's institutional pub, the local watering hole, and the place with the comfiest beds. #### 3. Backwynd Green Previously Backwynd Alley, but after repeated demolitions and constant petitions from local druids, gardeners and arborists, now a public park accessible through a gatehouse at the north. Bordered on all sides by people's back doors. Children who live in a house which backs on to the green are often very popular among their peers. #### 4. The Watch House Encompassing three adjacent buildings and the yard behind them, the Watch has grown with the town. It is headed by Captain Velhos DonFarben, one of the questgivers listed in the dramatis personae on page 7. ``` ``` #### 5. Thumbnicker's General Store Thaddeon Thumbnicker is a gnome with a penchant for cataloguing. Accordingly he has everything the adventurer might need, sorted by properties and organised by systems which only Thaddeon could ever understand. He's always eager to leap over the counter and dive into the chaotic labyrinth of sundries and find something for a customer. #### 6. Volkonnerson's Finest Arms and Armour Dougan Volkonnerson is a dwarf who came to Rockshade when he married Mayor Dinthammer's daughter, Higgenbeth. He makes all manner of weapons and armour save axes; he took one look at Henry Kithering's crafts and swore never to compete in that market. #### 7. Kithering Forestry Supplies Henry Kithering is an old, wiry half-elf who makes tools for the town's tradesmen, especially axes for the timber industry. He's definitely showing his age, but there's a twinkle in his eye yet, and his axes are second to none. #### 8. Rockshade Correspondence College An odd corner building which sells material components for spells and minor magical items, as well as books on a variety of subjects, stationery and postal supples. It is run by Magos Derek Tenwerren, one of the questgivers listed in the dramatis personae on page 7. #### 9. Temple of Lumara A tall, domed building featuring an icon of a nondescript woman holding a polished sphere. Lumara is a kind and merciful goddess of light, life and the moon. Her clerics are called moon priests, chief among them in Rockshade is Moonspeaker Morrikai, a human woman with silver hair. #### 10. Giltweather's Groceries A store selling fresh produce in the shopfront and hosting a daily farmer's market in the yard out back. Adventurers seeking travel rations will find them in good supply here. The market is frequented by Gell Harathorn, one of the questgivers listed in the dramatis personae on page 7.

#### The North Road The road heading north out of Rockshade carries on that way to Duum's Embrace, the capital city of Twegen. More locally though, a branch comes off it and curves around to the west, through Deepwarren Wood to encircle Geraldine Rock. #### The East Road Leaving Rockshade to the east will eventually land one on the coast after around two months of walking. It's the least used of the three gates, only trade caravans and the few who live beyond the wall that way frequent it. #### The South Road The south road heads for the border with Threora, but a branch does depart it to the west to swoop through Deepwarren Wood and meet its counterpart
on the other side of Geraldine Rock.

\page ## Dramatis Personae Here you will find a brief summary of a few important NPCs in and around Rockshade, beginning with those who have important quests or hooks for your party. #### Captain Velhos DonFarben A tall, muscular human with clipped black hair, a strong jawline, and two little white scars below her right eye from where a wolf bit her cheekbone. She wears a steel breastplate with her captain's badge set over her heart, with uniform black leathers and clothes beneath that. She is the Captain of the Rockshade Town Watch and takes her job very seriously. She doesn't tolerate slack watchers, so keeps herself and her subordinates in good shape. She's received lots of reports of goblins spying at night, but her watchers have never caught any. She wants the goblins caught and their motives interrogated. She's also heard about the disappearances but hasn't heard that they were all magic users.

##### Velhos DonFarben's Information Captain DonFarben has been assembling snippets of the truth for some weeks now. - Goblins are all over the town and surrounding villages every night. - The goblins are avoiding conflict except when they kidnap someone. - She suspects that they're looking for something specific, because they're not looting indiscriminately, which also implies that they are answerable to a leader.

**Quest Hooks and Rewards** Captain DonFarben can be found in the Watch House during the day, and briefly each evening in The Old Mill Anew, having a pint. She has posted a public bounty; 5 pieces of gold to anyone who can capture one of the so-called "Night Goblins" alive and present it to the Town Watch for interrogation. The terms are 5 gp per goblin, not per captor. *If the party wish to undertake this bounty, they must divise their own methods.* She also has a private request. She and her sergeants are busy with this goblin nonsense and can't work training in to their schedules. Head in to the yard and put the new probationary constables through their paces. They need truncheon work, sword work, and interpersonal work. Spend eight hours teaching them to whack, stab, intimidate or persuade and she'll compensate you. 8 SP per member. *The details of this training can be found on page 10.* The following quest is conditional: the party must know where the goblins are coming from and what they're after. If they report as much to Captain DonFarben she will charge them to end the goblin incursion by whatever means necessary. She'll pay them each 50 GP and gift them each a watcher's truncheon if they're successful. ``` ``` #### Gell Harathorn A young, non-binary wood-elf who lives in Deepwarren Woods and only comes back to civilisation for things they can't make, farm or hunt themselves. They are thin and wiry, with skin freckled and taut from exposure and hard work, and messy red hair kept short enough to be out of their eyes. They live and breath for self-sufficiency, but they're not stupid enough to die for it. They can cast the *druidcraft* cantrip. They came back this morning to say that their snares and traps keep getting robbed. The ones west of Geraldine Rock most consistently.

##### Gell Harathorn's Information Gell lives in Deepwarren Wood, north-west of town. They've surmised a few things over the last few days. - Something near the western face of Geraldine Rock needs a lot of food. - That same thing is dexterous enough to disarm traps and smart enough to leave no tracks.

**Quest Hooks and Rewards** Gell can be found in Giltweather's Groceries, chatting with Ma Giltweather, or in The Old Mill Anew inspecting the menu. They're just in town for some supplies and a meal, since their traps are being robbed. If somebody covers it (1 sp) or feeds them they'll remember it as a favour. They live in the woods, and might pay it back later by freeing the party if they're captured, or recovering their unconscious bodies, or offering them a place to stay the night. They live in a log cabin of their own construction, surrounded by a well-tended garden and a fence of stone and wood. It's about an hour's walk into the wood. #### Magos Derek Tenwerren A human in his late fifties, tall and slightly stooped with oncoming age. Round spectacles, warm smile, pale skin with brown hair and a stubbly beard beginning to go white. Neat but old clothes, soft browns and natural pastels. Head of a regional correspondence group for practising magi, the Rockshade Correspondence College. He essentially runs the newsletter and offers advice. He's very worried because just today he received news that elderly halfling Beverly Broadflower, one of his oldest compatriots, has gone missing. This is the fourth of his correspondents to have vanished in as many weeks. He doesn't know what's going on, and is hesitant to put anyone in danger, but is desperate to safeguard his remaining friends.

##### Derek Tenwerren's Information Derek has noticed a disturbing pattern over the past few weeks. - Magic users are mysteriously vanishing from the area. Two from out in the wood, two from in Rockshade. - Beverly's last letter mentioned that some of the neighbours had heard people skulking around at nights.

\page **Quest Hooks and Rewards** Derek can be found in the Rockshade Correspondence College, or wringing his hands nervously outside the Watch House. Derek would be very grateful if someone could deliver the word to Nara Dinariel, who lives two hour's walk down the south road. He would do it, but doesn't feel safe in the wood. He'll pay each party member 1 gp for their trouble. *The details of this delivery can be found on page 10.* Derek understands the Watch are swamped right now, so he's hoping somebody capable can investigate Beverly's house, and see if they can learn what happened. He'll provide a healing potion on acceptance, just in case, and a book which can teach the *Prestidigitation* cantrip on completion. *The details of Beverly's house and the clues within can be found on page 9.* #### Archdruid Odilvine Decidrion An elderly wood-elf known to most as "Odd," a nickname he enjoys and encourages. Odd has no fixed address, but functionally lives in Backwynd Green, where he goes to rest. He is head of the Deepwarren Circle, a loose group of local druids. #### Mayor Agnes Dinthammer Mayor of Rockshade and matriarch of the dwarven House Dinthammer. Agnes is most of the way through her second term as mayor, totally seventeen years wearing the "bloody apt chain." Though she talks as though she despises her job and the people she serves, in fact her demeanour masks the opposite; a deep love of Rockshade and those in it. #### Higgenbeth Dinthammer A tanner and leatherworker who convinced her husband to move two-hundred miles to marry her. Her tannery is beyond the walls, and she sells her wares through Dougan's shopfront. #### Gregory DonSuffran Greg is the publican of The Old Mill Anew. He's a tall, bearded, barrel-chested human who inherited the place from his father just after it was rebuilt. He was a lumberjack in his youth and has decorated the Mill Anew to that taste, which puts him in good stead with most of his customers. #### Ma Giltweather Ma's real name is a subject of popular myth. She's a hardworking human woman in her sixties and she's not telling. Passersby whisper guesses like "Marjorie" or "Myriam" or "Mephistopheles," but none come close. Her name is Joleen, and nobody has ever guessed it. #### Henry Kithering Henry is old, even for a half-elf, but spry and keen-eyed. Henry loves a good story, and spends most evenings in The Old Mill Anew telling them or hearing them. #### Moonspeaker Morrikai The high priest of the Temple of Lumara in Rockshade, Moonspeaker Morrikai is a serene human woman who has time for everybody, even those outside her faith. She will cast *cure wounds* or *aid* upon adventurers who donate twelve silver pieces to the Temple, one for each moon of the year. #### Thaddeon Thumbnicker Thaddeon rarely leaves his general store, and takes great joy in rearranging and optimising its contents. He talks faster than most people can keep up with, but he's easy to negotiate with if you can match his speed. #### Dougan Volkonnerson Blacksmith extraordinaire, moved to Rockshade ten years ago to marry Higgenbeth Dinthammer. Has a deep respect for old Henry Kithering, and won't make an axe while Henry is in business. ### Kidnapped Townsfolk #### Beverly Broadflower A young halfling woman just getting her start as a wizard while working mornings as a baker. Taken from her house after the "Night Goblins" saw her casting *prestidigitation*. #### Mikael Soratheon An elderly human wizard with a long grey beard and a pointed hat. Swiped from his upstairs bedroom after the "Night Goblins" saw him reading a spellbook while an *unseen servant* did the washing up. #### Donovale Threnwarvyoolax A bold and talkative silver dragonborn who was taken off the street one night while walking. The "Night Goblins" saw him use *purify food and drink* a number of times, something he does before every meal since he began training as a cleric. #### Janey Blackout A wine coloured tiefling bard, taken from the street one night while drunk. The "Night Goblins" saw her performance, which makes generous use of *thaumaturgy*. She doesn't know any rituals.

\page ## Beverly Broadflower's House Just behind the very southernmost wall tower of Rockshade is a neat, modest little house which a human might find snug. For a halfling, it's perfect, and indeed Beverly seems to have thoroughly enjoyed her time in it. The place is painted in bright yellows and blues, adorned with paintings of still life and landscapes. The gregarious decor is ruined somewhat by the shattered front window and the disarray of the front living room. There are several clues to be found here by adventurers with the right skills. #### Strength In the fracas an armoire that was definitely bought from a human has fallen over. Roll a Strength (Athletics) check to lift and replace it. ##### Armoire Clues | Athletics | Result | |:----:|:-------------| | <5 | The armoire won't budge. No information is found. | | 6-10 | You lift the armoire awkwardly, smudging the evidence below. You can discern what might have been footprints on the carpet, left in something brown and sticky. | | 11-15 | You hoist the armoire bodily, revealing several sets of overlapping footprints, but their are too smudged to glean much from. | | 16-20 | You heft the armoire neatly, revealing several pristeen sets of small footprints in partially dried blood, as might be made by a number of small humanoids. | | 20+ | The armoire practically glides back to verticality, revealing perfect goblin prints with some pine needles still stuck in them. | #### Dexterity The intruders have left a locked box painted with yellow flowers on the kitchen table. It shows signs of failed forced entry, and there are some abandoned lock picks next to it. Roll a Dexterity check to open it, adding your proficiency bonus if you are proficient in Thieves' Tools. ##### Box Clues | Thieves' Tools | Result | |:----:|:-------------| | <5 | Your attempts seize the lock completely. The box contains a polished crystal orb which any spellcaster will recognise as an arcane focus.| ``` ``` #### Intelligence Surveying the scene for details is one thing; piecing together a narrative is another. Roll an Intelligence (Investigation) check to assemble a timeline. ##### Timeline Clues | Investigation | Result | |:----:|:-------------| | <5 | The window was probably broken from the outside. | | 6-10 | The window was broken, and Beverly was dragged out through it. | | 11-15 | The window was broken, Beverly put up a fight, multiple goblins seized her and carted her off. | | 16-20 | Beverly saw three goblins through the window. There are no good handholds, which means they brought their own way. | #### Wisdom Casting a keen eye over the place is a good place to start. \page ## Side Quests ### Training the Recruits This sidequest can readily be cut or reduced if time presses; it is intended as a lighthearted roleplaying exercise. There are twice as many probationary constables as there are party members, a mixture that is mostly human with one half-orc and one halfling thrown in. Remember that the quest is for eight hours of training, a whole working day. Players should choose one of their character's skill proficiencies or weapon proficiencies to train the recruits in. Have the player justify how the skill in question might benefit an officer of the Watch, and then work with them to play out the scene. A rogue might have them climb the Watch House wall to better pursue criminals, a bard and a paladin might play "good cop bad cop" and have the recruits take notes. This should only be taken as seriously as you'd like to take it. A barbarian might have all of the recruits attack her at once so that she can best them bare-handed and teach them the vital lesson of "humility." Call for rolls if you think you should, but consider letting your players tell a story unfettered for a moment. Captain DonFarben will pay each of them 8 sp for their time, assuming the day wasn't a total disaster. ``` ``` ### Nara Dinariel's House The trip to Nara's house is a four-hour round trip, two hours down the south road and two hours back. The road is wild enough that you may treat it as Deepwarren Wood and roll accordingly on the tables provided on page 12. The encounters may happen before, during or after the party reaches Nara's house at your discretion. Once they arrive, read the following.

Sure enough, just about two hours after you leave Rockshade you see a hand-painted sign hanging from a tree-limb to your left. It reads "DINARIEL," and the limb points along a well-trodden path between the pines. Barely thirty feet deep into the treeline you come to a tumbledown garden gone wild with herbs, gourds, wildflowers and birdbaths. A path of stepping stones winds through the chaotic scenery and chirping birds, leading to a stone cottage in far better condition than its grounds. A heavy iron knocker hangs from the front door invitingly.

***The Knocker.*** The simple horse-shoe shaped knocker is enchanted with a *magic mouth* spell. The trigger is somebody touching it, and the effect is a recording of Nara's voice yelling "KNOCK!" at thunderous volume. Nara laughs quietly at her own joke as she answers. She's a slight old high-elf, not quite ancient but definitely elderly. She's a 7th-level wizard, but mostly an academic. She sets an *unseen servant* fetching tea and biscuits as she recieves the news with great gravity. She reports that she has heart scuttling outside at night, but this deep in the wood that could have been anything. In any case, she sets her *unseen servant* to pack her things and departs with the party back towards town.

\page ## A Terrible Kidnapping At some point during the adventure, the "Night Goblins" will attempt to kidnap one of the spellcasters in the party. If your party doesn't have one, place a magically inclined NPC in the room next to theirs in the inn, or use an existing NPC that they've become attached to. The timing of this event will depend upon the speed with which your group has progressed through the adventure. If they've solved most if it in the first day, it could happen on the first night. If it's taking them a little longer, throw it in on any given night. ### The Sequence of Events Greenface's crew are very methodical and very patient when they do their work. Their plan unfolds as follows. #### Watch and Wait Goblins will observe the victim in secret, learning their patterns, and decide on the best moment to strike. They will only strike at night time, and will bring up to six goblins to get the job done. #### Lure or Lull The goblins will either concoct some way to coax their target out into the open, or they'll try to ensure that they are sleeping soundly by minimising disturbances and remaining totally hidden. #### Strike In the night, the goblins will burst silently from hiding and move on their target. If the victim is in the in the inn, they'll grease the window before they slide it up and prop it open. They roll Dexterity (Stealth) checks as usual, and the sleeping victim rolls at disadvantage to detect them. If the victim awakes, iniative is rolled before the plan can continue. The goblins will gag their victim first, then bind their hands. Each binding is an assisted grapple, giving the target an opportunity to wake up and resist the attempt. The grapple checks are rolled at advantage owing to the help
their binder recieves from their companions. A sleeping target cannot contest these checks. The victims neighbours and companions might hear
a ruckus if one is made. #### Extraction Once the target is secure, the goblins will use whatever means they have at their disposal to get them to a rooftop,
an alleyway, or anywhere else out of sight of the Watch. From there, either by labourious movements or with help from Greenface, who can cast *fly*, they will bundle the
target out of town and off to Geraldine Rock. ``` ``` ### Kidnapped! If an NPC was kidnapped, simply put them in to the fifth cage in Greenface's prison. If a party member was kidnapped, they are dragged off into the wood towards Geraldine Rock. They hear the goblins talking intermittently, but are too dazed to make out specifics aside from the words "cave," "prison," and "Greenface." Once this information is passed on, roll on the Deepwarren Wood combat encounter table on page 12, rerolling 1's. The creature in question runs across the goblins, giving the adventurer a chance to make their escape. They might lose their money or a piece of gear in the ordeal. ### Variant: A Terrible Burglary Rather than kidnapping a whole humanoid, the goblins might instead go for a wizard's spellbook, or similarly significant repository of magical power such as a cleric's holy symbol or a bard's instrument. In this case, run the same sequence of events but with theft as the goal, giving the character in question the same chances to wake up and interrupt procedings.

\page ## Deepwarren Wood A forest of tall pines interspersed with other trees. The floor is mostly a mat of dead pine needles, but here and there the terrain is varied enough to support shrubs and bushes. Dense that the floor is almost entirely in shade, even in the day, and regular enough that getting lost is a certainty without taking certain precautions. The party may venture into the wood a number of times. For each four hours that they spend within it, roll once on each of the tables on this page. The resulting events may happen in any sequence of your choice, or even simultaneously. If the four hours takes place at night, you may forgo rolling on the roleplay encounter table for an additional roll on the combat encounter table. #### Finding Greenface Once the party discover that the "Night Goblins" are coming from the wood, even from the rock, they're likely to venture off in search of them. They might stake out a magic user's house and follow the patrol home, or they might simply range through the wood and hope to find some clue of their existence. Adjudicate such activities as you see fit. If they get stuck for too long, you could have Greenface arrive home to Geraldine Rock from a patrol or cast some dread spell, betraying her presence with a brief and distant green glow from the rock.

## The Geraldine Caves Greenface has set up her lair in a cave system in the western face of Geraldine Rock. With thirty-five goblins and an ogre at her disposal she's had no trouble digging them out to her liking. #### Alarm! Alarm! The first creature to be attacked and not killed outright will sound the alarm. Ensure that you mention Greenface by name when this happens, and drop further references to her as the dungeon progresses. #### Tight Spaces The lair is latticed by tunnels kept purposefully narrow and treacherous for larger creatures. Any creature which is Medium or larger must squeeze to fit through these. These are represented by the dotted lines on the map. Each entrance requires a DC 17 Wisdom (Perception) check to spot. #### Dark and Gloomy Except where a torch, fire or brazier is shown, this dungeon is in total darkness. The air is cool and there is a persistent smell of wet stone. This is accompanied by the distant sound of dripping water. ``` ``` #### Slippery Foes The goblins in this dungeon aren't opposed to falling back to a better position. The quantities of goblin in each room assume that none of them have moved; you may wish to have them adapt to the party's arrival. In this case, keep a table handy showing how many goblins and bosses are in each room. In total there are thirty goblins and five bosses. #### Gaining Entrance The door is a 2000 lb. slab of stone. Greenface comes and goes using *meld into stone* or flying in through the ventilation shaft. Her goblins attract the attention of the lookout stationed to the north of the door. The lookout then rouses Whompo the ogre to lift the slab from inside. The party might attempt to fool the lookout and have Whompo open the door for them. They might attempt to assassinate the lookout and sneak in via his passage. They may even have some means of destroying or opening the door themselves. If the party gets stuck for too long you can create an opening for them by having a night patrol or a hunting party return. This gives them the opportunity to charge or sneak in while the door is open. Remember that there are only 35 goblins in Greenface's crew, so subtract any who appear in this hunting party from the dungeon's full complement.

\page #### 1. Whompo's Cavern

The smell of cool, wet rock permeates the air, underlined by a heavy musk and a faint whiff of something like rancid meat. This room is craggy and cavernous, naturally formed, and is dark save for two torches by the worked entrance.

***Whompo.*** Asleep near the northern wall of the cavern is an ogre. He lies on a filthy mat of crudely-stitched furs and is shrouded slightly by a pile of animal bones and decaying meat. He snores thunderously, sound asleep, and he'll remain that way unless he takes 10 damage of any kind. If he detects a threat to the lair, he'll bellow the alarm and don his howdah, a portable fortress built to sit on his mighty shoulders. Once Whompo gets his howdah on, three goblins and a goblin boss will attempt to board it. *Whompo's statistics can be found on page 28.* ***Goblins.*** There are seven goblins and one goblin boss in this room. Once alerted to a threat, they'll take up defensive positions. Three will take to the guard stands, the boss and three others will clamber up the outcrop, and the lookout will remain in his secret tunnel, firing from it when he can and attempting to wake Whompo by shouting. *Goblin statistics can be found on page 27.* ***Guard Stands.*** There are three wooden guard stands in the room, two on the eastern wall and one in the pool to the south. Each is 15 feet tall and accessible by a ladder. The stands have a short wall around their edge which grants a creature standing on it half cover. The stands have AC 10 and 30 hit points, are vulnerable to fire damage, and can be toppled with a successful Strength (Athletics) check versus DC 15. ***Outcrop.*** On the south-east corner of the cavern are two concentric, raised outcrops of rock. The first is 10 feet high, and the second only 5 feet above that. ***Tunnels.*** There is a tunnel entrance on the higher outcrop which leads to the southern dormitory, and another on the western wall which leads to the lookout point. #### 2. Kennels

This room reeks of animal musk and decay. It contains several crates and barrels of jerkied meat and compost. Hanging from the eastern wall is a set of riding tack in miniature, skilfully crafted but from terrible leather. A heavy wooden door bars passage to the south.

***Worg Tack.*** The saddle and tack is sized for a goblin to ride a worg. An adventurer with relevant knowledge might make that connection with a DC 13 Intelligence (History) or Wisdom (Insight) check. ***Door.*** The door is locked, but a successful check against DC 12 with Thieves' Tools will unlock it. Alternatively, the goblin boss in the northern dormitory has the key. A successful DC 15 Intelligence (Investigation) check will reveal that the door, while made of crude slabs of wood, is utterly flush with the stone around it, as though very carefully made to seal this passage entirely. ``` ``` The party could break it down, if they didn't mind the noist. Once they're through the door, read the following.

The sound of running water is immediately apparent as the seal around the door is broken. This room is large, forty feet deep, containing a babbling little pool fed by a stream which trickles from the wall. Two kennels sit further into the gloom. The eastern one has a crude wooden sign above it carved with the word "GRIZL". The western reads "JEEZ".

***Creatures.*** Grizl is a worg and Jeez is a grey ooze. Grizl is in her kennel when the party enter, and Jeez is hidden on the roof above its kennel. Grizl will immediately growl a warning and trot into Jeez's kennel when she hears the door open. This is an ambush they have practiced before. If somebody approaches Grizl, Jeez will drop behind them and attack. As they reel from that, Grizl will lunge for them as well. *Statistics for Grizl and Jeez can be found on page 28.* ***Tunnel.*** There is a tunnel entrance on the northern wall which leads to the southern dormitory. Sound will travel easily along it. #### 3. Southern Dormitory

This long, narrow room has a faint goblin musk which rises from two rows of fur and straw bedrolls. The walls are adorned with etched and painted symbols and pictures where each resident has made their mark. At the southern end of the room, a wooden partition affords the last few beds some privacy.

***Creatures.*** There are six goblins in this room. If the party enter from the north, and they're alerted to a threat, two will engage them in melee combat and the other four will arrange themselves behind the partition, using it to gain full cover between shortbow shots. If the party enter from the south, all six will move north and take advantage of the partition's bottleneck with their shortbows. If they're not alerted, they will be randomly arranged about the room, chatting idly. ***Treasure.*** The goblins don't have much, but beneath bedrolls and stuffed into pillows around the room a curious party will find 17 cp, 1 sp and a shiv carved from bone. ***Tunnel.*** There is a tunnel entrance on the southern wall which leads to the kennels. Sound will travel easily along it. #### 4. Northern Dormitory

This narrow tunnel is just wide enough for the bedrolls which line its walls. The northern end is marked by a wooden divider, seperating those who sleep beyond from the riff-raff on the southern side. Both walls and parts of the roof are carved and daubed with graffiti, written and drawn.

\page ***Creatures.*** There is a goblin boss and six goblins in this room. If the party enter from the south and they're alerted to a threat, two of the goblins will take up station behind the partition and use the full cover it provides to fire their shortbows from. The two bosses will engage the party in melee combat, with the three other goblins immediately behind them as fodder for the bosses *redirect attack* ability. ***Treasure.*** This is hardly an opulent bedroom, but a quick rummage through the place reveals 20 cp, 4 sp, and an uneaten apple. One of the goblin bosses is carrying an iron key which opens the door to the kennels. ***Tunnel.*** There is a tunnel entrance on the northern wall which leads to the mirror hallway. #### 5. Mess Hall

This room, unlike the others, is quite brightly lit. The light comes from a large cooking fire to the south-east and a smaller campfire to the north-east. Two ten-foot barricades with battlements behind them face the western entrance, around which are three archery targets and two tall training dummies. In the centre of the room is a pool, clear, bright and cold.

***Creatures.*** There are eight goblins and one goblin boss in this room. If alerted to a threat, they'll all take to the battlements or take cover behind them. The boss will stand between the battlements and goad the party into melee combat where they'll be subject to eight shortbows at once. If they're not alerted, the goblins will be around either of the fires eating charred meat, and the boss will be relaxing in the pool. ***Barricades.*** The barricades are ten feet high and provide half cover to a creature standing upon them if the attack comes from the defended side, the west in this case. They have AC 12, 40 hit points and vulnerability to fire damage. ***Treasure.*** There are several freshly cooked cuts of meat and not much else. The area behind the kitchen yields nothing of interest save a single small keg of finely ground cardamom worth 20 gp. ***Tunnels.*** There is a tunnel entrance on the north-east wall which leads to the mirror hallway and the neck, and another on the south-east wall which leads to the prison. ***Ventilation.*** The smoke from both fires is pooling amongst the stalactites on the roof and then being drawn up through a natural vent, barely a handspan across. No light issues from it, suggesting that it must meander on its way to the surface. #### 6. Mirror Hallway

This corridor is long, dark and narrow. It curves so that any light from the mess hall is entirely obscured, and then turns a sharp right. Peeking around this corner you see distant movement in the gloom.

***Mirror.*** At the end of this corridor is a large mirror stolen from somewhere in Rockshade. It is highly polished and artfully propped against the wall in such a way that the tunnel seems to continue on. The first in the marching order must succeed on a DC 20 Wisdom (Perception) check to determine that the movement is their own reflection. If they fail, read the following.

You see an indistinct figure at the other end of the tunnel, peeking around a corner at you. They seem aggressive in their movements.

If they fail by more than 5, read the following instead.

You see the taunting figure of some goblin or their pitiful ilk making rude gestures at you!

The mirror has AC 5 and 1 hit point. It shatters into thousands of tiny pieces if struck, revealing the rock behind it. ***Tunnels.*** There is a tunnel entrance on the western wall which leads to the northern dormitory, and another on the eastern wall which leads to the mess hall and the neck. #### 7. Prison

This is a very well worked room, barely anything of the natural rock formation remains apart from the ceiling. To the western side is a tall, unbroken fence with a rope across its face. To the east, seven wooden cages, four of them locked and occupied. Within, their hands and feet bound and their mouths gagged, are the kidnapped townsfolk. They look imploringly at you as you enter.

***Cages.*** Each cage is locked, requiring a DC 8 check with Thieves' Tools to pick. Alternatively, the goblin boss in this room has the key. ***Corral.*** The western side of the room is fenced off by a corral. The rope across its face keeps the corral standing; if it is broken or let loss, the corral will fall. Vague shuffling as of footsteps and raspy breathing can be heard beyond the corral by any who care to listen. ***Creatures.*** There are four captured townsfolk in the cages, all restrained and silenced. There is one goblin boss near the centre of the room. When the party enters, whether she has been alerted to the threat or not, the goblin boss will flee via the opposite door and trigger the prison trap. There are four zombies behind the corral. The zombies are not freshly raised, so do not follow Greenface's orders. They will attack any living thing left in the room with them. *The statistics for the townsfolk and the zombies can be found on page XXX.* ***Prison Trap.*** There is a trigger rope hidden in the northern entrance to the room and in the tunnel which extends from the southern entrance. Each requires a DC 17 Wisdom (Perception) check to spot. When tugged, this rope causes the corral rope to collapse, releasing the zombies. One round later, a pile of rubble tumbles through the trigger rope holes to block the exits north and south. The rubble requires 1 minute to clear by hand, or half as long with an appropriate tool, such as a shovel or pickaxe. ***Tunnel.*** There is a tunnel entrance at the end of the corridor which extends southward from this room. It leads to the mess hall.

\page #### 8. Study

This is the most regular room you've yet seen, the walls and floor are smooth enough to be called civilised. It's also the brightest, serviced by two braziers which sit on the floor near each entrance. There is a small library to the south, though the shelves are mostly bare save for a few dozen tomes. There are a number of tables to the north, including a large round one which features some surprisingly clear drawings and sketches. Some depict howdah designs, some fortresses and town maps, there are designs for magic circles and quite advanced extrapolations of arcane runes and sigils, especially necromantic ones. There are a few pictures of a dragon skull shaded green on a black background.

***Defense Opal.*** Mounted in the door to the east is a large opal which casts *chromatic orb* with a randomly determined damage type at the closest creature to it when activated. It can only be deactivated from the other side of the door. Greenface uses it to lock her crew out of her personal chambers. The opal has AC 15, 30 hit points, and resistance to non-magical bludgeoning, piercing and slashing damage. If the opal's target is shielded by a mirror, such as the one from the mirror hallway, the attack is reflected and hits the opal instead. ***Treasure.*** This room contains a very good map of Rockshade worth 15 gp, and thirteen books, ten of which are mundane tomes about magical theory. Those of interest are as follows. ***Stolen Spellbook.*** A wizard's spellbook with the following spells copied down: Cantrips: *mage hand, light, ray of frost.* 1st-level: *burning hands, charm person, feather fall, mage armour, magic missile, sleep.* ***Manual of Minor Magicks.*** A tome which can teach an arcane spellcaster the *thaumaturgy* cantrip. ***A Treatise on Trees.*** A tome which can teach a druid the *speak with plants* spell. #### 9. Treasure Hoard

This room is unworked save for the passageways to the north, west and south. Raw stone yawns away from you in a gaping maw with stalagmites for teeth. The distorted hooting and howling of wind can be heard from a hole in the roof, and from across the cave a glimmer catches your eye.

***Treasure.*** A pile on the eastern side of the room contains 2500 cp, 1100 sp, 70 gp, and 7 gems worth 50 gp each; three carnelians, a star rose quartz, a chalcedony, a zircon and a citrine. Any time that the party spend here, gathering loot, is time that Greenface and her surviving crew have to plot and plan. ***Ventilation.*** The hole in the roof is nearly five feet across and quite near the centre of the room. A wavering breeze and an accompanying howl emits from it, providing fresh air to the cavern. It emits no light, but is obviously connected to the surface somehow. #### 10. Tranquil Pool

The gentle lap of water on a slick, rocky shore greets your ears as you enter. The pool is so clean and pure that it would be utterly invisible if not for the reflections that you cast. The door you've just passed through was unlocked, but there is a sturdy latch on this side. If you chose, you could lock the rest of the world out.

There is nothing in here save the pool. Greenface comes here to think and bathe, and lets her lieutenants do the same. It is an ideal place for a short rest if the party want to run the risk of giving Greenface and her crew an hour to themselves. #### 11. Neck

This tight little room precedes a sturdy wooden door at its other end. It is devoid of decoration. You can only guess at its purpose.

***Creatures.*** There are three goblins behind the arrow slits in this room. If they can shout for reinforcements, more goblins from other rooms will fill the remaining spaces as quickly as they can. ***Arrow Slits.*** There are six arrow slits in the walls, three on each side, allowing goblins to easily fire into the room without being easily fired upon. They are an inch wide on this side and are at head height for most humanoids. They require a successful DC 13 Wisdom (Perception) check to spot, but their location is given away the moment any one of them is fired through. ***Tunnels.*** The arrow slits are accessible only by a tunnel which forks to the mess hall and the mirror hallway. Part of this tunnel ducks beneath the southern entrance of this room; the floor there is only about six inches thick.

\page #### 12. Sanctum

The door creaks open to reveal a circular, sparsely decorated room. A chest on one side, a single bookshelf and a desk on the other, one brazier and a burbling pool of water. The only concession to grandeur is the large bed directly opposite the door, which would comfortably fit two humans, much less a single goblin. Hovering in the centre of the room, borne aloft by crackling green fire, is Greenface herself. She's short, even for a goblin, and wearing patchwork leather armour beset with small bones and

***Creatures.*** Greenface is in this room. The moment she hears fighting in the neck she will cast *fly* on herself and then ready an action. The action is to cast *eldritch blast* and the trigger is seeing a hostile creature. Once that action has been triggered, Greenface will weigh her options. If she thinks she can beat the party alone she'll cast *darkness* to cover as many of them as she can. She will then use *eldritch blast* to damage targets and *toll the dead* to finish them off, flying out of the room and into the treasure hoard chamber if need be. If there are any goblins alive she'll fly through the dungeon to regroup with them and formulate a plan. If Whompo is alive, she'll fly to his cavern and take cover in his howdah. If Greenface can see she's about to be beaten, she'll flee. She can fly at her full speed along any of the tunnels, and she can exit via the front door, the lookout tunnel, or the ventilation shaft in the roof of the treasure hoard. *Greenface's statistics can be found on page 29.* ***Treasure.*** Greenface has precious few belongings. The chest in her room contains a set of traveller's clothes, a sketchbook full of skulls, writing and drawing materials, 15 gp and 5 pp. There is also a set of Leatherworker's Tools on the desk. ### Lethal Victory If Greenface is killed, any surviving goblins will exit the lair as quickly as possible and scatter into the wood. Whompo won't go anywhere, he likes his cave. The party are free to head back to town and claim their rewards. Take note of what they do with Greenface's corpse; her patron will raise her as per the *raise dead* spell the next time night falls. She will flee at once, flying as soon as she is able. Whether the party check on her body or one of the townsfolk does, its mysterious absence is a chilling note to end the adventure on. ``` ``` ### Non-Lethal Victory If Greenface flees, she flees for good. This area has proven unsafe and she'll get as far away from it as she can. Remember that *fly* lasts for an ten minutes, which will likely allow her to get at least two miles away if one considers that she can take the Dash action every round. A faint green spark hurtling away over the wood will surely fill onlooking adventurers with mingled statisfaction and frustration. Once Greenface goes to ground she'll be impossible to find; because she literally goes to ground. *Meld into stone* allows her to hide perfectly in any rocky surface, even resting for the night in such a place. Whatever becomes of her, she will never return to Rockshade. If Greenface is captured, she will bide her time patiently, but she will never stop trying to escape. *Meld into stone* and her other powers make this a ready possibility. An empty prison cell and a flicker of green fire is a haunting end to the adventure. ### Failure If the party are overcome, all is not lost. Depending on your style of play, there are options for the recovery of the story. ***Death.*** If you prefer that dead characters remain dead, so be it, and the adventure can end there. Add whatever epilogue you feel appropriate based upon their progress up until this point; Greenface might not have the reinforcements she needs to carry on, departing with whoever's left. Or, she might move openly against the town and raze it to the ground in search of magic-users. The choice is yours. ***Captivity.*** One option for recovery is to have the injured players come to in the prison. They can be considered to have had a short rest, and can begin to plot their escape... and their vengeance! ***Rescue.*** If the party endeared themselves particularly to any NPC in Rockshade, reinforcements might arrive in the nick of time to rouse them. The Town Watch could storm the lair, or Gell Harathorn could sneak in to render aid.

\page # Appendix B: Monsters ## Rockshade In theory you shouldn't have to prepare any combat encounters involving the people of Rockshade, but just in case, here are some guidelines. Also included are statistics for Captain DonFarben, who the party may have to answer to. Begin with the commoner statistics. If you have the time and the inclination, apply any racial bonuses you see fit. Rockshade is primarily inhabited by humans, with a decent amount of elves and dwarves, and at least ten examples of the other races in the *Player's Handbook*. For professionals, use the commoner statistics but increase any two of their ability scores by 2 and grant them proficiency in and three skills or tools you deem appropriate. For magic users, use the commoner statistics but increase their spellcasting ability score by 3, one other score by 2, and grant them proficiency in any four skills you deem appropriate.
