## To DMs This adventure is meant to inspire a setting for running your campaign. Any map might be used, and everything can be switched out if you so desire. Therefore, no plot points will be revealed in this module, you have to make them for yourself. There will be no sequence of happenings or planned episodes. However, due to the underlying nature of the conflict, there are characters who would fit as both good or bad guys, or somewhere in between. Some characters are meant to fit a certain role, while others can be used as you see fit in your campaign, and can even be used as PCs. I imagine dark fantasy when running this setting; it is meant to be kind of hopeless, and not strictly good versus evil. There is however no way of telling how your characters solve problems, talk to NPCs or interact with each other. But rest assure; they are impacted by the calamity in someway of another.

## To players Playing this module only requires your imagination. However, an insight in the background might help for immersion. I recommend you stop reading the module after you`ve read "Your Story". Things might be spoiled, but then again, you should be able to seperate what you as a player knows, and what your character knows.

## Hail Tarrasque, heir of the world!

\page # Introduction Fifty years after the calamity. ***Tarrasque*** awoke and destoyed half the country of **Tal `Dorei**. In the years that followed, cults and religious powers have outcompeted the former national religions. Churchs encourage martyrdom should the monster ever reappear, as this is the road to salvation. In the mean time, the rest of the country gets neglected. Farmers and the common man are dissatisifed with the new way the country is ruled. A rebellion is in the making against the rigid, religious, absolutism that has been buiding the last fifty years. Also; a desire to reinstate the monarchy as opposed to the priesthood that has taken over the capital of **Tarra** (previously **Emon**).

For those who experienced the calamity, fear still resonates, and they tell of the horrors the roamed the country. Even the most powerful heroes fell in battle, which does not help the courage of the population. The hierarchy has not only affected the common people, as several mighty families har aquired large riches in awake of surviving the calamity. The large cities are festered with slum, diseases, and the infrastructure is badly maintained. Corruption is everyday life, and the justice system switched out in favor of religious texts; priests nurturing on peoples misery and superstition.

``` ``` The occult has festerd people in powerful positions. Whispers of comsic energy is said to awake ***Tarrasque*** once again. Warlocks claim knowledge of the creature, while necromancers desperately tries to find a way to revive the beast. Althoug it is said that it cannot really die, and it only went into a deep sleep. But who would benefit from antoher calamity? Needless to say, the patrons of ***Tarrasque*** are not exactly few and far between. As a result of tremendous fear, most people have lost faith that anything should improve. The old gods are kept by the minority of the population, as everything from the old days is censured by the priests of **Tarra**. And even if thing could improve, who is to say that ***Tarrasque*** will not wake again?

Others also know how to exploit the weak. Bandits and outlaws roams the countryside, and doesnt bother too much with the larger cities. What`s left of the army consists of mercenaries hunting for own riches, and a corrupt city guard. The few cities which stills keep their old faith, are mostly self-sufficient with food and a somewhat reliable milita. Persecution of laymen, and threats of torture and threats of supernatural magic is enough to convert most people to the new religion. It seems like the country is living on orrowed time.

\page # Background The ancient truth. The world scourge. Death itself. The left behind god. Once in a milennium, ***Tarrasque*** awakes and destroys everything in its path. Whole cities are swalloved whole and countries are left desolate. The stories sorrounding Tarrasque are as plentiful as the rumours. In the land of **Tal`Dorei**, an awakening just like this happened. Deep within **Stormcrest Mountains**, what started as an earthquake, followed by a sound louder than anything before it. Lastly; a figure taller than the mountains arose.

4 powerful heroes, from each of the country´s corners rode out to fight. First, fell *Ohlbas*, the storm giant of the east. His skelleton can still be seen in the mountain side of **Summit Peaks** with his own sword *Hailbringer* through his enormous body. After this fell *Sumray the Quiet*, a copper dragon from the north, impaled on the tops of **Cliffkeep Mountains**. Its rider, *Orthelia the Everbard* followed with her. It is said that the reverberation of her seong can be heard in the mountains on quiet nights. Her grave was built by the once joyfull people of the south; close to her home of **Syngorn**. Lastly, the priest *Matrydal Vallamin*, Hope of the West, fell in a flash of divine light. With the heroes, their heritage, hope and artifacts. *Sumrays Reddest Jewel* and *Ortelias Flute* were never found, or maybe found and sold by bandits. *Ohlbas*` sword is still impaled in his body, to huge to be moved. And the priest; the priest was never seen again. Neither was his *Staff of Wishing*.

***Tarrasque***, however, never fell, but wandered south again to sleep. On his way, **Kraghammer**, **Kymal** and **Wrettis** were destroyed. His footprints can still be seen as craters and ponds across the countryside, and his claws left gashes in the mountainside, or even shredding them to pieces.

They all fell in battle. Not just the heroes, but also most of the population. The army reduced to dust, the royal family wiped out just like most of the country east of the capital of **Emon**. The borders to the country closed down, at the command of neighbouring countries. This makes the country self sufficient, although this is not always enough to feed everybody. The capital is run by a hierarchy between the most powerful families. *Giantforgers*, a dwarf family from **Kraghammer** who immigrated to **Emon** after the calamity. *Stormstanders*, a new human family who changed their name after the catastrophy (but not least, survived it). And the *Maddocks*, the oldest and perhaps most influential family. A Patriarchy led by the allfather *Drystan Maddock*. Finally, there is the priesthood, those who follow the way of ***Tarrasque***. Led by the high priest, *Malon Grepetar*, with their seat in the **Grand Cathedral of Tarra**. > ##### *Have you ever seen a mountain move* > ##### *Or felt the tears in a womb* > ##### *Barren at last, clung to the past* > - *Old World saying* In the east, everything moves slowly. the militia had small beginnings, but has grown in size. Elves, free riders and farmers are drawn here, banished. Some willingly join the resistance, and others just try to survive. Attempts at alliances have been made with the last of the free cities; **Stilben**, **Jorenn** and **Wrettis**. Other cities are in the borderlands of the old and new, like **Westruun**, a former intersection for trade across the country. In the militia capital of **Drynna**, local heroes make attempts to survive and to reinstate the monarchy at the cost of being persecuted by priests and fanatics. Led by the son of a former war hero, they are in clear opposition to the east and the priesthood of **Emon**. Those who are passing thorugh, are given the choice of joining. However, it is not easy to determine their true intentions.

\page # Lore In ancient times , nothing was certain. After the calamity, it seems some things are still this way. A lot of historcial evidence got destoyed along with the larger cities, and people are relient of folk tales and stories to pass on information. Those who experienced it first hand usually keep quiet, and the remains of the library of *Emon* has been burned on purpose by the priests. Traditionally being a kingdom based on feudalism, honest farmers served a lord who claimed taxes on behalf of the king. A lot of this system still remains today, although more loosely organized after the replacement of royalty in favors of priests. Tiers of social classes; farmers, criminals, politcians and nobles already existed, but catastrophes does not favor the poor. The uspide, however, of being in disarray, is that neighbouring countries of Wildemount and Rifenmist have a lost their usual intrest of exploiting. After a year of rough trade politics, **Tal `Dorei** had an upswing in crops and economy after a rainy summer the following year. All was going pretty well apart from the usual outlaws and raiders before everything changed. ## Magic Known as a natural phenomenon, although few know how to use it. Commoners might call you a priest instead of warlock just for the lack of knowledge of the deities. Others might try to recruit you to serve as a bodyguard to protect the priests of ***Tarrasque***. Others again might just fear you in reminiscence of the destruction, claiming you serve the apocalypse. Needless to say, spellcasters are a bit more subtle when it comes to the public. The less subtle knows how to sell their gift for a fair price. Even clerics are known to switch gods at will without the fear of retribution. Paladins are known to break their oaths to bring retribution to those who does not believe. Who would have thought that magic could so easily corrupt and sellable? ``` ```

## Gods Usually confiding in the *Gods of Old*, religion was just about the most common thing you could encounter. The royal family even stated that you are not truly fee unless you can pursue your own faith. Now, the tables have turned. What used to be liberal is now illegal, and if you do not believe in the coming of ***Tarrasque***, you will be prosecuted. A thourough selection of people by the Priesthood takes place twice a year, known as *The Appointing*. Here, all hopeful and carefully selected squires of ***Tarrasque*** are granted their robes and are ready to serve a lifetime as priests, missionaries, or even martyrs.

For those yet to be touched by the words of *The New World*; many keep the old faith, while others have lost faith. Some farmers still pray to *Pelor* for good crops, and the Dwarves not confided to the capital see to *Moradin* for guidance. Elves are known to worship gods not known to outsiders, but who would not want a god of their own to rely on? A new order of halflings have turned to *Melora* to secure food for their children, and safe travels for those who trade by sea. Not sure what she could bring, but certain that its better than the alternative of the capital.

The rogue brotherhood of *Aire Fumè* has been known to worship the spider *Lolth*, although they swear fealty to whomever has the highest bid. Other parties claim to restore order by serving *The Raven Queen*, launching their own crusades under the dark of night. The elves of **Parchwood** are accused of demon worshipping, and swearing fealty to *The Prince of Demons, Demogorgon,* or whatelse might exist through their portals to other realms. Some deities are outright outlawed long before the Priesthood arrived; and partly explains the alienation of the drows and duergar. ``` ```

\page ## Heirs of Dawn

The *Heroes of the Calamity* each used an ancient artifact against ***Tarrasque***, known as an *Heir of Dawn*. In vain, but powerful nonetheless. All these items were lost along with the death of the heroes. No one know where they are, or exactly how they came into existence.

Each of the artifacts are said to have been blessed by the dieties of their wielders. Claimed to have been lesser deities in their own rights, some of the heroes were common folk with their own interests. To think that a great storm giant would help the helpless spawns tales of grandeur. Those trying to replicate the artifacts are said to have gone mad with obsession, for ever wandering the planes of **Pandemonium** at the will of *Fraz-Urb`luu*. Some claim to have found an artifact, but would this person not be mad like the other fanatics? The Priests have promised great rewards for anyone who finds and artifact, but they mosly receive copies created by warlocks swearing feilty to the nine hells. There is not one prophecy, as the story of the artifacts change with the winds.

``` ``` - ***Ortelia*** was one of the last of the royal line of **Syngorn**. As the high elves and others wandered south after an omen proclaimed by the elders of their tribe who followed the ways of *Sehanine*. *Ortelia* stayed to keep order, and to answer the call from the capital if need be. With her long time compratiot, *Sumray*, she rode out when ***Tarrasque*** apporached the dragons home in the north. With her flute it is said she could put anything into a dreamless sleep for etnerity. - ***Sumray the Quiet*** rarely spoke, and did not have time to scream when slain by ***Tarrasque***. With her new found love of the people of **Syngorn**, and her home in the mountains to the north, she chose to help in the battle. With her rider, *Ortelia*, they flew when news arrived that **Kraghammer** was already destroyed . Her *Reddest Jewel* dropped from her armor when impaled on the mountains, leaving a shimmer that lasted thorugh the night, and many of the nights that followed. This is said to be the shimmer of *Bahamut*, the last platinum dragon. - ***Matrydal Vallamin*** had not yet achieved his rank as a priest of *Ioun*, although he had studied for years. Yearning to prove his worth, he brought the artifact of his order - *The Staff of Wishing*. Not sure himself what to do, he was last seen in a flash of divine light facing the ***Tarrasque*** all by himself at the gates of **Emon**. After this, the first silence in days followed as ***Tarrasque*** stopped his rampage before returning to the south for another decades of sleep. - ***Ohlbas*** was the largest cloudgiant of his clan, and a skilled warrior. Although the clan mostly kept to themselves, his inner fire was awokened when The Giantsleeper *Henon Rinn* sacrificed himself at the shores of **Stilben** while chanting the blessing of *Moradin*. Bringing with him a storm of a lifteime, he charged against ***Tarrasque*** and mangaged to strike it in the chest with the greatsword *Hailbringer*, leaving a scar that did not heal. Proving futile in the end, the storm ended along with *Ohlbas*`s last breath as he was laid to rest againtst the mountainside. The winds slowly subsiding into a calm breeze.

\page # Races ### Common races

- #### Dwarves Dwarves were few to begin with, often secluded to the mountains of **Stromcrest** and **Cliffkeep**, and many of them survived deep in their underground homes. **Kraghammer**, however, was not so fortunate, even though some managed to escape when others went to war. - #### Elves Previously a proud and untouched people of the deep forests, elves are more spread and shyer than they used to be. The high elves of **Syngorn** has become isolated in later years, and the woodelves of **Torian Forest** are hostile towards others. It is also said that the elves of **Parchwood** communes with the outer planes as horizon walkers. - #### Gnomes One of few races that choose to go west, as they search for riches. Most gnomes rarily have one home, mostly relying on trade and caravans and a life on the road. The gnome village of **Jorenn** was untouched by ***Tarrasque***, but still people are emmigrating. - #### Halflings The ever stout and forthcoming people still keeps to the old world, and also keeps their old ways despite of everything happening. Pretty naive and easily influenced, but also patriotic. After their town of **Wrettis** was destroyed, most live at **Stilben** and in **Drynna**. - #### Humans The most common people of **Tal`Dorei**, and might just as well be farmers as nomads, bandits or politicans. Some claim to be descendant of the late royal family, and some come on ships from the south capital of **Tz`arrm** or neighbouring countries to trade. - #### Kenku Said to have made a divine pact with a god of old, claiming their wings and ability to speak. the priests of **Emon** saw this as an oppurtunity, recruting the clan of *Kenku*. Therefore, this bird people is seen quite often throughout the new world. Unable to speak, they rely on sounds to communicate, although they often refuse to respond to those they do not trust. Seemingly simple in appearance, a kenku knows both how to kill quick as well as intimidate.

##### Deep gnome, Duergar, Githyanki, Genasi, Aasimar, Tabaxi, Lizardfolk, Warforged, Changeling, Triton, Firbolg, Goblin, Bugbear, Hobgoblin, Eldarin and Tieflings Can be used at the DMs discretion

``` ``` ### Uncommon races

- #### Dragonborn If you are lucky (or unlucky), you were born a dragonborn of **Lyrengorn**, and most likely you were white as snow as your ancestors. It is said that they know the location of the mystified city of **Draconia**. Although, no one has seen a dragonborn for years, and many blame them for the calamity although they have no proof. - #### Drow Since the Dawn War, all drows have been banished from the public, making the seemingly fewer in numbers. The last known location of any society is found in **Torian Forest** after they were driven out of **Cliffkeep** by Duergars. - #### Goliaths Everyone knows of the goliath society of **Terrah**, and everyone knows not to go there. Unless you want your head smashed by a semi giant goliath, you know to stay out of their way. Largely self sufficient, and a strong sense of family, keep the goliaths in the mountains, but its impossible to know if they suddenly go on a raid. - #### Half-elves Mostly found in the borders of elven country, many half-elves are found in **Emon** and especially **Kymal** (which operates as a politcal centre for trade and law enforcment). Here, their charimastic abilites comes to good use. Some are also known to be involved in more shady businesses that rely on deceiving people, and posing as someone else. - #### Half-orcs The true orcs were defeated in **Kraghammer** more than a millenia ago, and a more recent alliance between duergar and half-orc hybrids were almost in effect until **Kraghammer** fell into ruin along with their plans of retaking it. These types of half-orcs still skirmish for control of the ruined dwarven city. In the wider world half-orcs often function as body guards or more often as outcasts from the rest of the civilized world.

\page # Your Story What follows are options for the background of your character depending on where in the world your storty might start. Take this into consideration when making a character, and think of how it might have impacted you. ### The Old World A small beginning in a village outside of **Drynna**, simply known as **Drynnen**. This is the **Old World**, not because it is older than the rest of the country, but because they still keep the old gods. Sporadic villages, caravans and temporary settlements is still normal, as only the big cities were built uo from the ground. Things move slowly, and a population more than halved by the calamity does not help. Where some talk of armed revolution, others anxiosuly awaits the spring flood and the long winter. Some conspire against the priests, others work the fields from dusk til dawn. It is risky having any children, as no one knows when there might be a famine. The state of **Drynnen** reflects this life in the old world. A humble village with few buildings and several outriders. We are at *The Drunken Mare*, the only tavern in **Drynnen**. The yearly harvest has just ended, and all the locals gather to celebrate. And tonight, a special guest is arriving... ### The New World Tense breathing hangs in the air, as the first of the chosen ones steps into the main cathedral of **Emon**. The cloaked figures seem intimidating, however, they are just like you; young (or old), blessed and anxious. Is the ceremony really want you want? Murmurs start as one of the figures step out of line and heads away from the cathedral, his forearms filled with bruises. All the richness in the world could not prepare you for such a moment. Is not to embrace ***Tarrasque*** what youve always been told to do? You have felt the salty smell of the burnmarks so many times, one would have thought you were prepared by now. But still... ### The Borderlands - *"Fanatics! Why dont they all go back to **Emon**? "* You`ve gotten quite used to him spurting out whatever came to mind. You, however, had learned the act of being discrete when in public. And **Westruun** is quite public these days. Some see the conflict as an omen, others as an oppurtunity; business, trade, or even trickery. Its funny how easily distracted the immigrants are, being used to the safety of a well armed city watch. However, the dwarf arriving this morning seems somewhat extraordinary. Should i try to pickpocket him, or maybe its more value in just talking? ``` ``` - *"What do you mean *no taxes*?"*, her frustration was not so subtle when in private. *"You heard right, my lady. I just arrived from the crossroads, and it seemed the others had the same problem. I dont know how to do it if they all refuse.* You kind of knew her answer already; no knights, no guards and no answer from **Tarra**. *"Can you tell me how I am supposed to run this city? I almost long for a royal family, just so someone can ask people nicely for a change.* She sat back down, folding her hands in a thinking kind of way. *Does this mean Im out of a job?"*, I asked. She took a pause. *"No. It means you have a new one"*. ### Implications Not many stories remain from before the calamity, either lost in the destruction, og censored by the Priesthood. Everyone knows a conflict is imminent, but most are also aware that this might take some time. The milita is not nearly big enough, and the Priesthood has not expanded further than **Westruun**. The priests have much more resources, but they dont know the country as well as the politicians and local farmers and patriots. ### Character Background - Where are you from? - Are you old enough to remember the calamity? - Have you emmigrated, or have you always lived in the old or the new world, or somewhere in between? - Do you take part in the conflict between the priests and the resitance? - Do you keep the old gods, or do you follow ***Tarrasque***? - Why are you were you are at tonight?

### Aire Fumè Everyone and no one knows about *Aire Fumè*. This secret assasination organisation is definetely for hire, but not for everyone as the price is steep. Characterized by their yellow eyes and sleek demeanor, they have been known to cooperate with the capital in order to secure the heritage of the **New World**, and expand it to the east. ### Bloodhunters of White Stone If you have ever met a witch, werewolf or other abominations, you would have wished for the help of a bloodhunter. Mostly keeping secretive, the outside world does not concern them (unless its run by vampires). Also, anyone visiting Whitestone are never able to find neither them nor their supposed manor of **Whiteseat**. Rumours tell of monstrous bears, as well as other werekin approaching after the sun has set offering help against abominations. ### Clan of Kenku Most likely, the kenku struck a bad deal with powerful people of **Emon**, and in an attempt to redeem themself, they pledged an alligeance which is basically slavery. The elders of the clan still reside in their ancient home of **Daggerbay Mountains**, constricted by the laws of the *New World*', there is little they can do to adjust the agreement made with the capital. ### Council of Syngorn Remaning in a stauts quo the last years, few have heard from the elves of **Syngorn** regarding anything that might have occured in the forest. Some claim they lost faith after *Ortelia`s* failing, or maybe they just want to protect themselves from the cruelty of the world around them. Lastly, the capital regard them as a threat for not responding to their messengers, so they cannot stay hidden for long. ### Nero Insigma If your time has come, but you cheat death by some means, you might one day wake up with a black sigil in your hand. Now, you have a day to settle your businesses before it is time to go. Voluntarily or not, it does not matter; they will claim you. Or so the rumours say. Some say these enigmatic protectors of the cycle of death do not exist at all, though no one has lived to tell the tale.

##### Order of the Hammer The few survivors from **Kraghammer** has managed to make a living in the capital under the protection and learning of the family *Giantforgers*. The rest roam the country as freelances, masons, smiths or craftsmen. A proud sense of home still carries with them along with the sorrow of everyone lost. When **Kraghammer** still stood, *the Order* consisted of several families; *Stormshields*, *Blackforgers*, *Stonewise*, *Tallaxe* and *Giantforgers* (being the only known survivors). The order naturally fell apart, and little is known about their previous work and secrets. However, the family *Giantforgers* is working to restore the order, and uncover its learnings.

### Soulstormers A boy or girl might discover they have somewhat unusual powers. A wizards spire might be sent to a college of such, but a *Mystics* powers are quite something else. Mote often than not unaware of their abilities, they might suddenly induce raging headaches in those who annoy them, only to be followed by accusations of devilry. Some, however, chose to embrace this gift and recruit the children into the order of **Soulstormers**.

### The Colleagues This collection of traders and merchants exist to protect each other. Having a base in each of the major port cities, you can always count on resonable prices as long as *The Colleagues* are involved. Where other exploit the business of war, someone makes sure that everyone gets paid for honest work. Recently they have embraced the beleives of *Melora*, much to the dislike of the priests of **Tarra**. ### The Milita Small beginnings, and still small, but the milita relies on local patriots and strong hearts to resist the influence of the west. Most being farmers at day, little time is left for training or effort to spread to the nearby cities. A want to reinstate the monarchy as well as sovereignty over ones life and land has led the milita to be reckless, but it seems they have no choice if they want to change their future. Their leader, *Thedrith*, are likely to recruit anyone who seems honest enough to aid their cause. ### The Old The proficies of *The Old* only consisted as a nursery rhyme until recently. Their legacy noted down and kept in the library of **Emon**, eventually burned down by the Priesthood. It lost most of its value exept the copies kept in the house of a certain *Umbean* who has made it a goal for himself and his few reamining allies to restore the history of *Tal `Dorei* to its former self. ### The Priesthood of Tarra Only existing for the past 40 years, the priests of **Tarra** have quickly converted a number of the population to believe in the inevitable doom. Much remains unknown about about them, and last but not least; their true intentions with ***Tarrasque***. Nevertheless, having convinced so many people and claiming the capital, money is noe problem. With both the poor and the wealthy on their side, they launch crusades across the country and hire mercenaries to protect them. Seated in **The Grand Cathedral of Emon**, their leader *Malon Grepetar* hold his daily sermon at sundown. ### The Quiet An order existring since the dawn time, little is known, other than that they belong to **Westruun** and the obvious ties to *Sumray the Quiet*. Who knows were their loyalty lie if anywhere, although nobody seems to have bought them yet. A platinum dragon is said to represent their honest work, although their work is largely in the shadows of the ongoing politics in the city they reside.

### Adrik Niro The local trader and merchant of **Drynna**, and a loyal servant of the *Milita* and its leader. Likely to help our heroes if they know the secret password of the *Militia*. In the basement of his shop, he hosts secret meetings with the rebellion after sunset. ### Allren Nimblefoot A local priest of **Drynna**, being in family with the local halflings who emigrated here a long time ago. She has recently disvorered the passion of *The Wildmother*, and is kind of shy letting anyone know. Maybe a wandering priest might peak her interest enough? ### Ana *Ana* might see like a human, but only she hides her half-elvish ears well under her long brown hair. She runs *The Ill Fainted Wolf*, a nice tavern in **Drynna** with a horribly bad name. Her previous runnings with the elves of **Parchwood** makes her capable of communicating with the **Feywild**, and she possesses an *Amulet of the Planes*. ### Brand Katyra A local patriot of *The Milita*, and its current leader. Although he usually uses the name *"Thedrith"*, he is a common farmer during the day to avert suspicion. At night time he arranges meeting in the cellar of *Adrik Niro* and his shop. He would likey try to recruit any able bodied people stubmling into **Drynna**. ### Brènon Rinn Son of *Hènon*, now an old man, he functioned as a political message from the east after the calamity in order to negotiate with the newly founded priesthood. Not being especially fond of his work, he saw it more as a burden and a punishment for letting his father down. Anyways, he disappeared a few years back leaving *Brand* as the new leader of *the Militia*. ### Burny Fleetmoss The gnome innkepper of *The Calm Fish* in **Turst Fields**, and like most gnomes quite fond of money. The inn goes alright, even though not many people passing through, so *Burny* is likely to strike up a conversation, and being helpful if the price is right. ### Daragrim Forgeheart A proud and honest dwarf of what used to be **Kraghammer**, *Daragrim* wanders the world in search of the artifacts of old. This is not entirely out of free will, as his close compatriot and superior, *Doravrem Giantforger*, entrusts this mission only to him. Having lost his love in the war, he immerses himself in smithing and devotion to his god, *Moradin*, in order to redeem himself of the guilt he feels for letting her down. ``` ``` ### Doravrem Giantforger The leader of the clan of *Giantforgers* who reside in **Emon**. Having ezcaped with his life, a daughter, and a pregnant wife, he chose to carry on the proud traditions of his family by being a craftsman in **Emon**. Politics soon caught up with him, and his work these days is more talking than work. He has however taken an interest in the secrets of Kraghammer and the *Heirs of Dawn* chosing to send his trusted ally *Daragrim* on an expedtion to look for clues. ### Doravrim Giantforger The son of *Doravrem*, born in the capital after their escape. Having lost his mother in child birth, he never quite found his way, or understood the family bussiness. Naive in mind, but angry at heart. Both at the priests, but his father ansd sister as well. ### Drystan Maddock *The Allfather*, and patriarch to the family of *Maddocks*. Having ties back to the old days, the *Maddocks* controlled most of the trade of the *Ozmit Sea*, and has since benefited from enormous wealth. *Drystan*`s agenda is however everything but trade as he is deeply involved in the priesthood of **Tarra** and desires to awake ***Tarrasque*** himsef. ### Erdan Seth The only known contact of *the Miltia* in **Westruun**, or at the least the only one they can afford to pay to cooperate. *Erdan* has a lot going on, juggling his status as a political spy as well as a runner for *Lord Eberhard Greenmaw*. ### Girod Wayfair The leader of *The Quiet*, a paladin of *Sumray*, Having an agenda of his own. His order fight to restore the ancient laws of their country, and wishes to reinstate a king from an old family line long thought have gone extinct. *Girod* does not trust anybody except those with the right family name, having been badly betrayed in the past. ### Grindoll Kali Lord of **Turst Fields**, although rarely seen in the area. He lives in the local manor, overseen by his secretary, *Julia*, who has gotten pretty good at making excuses for his absent. His true wereabouts are likely at the faboulus parties of **Westruun**. ### Hagley The ever happy, and mostly drunk, innkepper of the **Drunken Mare** in the village of **Drynnen**. Likely to but you a beer without even asking, and especially during the harvest festival of late summer. His drinking is a way of coping with the loss of his wife to cackle fever, and his son, *Trast*, leaving to join the Militia in **Drynna**. A helping hand might even make him reveal the secret passowrd of *The Milita*.

\page ### Hènon Giantsleeper Previously known as *Hènon Rinn*, this name befell to him after he awoken *Ohlbas* at the shores of **Stilben**. He vanished in the process, passing into legend for the commom folk of the east, and leaving the burden of fame to his son, *Brènon*. ### Itcher A kenku, and follower of *Sir Brycen* and *Lichen Hansèl*, sent with them from the capital as a bodyguard and disposable asset if need be. *Itcher* was raised within boundaries of the capital after the calamity, and does not know a life outside slavery, although he would very much like one. If presented with a chance, maybe he would change his alignment? ### Jürg von Zich One of *The Bloodhunters* of **Whitestone**, *Jürg* wandered south in search of witches and other abominations. He always has a story to tell of a witches lair and how horrible it was decorated. Being a bloodhunter, he also has a side of himself ha cannot always control. At will he transforms into a ferocious werebear, at nights with full moon, he cannot contain his powers. ### Lichen Hansèl A lieutenant of *Aire Fumè*, cold and calculating and not overly fond of his hopefully non permanent companion of *Sir Brycen*. Eyes coloured yellow as a result of some sort of initiation into the organisation, and skin pale and frail. Most of all though, *Lichen* wants to claim the artifacts of the heroes who fell to ***Tarrasque*** with the help of his true god, *Lolth*. ``` ``` ### Lord Eberhard Greenmaw The lord and ruler of **Westruun**, easily influenced, and not very fond of conflicts. This suits his bad as **Westruun** is infested with cult fanatics as well as being a desired target of *The Militia*. Everyone tries to convince the lord, but he justs want to have a good time as a noble. ### Ludwig Rottentoe No one truly earned their name as *Ludwig*. Being a delusional hoarder gnome, he lives in a shed surrounded by pretty obvious traps consisting of dead squirrels. In his shed, his skull collection on one wall, and his toe collection on another, includes his own toe. A sort of expert on giants, but only if he gets one of their toes as reward. ### Malon Grepetar The high priest of **Tarra**. Not one of his original followers, but one of those who first realized the amount of powers that could follow by being devoted. Strong in his faith, but corrupt. Friendly and forthcoming, but everything but naive. He holds his daily sermon at sundown at the steps of the **Grand Cathedral of Tarra** sprouting his wisdom and the inevitable awake of ***Tarrasque***. ### Nimreth Gelodon Closely tied to the forest of **Parchwood**, and his mentor *Siegfriede*, they often wandered far together often venturing to the **Feywild**. Here, *Nimreth* would admire the twilit gloom and plants for hours. One day, however, *Siegfriede* disappeared in a huge portal as *Nimreth* stalked her through the woods. Out of the portal, demons came from the abyss itself, destroying his home. After months of seclusion in the **Feywild**, *Nimreth* returned home to no avail, and decided to venture south in search of answers. ### Nundealin Giantforger The heir to *Doravrem*, and his oldest child. *Nundealin* does not remember much of **Kraghammer**, but she remembers enough to want it back the way it was, derievd of calamities, orcs and goblins. ### Regina Katyra Mother of *Brand Katyra*, and quite fierce for her age. Having lived in **Turst Fields** for much of her life, she knows a lot of the passing of different people on the way to **Drynna**. Quite valuable for the *Militia*, as she is the least likely person someone would expect working for the rebellion. ### Ruhri Stormshield The brother of *Daragrim`s* long lost lover, *Morlen*, who along with his sister vanished in the war. However; *Ruhri* did not die, and has been somewhat recruited by *Aire Fumè* with the promises of resurrecting his sister. Being conflicted by his sorrow, he desperately searchs for a way to bring her back through whatever menas necesary.

\page ### Sir Brycen Twynam A newly anointed knight of **Tarra**, *Sir Brycen* visits the old world in search for the leader of *The Militia*. Arrogant, but capable with a sword, *Sir Brycen* is everything but subtle as he stumbles into the **Drunken Mare** on the night of the harvest festival. ### Stormstanders This newly founed family in **Tarra** is more of a union than an actual family. Halv-elves, dwarves, humans and the like who has their own politcal agenda. Consisting of anyone, it is hard to tell when the *Stormstanders* might be involved, and what their goals consist of, namely that of claiming **Emon** for themselves and starting a new royal family. ### Thedrith Naroian This name befalls the current leader of *The Militia*, meant to be a diversion to anyone with bad intentions. ### Trast Eldair The only son of *Hagley*, a young slighlty overweight lad of 17 who left everything to join the rebellion. Always stribing to prove himself, it doesnt always work out inspite of his good intentions. Despite of his naive world view, he has experienced conflict up close and is a pretty descent tracker. ### Umbean Had anyone known about *Umbean*`s Hat of disguise, odds are he would not be as famous. Secretely collecting history to restore the library in **Emon** on behalf of *"The Old"*, he roams the country never appearing the same way twice. ### Valdr Hecilo *Valdr* was handed the worst of cards, being orphaned at eight from his human mother and elven father, he was forced to make a living on the streets of **Emon**. Faith would have it, that one day after stealing a valuable ring from the family of *Giantforgers*, an assasin of *Aire Fumè*, *Beon*, was sent after the orphan. However, *Beons* kind heart got the better of him, and he chose to adopt *Valdr* as his own, teaching everything he knew of the rogue life. Time eventually caught up with them, and *Beon* was terminated by another assassin. Now orphaned again, *Valdr* had only revenge left. ### Wilward Silversharper When your mother tongue is thieves cant, your life is kind of set. No many would sell their mother for a copper piece, not even *Wille*, he would settle for a silver piece or two. His mother died delivering him, so the street life was the only option for a gnome in his situation. ### Zaron Zit The allgeded leader of *Aire Fumè*, although he has never been discovered by authorities, and neither has their headquarters. These days, they live under the protection of the priests who use them for subterfuge services in exchange for safety of their own. That is, until someone outpays them. ``` ```

And I do trust you Daragrim, however, the circumstances wont let me speak as frankly as I want to in public. You know these rats as well as I do. Everyone. Every damn politician, priest and smart mouth is a poisoner these days. A real nimcompoop of the great Tarrasque itself. But I speak out of turn. Daragrim, Im afraid I must ask something of you. And even more, Im sorry to have to ask you at all. You remember that necklace Morlen gave you? I trust you still carry it to this day. I dont want you to remember too much, but I guess that this is ineveitable even without my interference. You remember the Order I presume, and Morlens father, Mero. The Stormshields and us were always quite close, right up until, well you know. According to Mero, he forged that necklace himself. And inside, he hid a clue to the Orders secrets and inventions. Needless to say, the Heirs are involved. Had I had the time, I would have done something myself, but all my work is politics now, and deliveries to butter the right people. I know you have been looking for a way out of here, and I dont want to raise suspiscion talking to you. Find out what you can from the necklace, and seek out information on the Heirs. I beg of you, Daragrim. I dont know who else to turn to. * > *- Sincerely, Doravrem*

\page # World map With base in the map and setting of **Tal `Dorei**, many of the locations are set, however, their contents are not. I will provide background for the major areas and cities, as well as some settings not found on the map, and thus can be placed anywhere one might see fit. - #### Autumn Horn This farmer village is situated by the coast, and is famous for their wheat brew and their old lighthouse said to be haunted by the spirit of a mermaid. For some reason, her spirit is stronger during the summer storms. - #### Bronbog Now buried in ash and poisonous gases after the calamity, not much remains but **Dreamseep Marshlands**. This uninviting place is now home only to creatures who tolerates this hard conditions. - #### Cliffkeep Mountains The northern most series of mountain, and the sleeping place for both *Ortelia* and *Sumray* after killed by ***Tarrasque***. Their artifacts also lost here, but never officially found. Situated in its center, **The Grey Valley** remains the unly unvisited place to scholars. - #### Daggerbay Mountains Home of the Kenku clan, now in the claws of gnoll outlaws who reside in the old outpost at the foot of the mountain. The kenku wants it back, but there is no help to receive from **Tarra**, as the Kenku are bound by an unbreakable oath. - #### Drynna The headquarters of *The Milita* is situated here, as well as a fishery situated by **Mooren Lake**. The village has been troubled with local bandits utilizing posion to steal from the local traders. Being relatively new, its constructs are more or less made of wood and local materials. - #### Drynnen A small farming village in the old world, mostly relying on honest work and people passing through to get by. Its only inn, **The Drunken Mare** is run by *Hagley*, a resistance sympathizer, who can provide some help if the right conditions are met. - #### Emerald Outpost Situated by the foot of **Daggerbay Mountains** and overrun by gnolls seeking riches in the mountains. Unaware to them, it is not called **Emerald Outpost** because of its riches, but quite the contrary. The Kenku has long desired the place back, but its not worth the effort of a lousy gnoll clan according to **Tarra**. - #### Emon / Tarra The capital is situated by the western shores of the **Ozmit Sea**, and has for centuries been a trading metropol connected to other countries. Being taken over by *The Priesthood*, is it renamed to **Tarra** to reflect their worship of ***Tarrasque***. At the **Scar of the Cinder King**, it is said that an ancient red dragon once resided, but that is all but a legend. Now more corrupt than ever, only the smartest survive here.

- #### Fort Daxio This fort used to have a purpose, being defending the capital form both goliath and dragonborn advances from the north. Being cut of financially in recent years, it is now left to defend mostly themselves against the goliaths who still reside in the mountains. - #### Jorenn Village The last true goblin city. Since gold and riches were found in **Umbra Hills** a couple of centuries back, the city grew pretty fast. However, all riches has to end, and the goblins became more attracted to the west than their own city in the end. Deep gnomes see this as an oppurtunity, and seek to rid the city of all other gnomes and renaming it **Svirfneblin Ville**. - #### Kraghammer Not much remains after this dwarven metropole got destoyed. Its ruins now roamed by orcs, duergar and the like. Deep within the stone works, a secret is said to reside for those who know the secret to *The Order of the Hammer*. The duergar keeps searching for treasure an rebuidling their tunnels. - #### Kymal A center for politcal operations throughout **Tal `Dorei**, responsible for taxing and juridical matters. Several halv-elves reside in the city and occupy central positions. Answering directly to **Tarra**, frustration is growing by the day due to lack of information. In addition, several groups are trying to take advantage of this by infiltrating key positions in the juridical section. - #### Murdoon Mines Working as a mining station to the mines of **Gatshadow**, **Murdoon** are famous for its wagon and instrument crafting. This comes in handy when **Westruun** works as a crossroads for traders from both east and west. **The Bramblewood** has been plagued with a mystical rot making wagon crafting difficult.

- #### Lyrengorn Home to the great dragonborns of the north, a massive volcano now frozen into solid ice and snow. It is said that great dragons once resided here, which would explain the heritage of the white dragonborns. These have not been seen for years, and the city of **Draconia** is said to have been lost with their passing. - #### Parchwood Stretching all the way from **Turst Fields** to **Whitestone**, this forest is largely untouched. Except from the few elf clans living here. Travelers report of devil sighting, and glowing lights from the forest. The elves themselves are nowhere to be seen. Maybe they have all escaped to **The Feywild**? - #### Ranthoor Fields Station Remants of a war long ago, **Ranthoor** is not a field station anymore. These days, they are more concerned with the spreading of cackle fever, seemingly sprouting out of nowhere. Some claim is spawns from the imported potatoes, while some blaim witchery. - #### Rifenmist The southern kingdom of **Rifenmist** were untouched by the calamity, and does not wish to trade with **Tal`Dorei** anymore, except when the *The Collegaues* are involved.They simply do not trust the priests, or anyhone else in the capital for that matter. Controlling most of **The Ozmit Sea**, **Tarra** has no choice but to comply. For now. To cross the vast forest seems like suicide unless done by boat, or simply burned down. - #### Stilben Secluded from most of the outside world, the halflings of **Stilben** keep going on with their daily life without concern for both priests and monsters. Always welcoming towards strangers, and therefore easily manipulated. They dont want no alliances, as they are self sufficient on fishing. Living in a swamp they are however dependent on the usual trade form time to time. - #### Stormcrest Mountains **The Ashen Gorge** was the sleeping place of ***Tarrasque***, or so it is said. What used to be quite a rich nature is now reduced to an overly quiet place. It is said that animals and man were affected alike by the calamity, but to think they`ve all grown silent seems unnatural. - #### Syngorn The high elves of **Syngorn** were one of few open minded and social elven communities. That is before they lost *Ortelia* and became inverted and hostile towards others. To pass into the city, one has to know the way between **Orencleft** and **Tormor Falls**, as other acceses has been blocked by magic.

``` ``` - #### Terrah Both fear and goliaths reside in **Terrah**, as it is therefore seldom visited by outsiders. The tribe har lived here for years, only going on temporary raids, usually after the autum harvest. Conflict also reside within, as two opposing families crave dominance over each other. - #### The Neverfields The northern most border of the country, a barren wasteland of snow storms and blizzards. According to tales, this is a crossing every dragonborn of **Lyrengorn** had to make, and is also why their scales are white. The stubbornness of the dragonborn would suggest they have walked into extinction, but they seem far to proud for this. - #### The Pools of Wittebak An outpost for scholars trying to map the entirity of **Cliffkeep Mountains**, their most desired area being **The Grey Valley**. This valley is said to contain wildlife and plants most desirable to science. Being tied to *The Old*, the scientists are more vagabonds than scholars, but still they search. - #### The Shadesteps Said to have been the leftovers of an delusional wizards trickery, **The Shadesteps** are nothing more than rocky formations. The mystisim draws magicians here from far and wide as a pilgrimage, or as a rite of passage to be accepted into **The University of Emon**.

\page - #### The Shifting Keep Situated in a bog, this old keep never resides in the same place twice. The only thing certain is that it is located near the **Feshun River** and that it contains a treasure of **Syngorn**. - #### Torian Forest The wood elves living here are a proud line of nature worshippers and druids. The *Serpent`s Head* are the remnants of the time the elves faught against the Yuan-ti in an age long forgotten. The defeat of the Yuan-ti removed them from this plane of existence, and the *Serpent`s head* are a brutal reminder of the danger they posed. - #### Turst Fields On the way from **The Old World** to the new, you have to pass through **Turst Fields** as this is one of few roads still intact. Being a farming village, most rely on a good harvest to stay alive, no thanks to the uninterested *Grindoll Kali*, running the village on behalf of **Westruun**. He is more interested in fabolous parties and the like to have any time left to look after the village. Pity, because hill giants have recently taken home in the mountains to the north. - #### Tz`arrm Capital of **Rifenmist**, initiallt founded as a port town, it quickly grew in size to support the trade between east and west of **Tal `Dorei**. A growing economy, and a desire to expand, let the government of **Rifenmist** to invade their neighbours. **Tz`arrm** har remained untouched for a millenina, and has became a metropol of not only sea trade, but knowledge and information. - #### Westruun One of the cities in the borderlands between east and west. Being a trade city, merchants and workers come here to get work og seek oppurtunity. Both the priesthood and *The Milita* wants to control the city, but neither have expanded far enough to reach dominance. It is said that the city is run by both light and shadow, whatever that may mean. Regardless, the smiths and merchants are reason enough to come here. - #### Whitestone In the isolated colds of the north, there lies a grandeur, solitary, castle. But not always. As the crescent moon rises above the **Alabaster Sierras**, the castle appears on a height in **Whitestone**. This is **Whiteseat**, and its inhabitants are all touched by a curse, and swear to revenge everything that cursed themselves and others. - #### Wildemount Kingdom to the east, long thought to have been empty of civilization until fairly recently. The vast forest connecting the peninsula to the east were only homw to owlbears and other beasts before elves noticed the smoke rising from the woods. This could mean a forest fire, or civilisation.

- #### Wrettis Totally destroyed by an avalanche after the awakening of ***Tarrasque***, which left all the surviving halflings without a home. Still residing in **The Old World**, they wish to rebuild **Wrettis** in another location to continue their proud tradition of saddle making. - #### Zeprah The *Temple of the Elements* resides here, along with the monk order who upholds the traditions of the monastery. Situated with a swamp on one side, and a thick poisionous forest on the other, just to locate the temple is its own challenge. - #### Zylamount Thick mist layers the top of the mountain. So thick that it seems magical, and no snow is showing. The only knwon person to live here, lives at the very base of the mountain, and she only says four things: *"Don`t go there, unicorn, shadow, milkshake*". Being regarded as mad, no one talks to her, but noe one climbs the mountian either.

## Ideas - Opposing forces are a nice way of creating tension and drama, but several forces with diffrent agendas create a sense of choice for the players. The option of starting out in borth east or west could drastically change the outcome of what factions the players sympathize with. - The ***Tarrasque*** does not have to be the ultimate evil, he can rather be a means of promoting a true villains intent. - The plot can be structured around acquiring *The Heirs of Dawn*. Since they do not come with any stats, they dont have to be legendary and can therefore be acquired throughout the story. - The ambiguity of moral is always interesting. Sure, *The Milita* is the underdog, but what if they have a deserter they want to execute without a trial? What about an empathizing villain? - An NPC can function as a guide throughout the campaign, e.g. *Umeban* who`s goal is to gather information. This might include the players going on mission to help him. ## Tips - Have your characters answer a question in plenum before the session starts; whats your characters secret wish, or what do your character desire the most - Music is everything when it comes to setting the tone. I usually have a theme when reading the summary for the last session etc. - Including the background of your PCs helps futher the story. You can easily incorporate them into an already existing faction or the goal of another NPC, e.g. *Doravrems* letter to *Daragrim*. - Bad stats are a gift, and roleplaying is not all about optimizing. This is what I feel separates *DnD* from a regular game; you cannot really play wrong since its not about winning. - Its okay to borrow and be a bit clichè. This is basically what this module is all about. Use whatever you want, alter it, or leave other parts out entirely.
