\page # No Mistakes, Just Happy Accidents A series of heists has left an undeniable trail. Everyone knows what the next target will be **The Portrait of the Seven; one last shared laugh.** The painting is one of the few to contain all members of the historic adventuring party before their tragic split. The museum director, Lady Findlay, is desperate to find a way of protecting the painting. She has hired your adventuring party to assist her chief of security, Nermit Grumblebottom. The other thefts have left investigators stumped. No one has caught a glimpse of the culprit, and no evidence has been found at any of the crime scenes. However, each robbery reports the same supernatural occurrences. It is as if the paintings themselves moved off the wall, and ancient works of art around the stolen pieces of art seem to have a new life to them.

## Key NPCs ### Lady Findlay #### The Curator Quiet, reserved, and inquisitive, Lady Findlay found herself fascinated by the ever evolving world of art, eventually becoming the youngest curator of the Zagig Memorial Museum. She is efficient, but this efficiency comes at the cost of her personal appearance, and approachability, but this doesn't bother her too much. She tends to avoid being in front of crowds, even small ones, as much as possible. Lady Findlay will occasionally stammer over her words, fall completely silent as she thinks over the parties ideas, but will also not hesitate to quickly, and fervently shut down any of their “plots” that may harm her museum. She is smart and calculated, but not cold. She will happily gush over a rather masterfully built instrument the bard has, or find beauty in the natural grace of the druid or rangers apparel. She will compliment the wizard on the elaborate design of their spell book, and will even comment on the strength and presence of a fighter or barbarian. ##### Key Traits - **Art is precious:** it cannot be harmed or put in harm's way - **The Museum can not close:** it would be too much work to close the museum. We hired your party to keep the museum safe and open. ``` ``` ### Nermit Grumblebottom #### The Night Watch Loud, aggressive, and self assured, Nermit Grumblebottom is the Museum's not so silent protector. After a long and successful adventuring career, Nermit retired to protecting the museum in a last ditch attempt to feel adventurous one more time. A proud protector, Nermit comes down on loiterers, littered with the same fervor that he used to fight bandits and demons. A bright red-orange beard, formed into two ponytails, hangs low against his chest. His eyes completely covered by large bushy eyebrows. Donning his full regalia, (Helmet, armor, hammer and all) Nermit sticks out like a sore thumb amongst a crowd of commoners. ##### Key Traits - **A way out of a jam:** Nermit can be used as a way to save your party from traps or combat encounters that be come to difficult for the party. - **Suspicious:** Nermit will suspect the players as art thieves in disguise unless they can convince him otherwise. - **Loud:** Nermit's voice booms and his armor echoes down the hallway. If Nermit does not trust the party he will tag along with them, severely hampering their ability to sneak. - **Slow:** Nermit can be easily tricked or outrun by the party if he insists on following them. ### Russ "Wall Walker" Nolzur #### The Thief Russ is a descendant of Nolzur, the Company of Seven’s skilled illusionist, alchemist, lover of the arts, and a former thief. Nolzur left the Company of Seven after a falling out with the rest of his former friends. Russ, using the name “the Wall Walker” is on a crusade to avenge his long dead and forgotten relative by stealing all works of art that paint the Company of Seven as a cheery, perfect group of heroic saints. ##### Key Traits - **Righter of Wrongs:** Russ will be difficult to talk down, he believes his family's honor relies on him. - **Brain over Brawn:** Russ will prefer to use traps, and hit and run tactics against the party if he is found out. He will only fight all out if he is cornered.

> ##### Tools of the Trade Lacking both strength and agility, Russ is able to accomplish his amazing feats of thievery due to his near pristine set of Nolzur’s Marvelous Pigments **(page 183 of the Dungeons and Dragons 5e Dungeon Master's Guide.)** Russ' affinity, and years of study, have allowed him to unlock long forgotten uses of the pigments and paints found within. Russ can walk into and through paintings, interacting with the scenes and figures within. Not only does this allow him to move through the museum nearly undetected, it also allows him to use the works of art around him as traps, and weapons to keep others at bay. ``` ``` ### Welcome to Zagig Memorial Museum of Curated Arts Approaching the museum, you are struck with the sheer size of it. Nestled in the heart of the city, the museum manages to distinguish itself with impressive success. Two tall watchtowers cast their shadow on a hedge maze in the front lawn. Colorful banners float just above the entrance. Inside large, decorated windows fill the foyer with the gentle, chromatic, glow. Lady Findlay will approach the party once they have entered the museum.

**"Quite a sight isn't it? Largest museum in the realm, home to more than 100 original works of art, 50 statues, a collection of relics from across the known world, and an intact dragon skeleton. You must be the help for our little problem. Come, come, right this way." **

\page Lady Findlay leads you to her office. An out of the way, cluttered office that looks over the main foyer of the museum. She collapses into the chair behind her desk, then straightens as she addresses you.

**" I was tasked with protecting each and every piece inside this museum. I have poured every ounce of myself into this place. I will do whatever it takes to keep it safe.**

### The Job Lady Findlay will explain that they believe the thief's main target will be the **The Portrait of the Seven; one last shared laugh.** It is currently being kept under a large, protective security case. The party will need to patrol it's exhibit while also keeping an eye on the other exhibits in the museum.

*She leans in to whisper* **"It is said that Nolzur, of Greyhawk fame, has returned to reclaim what he believes is rightfully his. At first I scoffed at this notion, but lately that rumor seems to be materializing before my very eyes. Every artifact and item that has gone missing, has in one way or another been connected to the Company of Seven. I'm beginning to fear we are dealing with someone much more dangerous than a common criminal"**

After accepting the mission, Lady Finlay explains to the players that they can either wait until the museum closes or return once it has closed for the night. The night's watch, Nermit, will be there to meet and aide them with anything they may need. She tells the players of the general rules of the museum and sends them on their way. Before they exit her office she stops them and exclaims.

**"Please be very careful with the items of this museum, they are in most cases invaluable. Anything broken or damaged during your investigation, will come out of the final reward ... That is all."** *As she smiles and returns to reading a book that reads 'The Company of Seven: A Comprehensive History'."*

### The Reward Because of how potentially valuable the art in the museum could be, it is difficult to attach a hard number to the reward for your party. We feel much safer leaving the fine details of the reward to you. However, we recommend thinking through how destruction to the museum or individual exhibits will alter their final payment. ``` ``` ## A Night at the museum

> ##### DM Note > The following section acts as the exploration/encounter phase of this module. We have selected a few scenarios that we feel would provide great pacing and varied encounters. As with the NPCs feel free to bring your own creations or ideas into this section! >

### First Encounter The museum feels hollow at night. As you walk through the darkened hallways even the slightest amount of sounds seems to leave an otherworldly echo. You turn a corner and are met with a strange sight. Crisp autumn leaves dance in a breeze at the end of the hallway, above them stands a tall painting of a couple walking down a forgotten path on a pristine fall day. Have your party make an investigation (intelligence) check to see if you notice that the two people in the painting are painted in different stroke patterns. **(DC 15 Investigation)** History check to see if you recall the painting, and remember that the man in the painting was never supposed to be there. **(DC 15 History)** **If the players touch the painting;** the painting itself reacts as if it was liquid, giving a small ripple effect. The players may stretch their arms into the painting, and can step inside of it into the autumn landscape. Inside the painting, the brushstrokes making up the scene within are frozen in time. Upon further investigation, this scene seems to be sitting alone with a large expanse of white canvas stretching endlessly in each direction. A man in a form fitting black suit is caught mid stride, while holding the hand of a faceless woman in a bright red dress reaching up to hold on to her extravagant hat. Dried orange and brown leaves float in the air around the couple. Old cottages and trees line the path. **If players approach the couple;** the man, Russ in disguise, springs to life. He pulls out an ornate paintbrush and begins painting a series of quick, repeating circles in the air around him. As the paint flies off of his brush the previously dormant scene comes alive with movement. Gale force winds begin throwing leaves, dirt, branches, and the still frozen girl around the party. The mysterious figure flashes a coy smile at the party, and throws paint over the door of a small cottage and exits the painting in a flash, the portal he leaves behind begins to shrink slowly. ### Swept Away Have your party make **Constitution DC 15** checks to avoid being picked up by the windstorm, if they fail they are swept up into the air. \page > ##### Time is running out! > The players must make it out of the painting in time, lest they be trapped inside! We recommend giving your party between 3 (HARD) and 5 (EASY) turns to escape. However, the challenge may need to be tailored depending on your parties level. They can make use of ropes, magic items, and each other to escape in time. Feel free to pelt party members with other items caught in the windstorm. ### The Chase is On Once the party successfully escapes the painting the party spills out into the hallway. Have your players make a perception check for a trail that Russ has left behind. **(A successful check** ***DC 10*** **notices colorful paint drops on the ground leading in one direction.)** Russ spins in surprise as your party rounds the corner. He dashes down the hallway, rolling up a piece of art and putting it in a small tube attached to his waist. Grabbing a brush with his free hand he slaps paint on several paintings as he retreats further into the museum. >If your players chase Russ down the hallway, they will be tested with a series of traps as the paintings Russ marked come to life around them. Instead, you may wish to divide these traps up over several encounters. ### The Mariners Last Stand

**A 6' by 12' foot mural of a small sea vessel fighting against a kraken during a chaotic storm.**
The painting releases a torrent of water as the party rushes by. All party members near 15 feet of the painting must make **Dexterity checks (DC 15)** or be swept **10 feet** away from the painting, taking **1d6 bludgeoning damage**. Players are trapped in the current until they succeed a **Dexterity Check (DC 15)**.

***The stench of seawater fills the hall and a grumbling, slowly emanates from a painting on the wall. Before you can react, a deluge of water spills out into the hallway. Littered with broken planks and floating debris, the rush of water doesn't seem to be stopping.***

The player who makes the lowest Dex check is also grabbed by a giant tentacle that reaches through the painting, taking **2d6 bludgeoning damage** now, and at the start of their next turn. An **Athletics Check (DC 18)** will allow the target to escape the grasp of the tentacle. Players may attack the tentacle, which has** 48 HP**, and an **AC of 15**, or the painting, which has an** AC of 12** and an **HP of 5**. All attacks made by players who were caught in the wave of water are made with disadvantage. After about **20 seconds, or 3 rounds**, the magic on the painting wears out, and the tentacle is ripped in half as the portal closes, killing it instantly. The water and tentacle remain after the portal closes. ### The Elemental Plane of Ice

**A 10' by 4' landscape painting capturing the tranquility of a frozen ocean in the elemental plane of ice. **
This beautiful work of art captures the colors of the frozen, infinite ocean of the elemental plane of ice. As the players move past the painting, a hole in the portal rips open and an icy gale blows into the hallway, bring shards of ice and snow with it.

***A light whistling can be heard coming from a brightly colored painting depicting a frozen ocean and flickering colorful lights in the sky. A piercing cold air can be felt blowing through the hole, when all of the sudden the small hole tears open letting in a rush of arctic air. ***

\page The players must each find a way of getting out of the water left from the last painting or risk being frozen in ice, taking **1d6+2 cold damage** until they free themselves. You can do this through combat rounds, or you can have the players each use a skill to try and escape the icy gale. The players may also chose to make a ranged attack against the painting, **AC 12 HP 5.** All ranged attacks made against the painting have disadvantage due to the wind, including magical ones. Any players that move within 5 feet of the painting takes an immediate **1d12 of cold damage** from the arctic winds. The portal closes after **30 seconds, or 5 rounds**, leaving the hallway covered in snow and ice afterwards. The ice is considered difficult terrain, but players may move across it normally after successfully making a **Dexterity check (DC 10)**, falling prone on an unsuccessful check.

### A Window to the Infinite

**A 2' by 2' painting created by a wizard who traveled the planes, capturing their rarely seen beauty.**
After the players catch get a moment to catch their breath, a painting at the very end of the hallway comes to life. This painting immediately begins pulling everything within **30 feet** of it inside of it. Lose tiling, plants, statues, paintings, and the players are all pulled into the vacuum.

***At the end of the hall lies a painting of a burst of color surrounded by darkness. The allure of this painting is undeniable, it seems as though everything is getting closer to it. Too close to it! As a small potted plant whizzes by your head directly into the painting and into the dark abyss."***

Players will be pulled **15 feet** closer to the painting unless they pass a **Dexterity check (DC 15)**, at the start of each their turns. The frozen floor gives the players disadvantage on their checks if it is still present. On each of their turns, have your players make a **Dexterity saving throw (DC 10)** to avoid getting hit by debris, taking the full damage on a fail or half as much on a success. Roll a **1d4** to determine what they are hit by. | Object | Damage if Hit| |:----:|:-------------| | Statue | 1d10 | | Potted plant | 1d6 + 2 | | Swarm of wall tiles | 1d4 + 2 | | Painting | 1d4 | Any player who is pulled into melee range of the portal faces a new threat. They plug the painting, and are considered grappled. An **Athletics Check (DC 20)** will free them from this grapple. The vacuum also comes to a stop, and other players fall to the floor and may move normally. The grappled player is not safe though, they will take 1d6 force damage as long as they are grappled. The party can work together to free their friend, subtracting 2 to the required strength check for each beneficial thing they can think of to assist their friend. The vacuum effect of the painting will end after 5 rounds, freeing any players grappled by it.
> ##### Create your own encounters >Here are several ideas for other encounters you can use throughout the museum ### Lost in a maze Russ paints an entire canvas to look like a hallway. Inside the painting, hallways lead in continuous circles, stairwells lead to upside down rooms, the longer the players spend inside this painting, the more ridiculous their circumstances. A **Perception check (DC 20)** will help the players realize they are in a painting and find the exit. ### Statues come to life Create a room of statues that spring to life and attack the party. Use a monster or monsters that provide your party with an appropriate challenge ### A Dragon brought back to life Remember that skeleton we mentioned earlier? Think about using it as a mini boss encounter? If you wanted to use a foe that is outside of your players capabilities, you could point out that certain bones in the skeleton look brittle. If they are able to attack and destroy these bones the entire skeleton will crumble! ### Persistence of Memory A faceless figure stands within a painting and beckons the party forward. Tapping it's foot impatiently as it looks down to it's watch. The moment your party steps through the painting, everything around begins to shift in random and incoherent ways. A tree in front of them begins melting like wax, while the feeling of freezing cold and searing hot rush over them simultaneously. The figure before them falls through the ground. Their reality is crumbling before their very eyes, the only thing they must do is escape before losing their sanity. \page # The Final Encounter Russ stands before the famed **Portrait of the Seven; one last shared laugh**, with disgust in his eyes. The vibrant picture shows uncontainable joy and laughter. Zagig Yragerne, adorned in exquisite blue wizard robes, is doubled over in laughter as Keoghtom places his hand on his shoulder to hold himself up. All seven members in a perceived laughing fit with a young Nolzur standing in the middle. Face covered in soot, smoke billowing around his apprehensive grin. Your party walks into a large, hollow, circular room. A large mural is currently underway on the ceiling above you, flimsy wooden platforms and ladders have been set up to allow the artist to come in during the day to work, a massive undertaking in this 55 foot diameter room. The mural depicts an army of angels waging war against a legion of devils. In the center of the room in front of you, under a thick, clear case, floats the **Portrait of the Seven**, and in front of it stands Russ.

*** Russ quickly pulls out a paintbrush as you enter the room, he draws a nearly perfect circle on the display case before trying to jump through it. He fails, looking dumbfounded at the case before dashing across the room and up one of the scaffolds.***

## Russ' Tactics Russ has finally reached his goal, but the case surrounding the painting is enchanted to prevent any magical attempts at passing through it. Russ' only method of being able to break into the case will be by smashing through it. We recommend using some, if not all, of the ideas below in your boss fight, but feel free to make it your own! - **The Portrait is his priority**. At least one attack must be made by Russ' or his minions against the case each turn. All though the case has no set AC or HP, you should use it to estable tension throughout the fight. If Russ is able to smash through the case he will attempt to retrieve the painting and flee, no matter his form. - **Russ will not fight the party directly**. Throughout the battle, Russ will summon angels and demons made of paint from the mural above to attack the case and the party. ***it requires an action to summon a creature from the painting*** - **Ladders and Scaffolding**. Add three, 5' wide, 20' tall, scaffolds in different areas of the room. Players can attempt to climb up them, but they are difficult terrain unless a player can pass an Athletics check of 15 or a Acrobatics check of 10. These flimsy boards can also be knocked over if they take 10 points of damage, or if a player can push it over with an Athletics check of 18, - **Russ prefers high ground**. Russ can traverse the scaffolding without the penalty to his speed. He can only summon angels and demons from the mural if he is on top of the scaffolding. If all of the scaffolds are destroyed, Russ will enter into his paint monster form. - **Paint portals**. Russ and his minions can pass through any large collection of paint and appear out of another. If Russ or any of his creations end their turn inside the portal they take 5 points of damage and are thrown out of a random paint portal. - **Back against the wall** If Russ drops below 10hp, if all of the scaffolding is destroyed, or at a climactic point in the battle, Russ will either cover himself in paint, or will jump into a large puddle of paint left by the mural. This will transform him into a large paint monster. He will use at least one attack each turn to attack the case. - **The helpful night security**. If your players aren't picking up on the fact that the scaffolding can be destroyed, you can have Nermit rush into the room and knock one over. He can then stay around and help the party fight, or he can be buried in the rubble if your party can manage on their own. ### Angels and Demons Here is a collection of creatures you could have Russ summon out of the mural. Each Devil on the field will serve the sole purpose of causing as much chaos possible by engaging the party with relentless combat. - **Angels will actively hinder players movement**. Each Angel will use it's crowd control actions to limit the movement of the party

\page ## The Paint Construct When the players force Russ to reach his breaking point, he will take the form of the Paint Construct.

***Russ quickly sinks into a large puddle of paint on the floor. All of the minions that had previously been fighting with the party, fall to the ground and join with the large puddle. A rumble breaks the silence as a massive arm of paint reaches out of the puddle and slams on the ground as the rest of the figure lifts itself out of the paint. A huge construct made up of swirling paint stands before the party. It bellows outwards, flinging paint in all directions.***

The engulfed target is Blinded, Restrained, and unable to breathe, and it must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw at the start of each of the construct's turns or take 13 (2d8 + 4) bludgeoning damage. If the construct moves, the engulfed target moves with it. The construct can have only one creature engulfed at a time. > >``` >>**Spellcasting** If you feel that the Paint Construct needs to be tougher for your party you could still allow it to cast spells from the Russ spell list. >
>**Lair Actions** If that is not enough you can also add the following legendary lair actions > ### Paint Construct Lair > Being in this museum, the Paint Construct is at home and has many devious tools at its disposal. >#### Lair Actions >On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the construct takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; the paint construct can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row: >- Jagged stalactites of paint fall from the ceiling, striking up to three creatures underneath that the construct can see within 120 feet of it. \page ### If the party is victorious Read the following to the players if they successfully defeat Russ as a paint golem.

***The paint construct begins to seperate as a desperate Russ can be seen frantically grasping at the now diminishing limbs. As the construct becomes nothing more than a large puddle of paint on the ground, Russ scrambles to his feet, but exhaustion brings him back to his knees. ***

Russ does anything he can to try and barter with the party, he will bribe them with riches he does not have, he will offer anything to avoid being captured by the authorities or killed. ### If the party fails Read the following to the players if they fail to defeat Russ

***As the party lay at the feet of the paint construct and it's minions, the large form separates in the middle as a tired but determined Russ slowly walks out. He snarls at the players as he passes them in route to the Portrait of the Seven. "My quarrel is not with you, but it will be if you dare follow me any longer." He snaps his fingers as all of the minions surrounding your players fall into puddles on the ground. Russ can be seen walking into a dark hallway as his figure disappears from sight.***

``` ``` ### If the Russ is able to retrieve the painting If the painting is obtained by Russ, he will instantly flee. Utilizing some of the chase mechanics found on **pg 252-255 in the Dungeons and Dragons 5e Dungeon Master's Guide**, this could be a great opportunity to help lead your players through portions of the museum they have already become accustomed to or new locations. ### Treasure This is a great opportunity to survey the scene and determine the monetary gift for the party. Considering the level of damage done to the museum itself should be a deciding factor in the final amount provided by Lady Findlay. #### Secret Treasure For any curious players, a relatively easy to medium perception check could reveal Nolzur's Marvelous Pigments covered in the puddles of paint left behind by the battle. Then again, this can also be revealed by you and used as reward for the party as well.
