{{footnote Made by Diana2112Gaming using Homebrewery v3}} \page # Diego, *Knight-Errant* A half-elf, and one of the most deadly swordsmen alive. A Knight-Errant of the Eclipsing Dawn Syndicate, he's known more for his wenching than his bladework--no small feat that! His full name and styles: Diego, the Shadow's Baneman, First Sword of the Empire, Champion of the Weaver, High Executioner. ### A Rough Childhood Young Diego grew up an orphan, and was taken in by the Pirate King, taught the Way of the Blade, and how to work with the Tangential Element of Water, as the King served Jorth, the Shipwright. However, he was a rare talent, a Tertiary Distortionist, and water was only his secondary element. His primary was Shadow, and working with the Esoteric Elements would be taught to him by the King's Scribe. He became good friends with the Crown Prince, and would cause many, many issues for the Court. It was during this time he earned the name "Dragonheart," for his fearless nature, both at court, and in battle. ### Exile Nothing gold can stay, though, and due to his nature as a half-elf, the Captain of the Guard, Brutus the Raven, leveraged the Laws of Secrecy against Diego, and forced the Pirate King to exile him, despite the king viewing him as a son. However, the King was just, and Diego would not allow Timil Deeps to fall into civil war on his behalf, with a "Rules for Thee and Not For Me" as the Raven wanted. Ever the King had raised him to be an honorable man. So it was he found himself on the mainland, with naught but a sword, shield, and his armor. Homeless, friendless, and no direction. He took the mantle of Knight-Errant, and began to defend the weak, as his god, the Shadoweaver, would have it. Eventually he made his way to the oldest guild in Avalon... {{note ##### The Eclipsing Dawn Syndicate Known to many simply as **The Guild**, The Eclipsing Dawn Syndicate is the oldest, most respected guild in Avalon. It has been around since shortly after the Kinslaying, providing the people with mercenary services, healers, and skilled laborers as they need--if the price is right. ##### The Neutrality of the Guild The Guild remains neutral in all matters. They do not pick kings, and no Guildsman will fight another--so don't think to use them to kill your rival or win your war. His *Voreel* blade was given to him *by* the Shadoweaver himself, after it was reclaimed from someone who had stolen it from a priest of the order, while he was working as a caravan guard for Helen, the Cloth & Spice Merchant. He executes (no pun intended) his office diligently, keeping the *Voreel* as a **Bound Blade**, something he can summon at will from anywhere in Avalon (though normally it hangs above his mantle at The King's Blessing Inn, where he has a room on permanent loan from Mr. Brightsworth, the goodman of the establishment). If you find yourself facing him, and see him suddenly fling his right arm out, hand open, thumb down, then you've committed a crime worthy of punishment by death in the eyes of the Tailors. It's a terribly short list, that (usually involves assault), but know you will not escape his Justice. He's a Shadowshaper, after all. {{classTable,frame,decoration ###### The Voreel Blade Is an enchanted blade made by the Shadoweaver out of Shadowsteel, with Shadowdragon hide and ebony grips, and all obsidian gem fittings. There are only a handful of them in all of Avalon, given only to executioners of the Tailors--they are, in fact, an Executioner's Sword. 3.5 spans long (5.5 feet/1.67m), about a handwidth wide, with five fullers, and a flat tip, it is as much a mark of office as it is the tool of that office. }} ### Helen, Hela, oh Hel... One of the more notable and defining relationships during Diego's exile has been with Helen, the Cloth & Spice Merchant. Ten years he served as her *only* caravan guard, and lover, after meeting her on the side of the road one day, where she sat, alone, singing to Nightingales. He would later muse how that should have tipped him off, since that's the sacred bird of the Empress of Dreams. Yet it was not until his near-death against overwhelming numbers of Draugr, so that Helen could escape with her life, that she revealed herself as Hela, the Goddess of Spirit, Queen of the Dead, as she brought his spirit back from the brink. ### Today He lives alone, in a room on the top floor of the King's Blessing. He wages a neverending war against the Kinslayer, and, upon finding out the Pirate King was murdered, seeks to bring the killer to justice. \page # Tips for Roleplaying Diego It's all about flash, flare, and Derring-Do! Diego never backs down from a challenge, but he's also no fool. He knows when the battle is lost, and will make a tactical retreat, but by the same token, if it's to be his life, or the life of an innocent, he will give his life every time. Diego is a man of the "Three Virtues," Wine, Women, and Song. He drinks heavily, enjoys the company of a good (or bad!) woman, and plays the *Guitarra*, a nine stringed instrument with four courses of the strings arranged in double courses (it's a Baroque Guitar, for those curious of the *exact* instrument in the real world). He's also a passable lute player, but much prefers his guitarra. ### Combat Style Diego is a Tertiary Distortionist, with the elements of Shadow, Water, and Dark. So he can move between shadows, flitting around the field of battle, phase his body out of existence and let an enemy blade pass through him, replicate his blade in ice, launch ice spikes, turn the floor into ice, and blind his opponents. He's also a master swordsman with every kind of blade, from the shortswords they use in gladitorial combat (something he did to earn coin), to the massive zweihanders most mercenaries tend to carry. His preferred blade is a bastard sword, paired with a roundshield. It is important to note that **when** in Avalon's history you're roleplaying Diego, using his Dark Distortionism is incredibly dangerous, as Brother Od, god of darkness, was mantled by the Kinslayer--and to use that element is to touch the Kinslayer directly, making him, in essence, a Secondary Distortionist. ### Quirks and Foibles Diego smokes a pipe, regularly. Not a day goes by he doesn't have a fill of some kind of herb, tobacco, or plant. When he is stressed, he tends to lean towards **Kraken's Krush**, a brown herb prized by sailors for the sense of calm it brings when smoked. It is also mildly addictive. Rarely, he will smoke **Wyrmwood**, a deep red herb prized by nobles for the sense of focus and clarity it brings. His primary pipe fill is either a blend of cherry pipe tobacco from the Eastdunes, or a mint blend of his own concoction using tobacco and **Gorgon's Breath**, a mint plant that also has a bit of a poison to it. As a pipe smoker, he also collects pipes, and has a ruby ring dedicated for pipe lighting. Since Mr. Brightsworth is a Fire adept (never rose to Distortionist), he keeps the ring charged for Diego, in addition to renting his room out. Diego collects swords. Every shape, every kind. Usually, he has a sword made for every kind of dragon he's fought, and has the sword made for that dragon's region (so if the fire drake is from the desert, it's a scimitar, if the water drake is from the oceans, it's a cutlass, and so on), then has the sword hilt wrapped in that dragon's hide, over the appropriate gemwood. ### Shoot Last, Ask Questions First Diego believes in diplomacy above destruction. He may worship the "God of Shadows," but one of that god's prime directives is "Thou shalt use thine words, for thou art a big boy or girl" (no, seriously, that's what the Book of Shadows says, it's right there, in "Book IX: Monetarists, And Where Their Heads Belong"). Many believe the Eigthman to be a complete lunatic, devoid of reason--and to some degree, they're right--he **IS** the god of insanity as well as shadows, but there's a method to his madness. Words should always be the prevaling option. Never go in with combat on the brain--and make those words *witty*, Diego is a clever lad! Fun, funny, and flirty (but he never goes where he's not wanted! Do not mistake him being flirty for being *pushy*. He's the perfect gentleman--in pointed fact, part of being a Tailor is quite literally executing those who would take advantage of others). ### Physical Description Diego is 4 spans tall, 14 stone (that's 6'1", 175lb, or 1.85m, 79.37kg). He has long brown hair, and a single, crystal blue eye. His left eye is blind, missing due to a sword fight. The scar that runs from his scalp to his mouth over that eye also twists his mouth into a slight smile. He *sometimes* has a mustache and goatee, but usually stays mostly shaven, at most a 5'o clock shadow. He nearly always braids his hair. He has gills behind his ears for water breathing. He has many, many scars over his body, most notably are the five scars running from right shoulder to left hip, as if a lion maimed him. It is in fact from a Manticore, and as such, the **Black Mists** cause him to go catatonic and seize if they touch him.
