\page When you choose what you want to do (hunting, foraging, fishing) you make a survival check. If you succeed you roll on the corresponding table to see what you find. On top of that, if you roll a 20 and beat the DC you roll on a table of Lucky Events. If you roll a 1, either that you still beat the DC or fail you roll on a table of accidents. If you have advantage on the roll and get two 20s you roll twice on the Lucky Event table. If you have disadvantage and roll two 1s you roll twice on the accidents table. It is advised to roll the Lucky Event after rolling on the table for the survival. ## Foraging If you choose to go foraging make a survival check, beating a DC decided by the DM or based on the environment: on a tie or higher score roll on the tables to see what you find, on a lower score you don't find anything that you can eat. The number of times per long rest you can make a survival check to go foraging equals your survival modifier and it represent your skill and foraging speed, with every roll taking at minimum 30 minutes spent foraging and at maximum 2 hours. For example 8 rolls means 4 hours spent foraging by a skilled explorer, that manages to use efficiently such time. On the other hand one single roll means that in 2 hours our explorer managed to forage only once. If you have advantage in the survival check, or if you are a ranger the number of times remains the same, but you roll twice each time, taking both the results. If you keep on foraging by the same source you can roll again the amount and resource of your finding. If you keep on doing this more than once every time you halve (rounded down) the amount and the weight rolled. ``` ```

\page ## Fishing If you decide to go fishing here there are some quick rules to roleplay such an action. The aproach to fishing is modular, with different steps that can be used to further detail and roleplay the action if the players or the DM wish so. ### 1) The throw When throwing the bait with the fishing rod you make an attack roll, using strenght as the modifier for the attack and you add proficiency if you have it in survival or you take it with the weapon using it in the downtime. There are different fishing rods, with different reach: ##### Cookie Tastiness | Rod | Range | |:----:|:-------------| | Small Rod | 90/120 | | Medium Rod | 60/200 | | Long Rod | 60/300 | When making the attack roll (the "cast") pick a point within reach: on a 20 you hit precisely the point you meant to hit, on any result lower than it the bait falls 10 feet in a random direction away from it for each point of difference. ##### Simplify This step can be entirely skipped to favour a less clunky experience. ### 2) Will a fish take the bait? Determining a good point to fish requires a survival check, which the DM decides the DC (on its wn or using the table in the previous paragraph). Once the bait is in the water fishes in the surroundings may or may not take it: they make an intelligence check, contested by a survival check made by the fisher. On a tie or a loss the fish takes the bait. ##### Simplify The fishing person makes a survival check against the DC of the environment it is fishing in. On a success the DM rolls on the corresponding table to see what fish takes the bait. ### 3) The fish takes the bait When the fish takes the bait an athletics contest starts, similarly like a grapple works: both the fish and the fisher roll for an athletics check and the fish adds double its strenght modifier to the roll and its proficiency score to such a check. If the fish has proficiency in survival or athletics it adds double proficiency (as if it had expertise in the check). The fisher adds its proficiency only if it has proficiency in athletics or survival. If the fisher wins the fish is dragged by a number of feet equal to the strenght score of the fisher towards it, if the fish wins it swims half its speed away from the fisher. On a tie the fish wins. If the fish scores a 20 it swims away by its speed, and if its strenght score is 14 or more it pulls the fisher by a number of feet equal to its strenght modifier. If the fisher scores a 20 it pulls the fish by a number of feet equal to double its strenght score.

\page A fish (like an eel) that tied itself to something or a fisher helped or tied to something have advantage in the check. Every ten athletics contests both the fish and the fisher make a DC 11 constitution saving throw, taking one level of exhaustion on a fail. The DC of the saving throw increases by 1 every ten athletics contests, reaching up to 20. The exhaustion gained this way doesn't kill and ends after a short rest. Additionally in the same moment as these saving throws the DM rolls a d100: on a 1 the fishing line snaps, the fisher loses its rod or it breaks. ##### Simplify This step can be entirely skipped if the players or the DM want to smooth out the moment. This said the contest between fish ad fisher person is one of the main reasons to spice up the fishing process. ### 4) Deep Water If no fish takes the bait for more than one minute, the hook reaches deep waters, provided that there is such a possibility, depending on available water depth. In deep water the tables change. > ##### Real World Problems: overfishing > Nowadays, because of overfishing less and less fishes have the opportunity to survive long enough to reach their maximum size, this is one of the reasons why incredibly large individuals are very very rare, nowadays. The weights reported in the table can give incredibly large individuals of that specific fish, that nowadays are probably impossible to come by. If a trap is prepared the character fabricating it or placing it makes a survival check: its result will be the stealth check of the net. Provided that there is food around (which is solved in the usual way, once for each trap placed), every hour the DM will roll to determine what animal could be trapped. Then such animal will make a perception check, becoming trapped if it doesn't spot the trap. ##### Casting Net You can try to catch food (usually fish) casting a net over your target. The net works like a ranged weapon, but it covers a cylindrical area around your target, engulfing anything within it whose AC is lower than the result of the throw. A creature captured by the net is restrained until it beats an atheltics check or deals enough slashing damage (or other destructive types, like fire or force) to the net. There is no disadvantage in casting the net over a creature within 5 feet from you. The specifics of a net, precisely the size of its meshes may allow small animals to escape it easily. \page ## Open Water Open water is an empty environment, almost like a desert. Water all over, below, on the right, on the left, almost nocertainty.. and yet here there is life. In fact some of the biggest fish can be found here, tuna, sharks, swordfish are just some example of the incredibly kinds of prey. Other than them there are some of the biggest and smarterst mammals on earth, whales. Given the empty nature of the environment smell is a huge factor and if blood is poured in water sharks could be attracted from iles, as well as other fish. Other hotspots are wooden rafts and debris below which smaller fish could find repair. It estimated that only a dozen individuals remain alive. It inhabits the Gulf of California, but it often dies entangled in fishing nets that are the main threat to its life. In general cetaceans are threatened and highly intelligent animals. \page ##### Herring, Anchovy, Sardine Many open water fishes move in schools, usually only sharks and swordfish are lonely. Given their small dimensions herrings, anchovies, sardines and also saury's schools are composed of great amounts of fish, that usually become an attraction for predators. They tend to stay close to each other forming the so called fish balls. Casting a net over a fish ball will result in great amounts of fish catched: the DM should multiply by a d100 the weight of the single fish to determine how many are taken in total with a single cast of the net. ##### Pilot Fish They are really rarely alone, usually they swim together with bigger fish, boats or they float under debris. They mostly move together with sharks.

``` ``` ##### Man of War Fish This fish is usually found together with the dangerous man of war or bluebottle jellyfish (which isn't actually a jellyfih, but a syphonophore, as in a group of organisms living together, think illithid hivemind). The DM may choose to have an encounter with the man of war itself.
**Venomous Sting.** When a creature starts its turn within 5 feet from the bluebottle or enters such range for the first time it must make a DC 12 Dexterity saving throw or be stung by it. Creatures must make this saving throw also if the Bluebottle moves within 5 feet from them. A stung creature must make a DC 12 constitution saving throw, becoming poisoned and taking 1d6 poison damage on a fail, or only taking half as much damage on a success. A poisoned creature can repeat the constitution saving throw every minute to end the condition. \page ##### Giant Tuna The Giant Tuna, or Bluefin Tuna is he largest of Tuna. It is an incredibly powerful fish, muscular, fast, resilient, built for strength and speed. It can escape almost all predators, thanks to speed and size, and can be harmful if it rams onto something at full speed. It lives in the open ocean, feeding off schooling fish. The biggest ever caught was 1500 lbs (680 kg), but such enormous sizes were already rare because of overfishing, in the past they may have been more common. ##### Swordfish and Marlin Together with tuna swordfish and marlin are some of the biggest and fastest bony fishes of the ocean. In particular the smaller sailfish is the fastest fish out there. They are powerful, athletic and their rostrum, their "sword", can be incredibly dangerous. The biggest ever caught, a 1800 lbs (816) kg blue marlin, but, like giant tunas, such sizes have become rare. \page ## Coastal Water Coastal Waters tend to be relatively shallow, rich of life, filled with algae and less dangerous for the general lack of large predators (This isn't always the case though, it mostly depends on depth). We can find rocky bottoms, sandy bottoms, muddy ones as well as estuaries, the places where rivers flow into the sea.

## Hunting If you choose to go hunting first you make a survival check, beating a DC decided by the DM or based on the environment: on a tie or higher score roll on the table to see what you find, on a lower score you don't find anything. Once you find a target to hunt you must roll for stealth and initiative and treat it as a combat encounter where the target could most likely run away if it notices you. Needless to say ranged attacks are very useful to avoid the prey escaping. If you are a ranger, have specific backgrounds related to survival in the wild or if you have proficiency with hunting equipment you gain the following benefit: if you are within half the normal range of your ranged weapon and use it to attack your target (that must be a creature met with a hunting survival check and within the ones of these tables) you score a critical on a hit. If you roll a critical in the attack roll the damage of the critical is tripled rather than doubled.

\page ### Underwater Hunting You can hunt underwater using the proper weapons detailed later (some can also be used from outside the water). Using them allows you to not have disadvantage even if you don't have a swimming speed. Individuals belonging to races with a swimming speed may prefer different aproaches and more effective weapons. #### Weapons The speargun is an underwater weapon made to hunt fish and other sea animals, it works like a crossbow, more or less, using rubber bands or coils to throw the spear. The spear or harpoon itself is made to remain in the prey and it has a rope to pull the target once it has been struck. It is not consumed if the fish takes the bait except if the line or the rod break, but the check to see if something take it is made with disadvantage. ### Accidents * **Undersized.** The item you found weighs half of what you rolled. * **Scarcity.** You found half (rounded down, minimum of 1) of the amount of items you rolled. * Only spices you managed to find only spices. Roll twice on the herbs, spices etc.. table, rather than the table you intended to use. * Near the crab/lobster you were going to catch there is a giant moray pit. It emerges and attacks you. Roll for initiative. * The octopus you are trying to catch is in fact a dangerous blue ringed octopus: on a successful DC 15 nature or survival check ou understand the situation. * The mushrooms you tried to harvest were in fact house to a sprite colony. Roll for initiative! * A poisonous mushrooms has been harvested by mistake: a successful DC 15 survival or nature check may reveal it for what it is. If noone notices all the characters that feed on that mushroom make a DC 12 constitution saving throw, becoming poisoned until they finish a long rest or succeed in the saving throw, that is repeated every hour (or at the beginning of their turn in combat). * The giant oyster had a 1000 GP worth pearl within itself! * Something far more dangerous than any common fish has been hooked. \page ## Detailed Roleplaying Foraging is resolved with the roll of dice, but at the DM's own accord, or if players wish so it can be even more detailed: instead that rolling the amount of food found the player makes a survival check: on a 20 it gets the maximum amount it could get and it gets proportionally less, for example suppose Beorn rolls a 23 in coastal foraging, it then makes a survival check. He rolls 18 + 2, 20! He finds and manages to get two big octopuses of 20 lbs each. Now he may have to catch them, making an attack roll or the DM could just give him. Suppose he rolls a 12, + 2 14: he still finds two octopuses, but one is smaller than the other. On a result of 10 or lower he will find only one that will become progressively smaller. It doesn't end here: suppose Beorn doesn't make a generical survival check and roll on the table, he wants to go look specifically for crabs. He makes a perception check against a d20 rolled by the master. On a tie or a greater result Beorn will find crabs, now it's time to get them. Beorn declares he wants to bait them out and get them once they go after the rotten fish he is carring to lure them. This is a good tactic! Now in the survival check made to determine how many crabs Beorn will find (and how big they will be) Beorn has to only beat 15 to get the maximum amount. (Or the DM may simplify, giving him advantage i have to decide). On the other hand if Beorn runs around chasing crabs and making noise they will get scared and the threshold to beat to get the maximum amount will increase to 25. It's up to the DM to decide how much the "DC" increases or decreases, depending on their own experience, knowledge on the matter and the harshness of the environment. ### Scarcity and abundance There are many reasons that decrease or increase the probabilities to find resources and their amounts. #### Populated Areas As a DM consider halving the amount or the weight of what is found foraging, hunting or fishing if there are highly populated areas within 20 miles. There may be exceptions if they are in aequilibrium with the nature and do not exploit it too much. The DC to find something increases by 2 as well. #### Hot and cold Winter or extreme cold increase the DC of cold areas by 3 and summer or extreme heat increase the DC of hot areas by 3. Other factors at the DM's decision may increase or decrease such DC, as described later. #### Pollution A polluted area increases the DC to find food by 10. The same happens with overfishing, overharvesting and overhunting. Characters eating food from a polluted area have a 5% chance of getting poisoned. The DM rolls a d20, on a 1 the characters eating must beat a DC14 constitution saving throw or get poisoned for one hour. Additionally, chances to get food poisoning increase. #### Migration During a migration great amounts of animals gather together to travel. If you hunt or fish during such a period the DC to find food is lowered by 3 and there is a 5% chance to find that specific animal. #### Food Sources Near food sources, like a fish ball, a watering hole or a feeding ground the DC to find food decreases by 5. #### Starvation Eating enough food restores 1 point of exhaustion caused by lack of food. Sleeping with a full belly restores another 1. \page ## Mining Another activity characters may attempt while out in the wild is to mine for rare materials and gemstones. In real life mining is an extremely lengthy process, especially without machines or other methods.
