# The Joker Class

With a grin and a flourish, the caster reveals another card between their fingers, as though the last one had never left their hand. Jokers are wielders of chaotic magic bound to enchanted decks of playing cards. To them, reality itself is a game of chance, and every spell cast is another gamble with fate. Their magic twists probability, turning unlikely victories into certainty and disastrous outcomes into opportunities for trickery. Some Jokers are wandering entertainers and stage magicians whose tricks became real. Others are gamblers who discovered their luck carried a supernatural edge. Whether charming tricksters, reckless risk-takers, or masters of deception, all Jokers share one thing in common: when the cards are drawn, anything can happen. ### Masters of Chance A Joker’s magic does not come from rigid study or divine blessing. Instead, it flows from a strange and unpredictable bond with fate itself. Through a mystical deck of cards, a Joker channels chaotic forces that twist probability, fortune, and misfortune alike. To a Joker, the world is a game of chance. Each spell cast, each card drawn, and each gamble taken invites fate to intervene. Sometimes luck smiles, turning a simple spell into a miracle. Other times fate demands a price. No two Jokers wield their magic in quite the same way. Some believe their power comes from ancient spirits of luck or trickster gods who delight in meddling with mortal affairs. Others claim their deck is a conduit to a deeper cosmic randomness that underlies reality itself. Whatever its true origin, one thing is certain: when a Joker draws a card, the outcome is never entirely in their control ### Called by Fortune Jokers appear in many walks of life, often where risk and uncertainty are part of everyday existence. Gamblers, traveling performers, con artists, and street magicians are common among their ranks. For some, their magical deck appears suddenly, as though gifted by fate itself. For others, it is the result of years spent mastering sleight of hand and arcane trickery. Some Jokers inherit enchanted decks passed down through generations, while others discover strange cards in forgotten markets or ancient ruins. A few claim their decks were given to them by mysterious patrons—beings who watch the turning of fortune with great amusement. However it begins, becoming a Joker means embracing uncertainty. Those who fear failure rarely last long, but those who learn to dance with chaos often find themselves capable of impossible feats.

### Creating a Joker When creating a Joker character, think about how they came to possess their enchanted deck and what their relationship with luck and chance might be. Do they see their abilities as a blessing, a curse, or simply a game? Perhaps they trust completely in fate, believing every draw of the card is meant to be. Others might try to manipulate their deck as much as possible, treating the world like a rigged game waiting to be beaten. Consider where your Joker learned their craft. Were they a carnival illusionist who discovered real magic hiding within their tricks? A professional gambler whose luck turned supernatural? Or perhaps a wandering trickster who delights in bending reality and expectations alike. Also think about how your character handles risk. Jokers thrive on uncertainty, but some embrace reckless gambles while others carefully stack the deck in their favor. #### Quick Build You can make a Joker quickly by following these suggestions. First, make Charisma your highest ability score, followed by Dexterity or Constitution. Second, choose the Entertainer, Charlatan, or Gambler background if available. Third, choose the card sling, mage hand, and minor illusion cantrips, along with the following 1st-level spells: chaos bolt, fog cloud, and silent image.

#### Equipment You start with the following equipment, in addition to the equipment granted by your background: - *(a)* A light crossbow and 20 bolts or *(b)* any simple weapon - *(a)* an entertainer's pack *(b)* a scholar's pack or *(c)* an explorer's pack - A set of playing cards, leather armor, and a dagger \page ### Spellcasting At first level, the Joker gains the ability to cast spells. #### Cantrips At first level, you know the *card sling* cantrip and 2 other cantrips of your choice from the Joker spell list. You learn additional Joker cantrips of your choice at higher levels, as shown in the Cantrips Known column of the Joker table. #### Preparing and Casting Spells The Joker table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your Joker spells of 1st level and higher. To cast one of these spells, you must expend a slot of the spell's level or higher. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a long rest. You prepare the list of Joker spells that are available for you to cast. To do so, choose a number of Joker spells from your spell list equal to your Charisma modifier + half your Joker level (rounded up, minimum of one spell). The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots. For example, if you're a 3rd-level Joker, you have four 1st-level and two 2nd-level spell slots. With a Charisma of 16, your list of prepared spells can include five spells of 1st or 2nd level, in any combination, chosen from your spell list. If you prepare the 1st-level spell magic missile, you can cast it using a 1st-level or a 2nd-level slot. Casting the spell doesn't remove it from your list of prepared spells. You can change your list of prepared spells when you finish a long rest. Preparing a new list of Joker spells requires time spent practicing with your deck of cards: at least 1 minute per spell level for each spell on your list. #### Spellcasting Ability Charisma is your spellcasting ability for your Joker spells. You use your Charisma whenever a spell refers to your spellcasting ability. In addition, you use your Charisma modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a Joker spell you cast and when making an attack roll with one. ___

#### Spellcasting Focus A set of playing cards is your spellcasting focus. ### Deck A Joker’s deck is considered magical and cannot be destroyed by nonmagical means. Your deck consists of the standard array of 52 cards. Two joker cards are added at level 3. Your deck lies face down and your discard pile lies face up. Any cards that are drawn, unless instructed otherwise, are sent to your discard pile after they are resolved. Your discard pile must be reshuffled into your deck after a long rest or if you run out of cards. You may also choose to reshuffle your deck during a short rest.

### Level 1: Mayhem As a bonus action, you can draw a card to unleash a minor chaotic effect based on its suit. * **Spades**: * **Hearts**: * **Clubs**: * **Diamonds**: * **Joker**: ### Level 1: Ace Up My Sleeve When you cast a Joker spell of 1st level or higher, you can draw one card from your deck. If the spell belongs to the Illusion school, draw two cards instead. If any of the drawn cards is an Ace, the spell is cast without expending a spell slot. This feature can trigger only once per turn.

If multiple abilities cause you to draw a card after casting a spell, draw for Ace Up My Sleeve before drawing for any other triggered abilities. ### Level 1: Card Sharp At first level, your proficiency bonus is doubled for any ability check you make that uses your proficiency with a gaming set of playing cards. ### Level 2: Face Value At second level, Choose 1 of the following features:

**King:** Add your Charisma modifier (minimum of 1) to all Constitution saving throws that you make to maintain your concentration on a spell.

**Queen:** You gain proficiency in martial weapons, medium armor, and shields.

**Jack:** Choose two of your skill proficiencies. Your proficiency bonus is doubled for any ability check you make that uses those chosen proficiencies.

### Level 2: Mulligan \page ### Level 3: Joker Archetype At third level, place 2 jokers into your deck and choose an archetype: Swindler, Magician, Gambler, Summoner. **For abilities that require a value, jokers count as 0**. ### Level 4: Ability Score Improvement When you reach 4th level, and again at 8th, 12th, 16th, and 19th level, you can increase one ability score of your choice by 2, or you can increase two ability scores of your choice by 1. As normal, you can’t increase an ability score above 20 using this feature. Alternatively, you can choose a feat. ### Level 5: Stacked Deck At 5th level, remove all cards of value 2 from your deck permanently ### Level 7: Shared Luck Starting at 7th level, you can manipulate the fates of your allies using your deck. When an ally you can see within 30 feet fails an attack roll or saving throw, you can use your reaction to draw a card from your deck. The card’s value determines the effect: * **Ace**: The ally automatically succeeds on the roll. * **2–10**: Add half the card’s value (rounded up) to the roll. * **Face Card (Jack, Queen, King)**: The ally may reroll the die and choose which result to use. * **Joker**: The ally succeeds on the roll, but the next attack against you gains advantage.

You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of once). You regain all uses after a long rest. ### Level 8: Ability Score Improvement See Level 4: Ability Score Improvement ### Level 9: Stacked Deck (2) Starting at 9th level, remove all cards of value 3 from your deck permanently ### Level 11: Pandemonium Starting at 11th level, you gain the ability to unleash the chaotic nature of your deck. As an action, draw three cards from your deck one at a time, resolving each card completely before drawing the next. Each suit has a unique effect: * **Spades**: Release a gust of wind in a 15-foot line from you. Each creature of size large or smaller must succeed on a Strength saving throw against your spell save DC or be knocked prone. * **Hearts**: Heal yourself and all allies within 10 feet for 1d6 + card value (1-13). * **Clubs**: Fling the card at a creature within 60 feet. The creature takes 1d6 + card value (1-13) bludgeoning damage and is knocked back 5 feet away from you. * **Diamonds**: The card explodes in a bright light. One creature within 30 feet of you is blinded until the start of its next turn. * **Joker**: Draw 2 additional cards. After resolving each card and any triggered subclass abilities, you immediately suffer the effects of the Confusion spell, automatically failing the initial saving throw. Saving throws for this effect are made against your own spell save DC.

Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest. At 17th level, you can use this twice per long rest.

### Level 12: Ability Score Improvement See Level 4: Ability Score Improvement \page ### Level 15: Serendipity Starting at 15th level, your influence over others' fate feeds back to you. Whenever an ally succeeds on an attack roll or saving throw as a result of your *Shared Luck* feature, you gain advantage on your next attack roll or saving throw before the end of your next turn. You can only gain the bonus from Serendipity once per turn. ### Level 16: Ability Score Improvement See Level 4: Ability Score Improvement ### Level 17: Pandemonium (2) Starting at 17th level, you can use *Pandemonium* twice per long rest ### Level 18: Trickster's Guise Starting at 18th level, you achieve a perfect understanding of your deck. As a bonus action, you may take on the form of the Trickster for 1 minute or until you choose to end it (no action required). While transformed: * You have advantage on all Charisma checks and Charisma saving throws. * You can teleport instead of moving. Each time you teleport, you expend movement equal to the distance teleported. You can teleport multiple times on your turn, provided you have enough movement remaining. You must teleport to an unoccupied space you can see. * When a creature hits you with an attack but before damage is rolled, you can choose to roll a d6. On a 4–6, the attack instead hits an illusory duplicate and automatically misses. Once this effect succeeds, you can’t use it again until the start of your next turn. Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest. ### Level 19: Ability Score Improvement See Level 4: Ability Score Improvement ### Level 20: Heart of the Cards At 20th level, all cards with a value of 4 in your deck count as jokers. \page ## Joker Archetypes
## Swindler A Swindler doesn't need to hope they draw the winning card when it is already in their hand. ### Level 3: Hold Out Starting at 3rd level, immediately after you shuffle your deck, draw the top two cards and place them into your hand. Drawing cards this way does not trigger a Joker’s effect. You may have a maximum of two cards in your hand at any time.

Whenever you would be prompted to draw a card from your deck, you can use your reaction to play one card from your hand instead. This must be done before you see the card you would have drawn, and it replaces only that one card. This ability cannot be used to trigger *Ace up my Sleeve*.

Whenever you shuffle your deck, any remaining cards in your hand must be returned to the deck, and you draw a new hand of two cards. ### Level 3: Scry Starting at 3rd level, whenever a Joker is drawn (other than when drawing for your hand), you can look at the top five cards of your deck. You may rearrange those cards in any order and place them back on top of the deck.

You may also choose any number of those five cards and place them in your discard pile instead of returning them to the top of the deck. ### Level 6: Marked Card Starting at 6th level, as a bonus action, you can look through your discard pile and add one card of your choice to your hand. This card does not count against the maximum number of cards you can hold.

Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest ### Level 10: Hold Out (2) When drawing cards for your *Hold Out* ability, you now draw 3 cards. Your maximum hand size is increased to 3 cards. ### Level 10: False Deal Once per turn, when you draw a card from your deck that would be resolved immediately or play a card from your hand, you can use a free action to change the card’s suit to a suit of your choice. The card's numeric value does not change, and Jokers cannot be altered.

You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum 1). You regain all uses after a long rest.
### Level 14: Tip the Scales Once per long rest as an action, you can create a field centered on a point you can see within 30 feet. The field has a 15-foot radius and lasts for 1 minute.

All friendly creatures in the area gain a bonus to attack rolls and saving throws equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum +1).

Misfortune for Foes: All enemies in the area suffer a penalty to attack rolls and saving throws equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum -1). \page ## Magician Magicians are performers whose tricks blur the line between illusion and reality. ### Level 3: Dove Pan You add the *find familiar* spell to your spells known. This spell does not count against the number of spells you can know. Additionally, you can choose to make your familiar take the form of an *Almiraj* or a *Flying Monkey* when the spell is cast.

You can communicate telepathically with your familiar and perceive through your familiar's senses as long as you are on the same plane of existence. Additionally, while perceiving through your familiar's senses, you can also speak through your familiar in your own voice, even if your familiar is normally incapable of speech.

Once per long rest, you can command your familiar to cast *Invisibility* on itself as a free action. The familiar must maintain concentration for the duration, and no other creature can benefit from the spell. ### Level 3: Flourish At 3rd level, you can embellish your spells with a surge of magical power. Whenever you cast a leveled spell that deals damage, you can draw a card from your deck. Add the card’s value (1–13) to the damage dealt by the spell. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of once). You regain all uses after a long rest. ### Level 3: Cut and Restored Starting at 3rd level, whenever you draw a joker, you can choose one of the following effects: * Regain two expended spell slots of 3rd level or lower * Gain temporary hit points equal to 1d8 + your Joker level. ### Level 6: Transposition Starting at 6th level, you can use a bonus action to conjure a card and throw it at a creature within 30 feet, making an attack roll using your spell attack modifier. On a hit, or if the creature is willing, the card sticks to them for up to 1 minute. You may expend a spell slot to extend the duration to 1 hour.

While the card is attached, you can use your action to swap places with that creature, after which the card disappears. Each turn, the creature can use its action to attempt to remove the card by making an Intelligence saving throw against your spell save DC.

You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of 1). You regain all uses after a long rest.

### Level 10: Misdirection When you cast a Joker spell of 1st level or higher, you can cause the spell to originate from a point you can see within 30 feet of you, rather than from your own space.

When you do so, the spell is cast subtly, requiring no verbal or somatic components. Creatures that witness the spell must succeed on an Intelligence (Investigation) check against your spell save DC to determine that you were the source of the spell.

Additionally, after the spell is cast, you may use your reaction to immediately move up to 10 feet without provoking attacks of opportunity.

You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier. You regain all uses after a long rest. ### Level 14: The Prestige Once per long rest as an action, you can create an illusory field centered on a point you can see within 30 feet. The field has a 30-foot radius and lasts for 1 minute.

Creatures of your choice can see through the field and move normally. All other creatures treat the area as lightly obscured and difficult terrain. While inside the field, creatures have disadvantage on attack rolls against you.

While inside the field, you can teleport up to 10 feet to another unoccupied space within the field as a bonus action.

Hostile creatures have disadvantage on Intelligence (Investigation) checks to discern any illusions you create while inside the field \page ## Gambler Gamblers embrace the volatile nature of their deck to unleash chaotic attacks. ### Level 3: All In Starting at 3rd level, whenever you make a successful attack roll, you can choose to roll a d20. * On a roll of 11–20, the attack is a critical hit. * On a roll of 1–10, the attack backfires: you take 1d12 force damage and fall prone.

You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of once). You regain all expended uses after a long rest. ### Level 3: Wild Card Starting at 3rd level, whenever you draw a joker, roll on the Wild Magic Surge table to create a random magical effect. This feature can activate only once per turn.

If you roll a 99–100, you instead regain one expended spell slot of 5th level or lower.

If a second joker is drawn on the same turn or as part of the same action, set it aside; it does not return to your deck until used. You can play a set-aside joker at any time as a bonus action to activate the effect of Wild Card. ### Level 6: Fold Starting at 6th level, when you are targeted by an attack or must make a Dexterity saving throw against an area of effect, you can use your reaction to warp into a pocket dimension. While in the pocket dimension, you are intangible and cannot be targeted or take damage.

At the start of your next turn, you reappear at a random unoccupied space within 30 feet of your original location chosen by the DM. This space cannot be on the other side of a solid barrier unless no other unoccupied spaces are available.

Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a short or long rest. ### Level 10: Double or Nothing When you a cast spell of 1st level or higher, you may declare Double or Nothing and draw a card.
* On an Ace, the deck overloads. The spell fails and the spell slot is wasted. * On a 2-8, the spell fails, but the spell slot is not used. * On a 9-13, the spell is cast 2 levels higher without expending a higher level spell slot. * On a joker, the spell resolves normally, but you roll twice on the Magic Surge table instead of once.

### Level 14: The House Always Wins Once per long rest as an action, you create a field centered on a point you can see within 30 feet. The field has a 30-foot radius and lasts for 1 minute.

At the start of their turn while inside the field, a creature may choose to gamble as a free action. A creature may only gamble once per round. If the creature chooses to gamble, it rolls two separate d20s. * 11–20: success * 1–10: failure

If the creature gets a double success, it hits the jackpot. If the creature gets a double failure, it busts. Otherwise, nothing happens.

You are the house. When you gamble, you roll only one d20 instead of two. On a failure, nothing happens.

On a jackpot, the creature can choose one of the following bonuses: * Automatically succeed on one failed attack roll this turn. * Gain +4 AC until the start of your next turn. * Gain temporary hit points equal to 3 x proficiency bonus. * Move up to your movement speed without provoking opportunity attacks.

On a bust, the creature rolls 1d4 and suffers the following effect:

\page ## Joker Signature Spells #### Card Sling *Transmutation cantrip* ___ - **Casting Time:** 1 action - **Range:** 60 feet - **Components:** V, S, M (a playing card) - **Duration:** Instantaneous You draw a card from your deck and hurl it at a creature within range. Make a ranged spell attack against the target. On a hit, the target takes 1d6 piercing damage. If a joker is drawn, the caster takes 1d6 psychic damage (to a minimum of 1 hp). Drawing a joker as a result of this spell does not activate any subclass ability. You must have a deck of playing cards on your person to cast this spell.

**At Higher Levels.** This spell creates more cards when you reach higher levels: two cards at 5th level, three cards at 11th level, and four cards at 17th level. You can direct the cards at the same target or at different ones. Make a separate attack roll for each card.
