# Thri-Kreen

Thri-kreen wander the deserts and savannas of the world, avoiding all other races. Due to this, few of them are often seen, and fewer still become adventurers. Nearly all of those that do venture away from their people do so because of exile. Those that are exiled often looked upon with contempt from other Thri-Kreen. Fewer venture out of their own free will, and are often shunned or outright mistrusted by their own people.

### Appearance
Thri-kreen resemble bipedal praying mantises. Their bodies are coated in exoskeletons with various earthy hues, including rust red, sandy yellow, and mottled green-brown. Unlike most humanoids, thri-kreen possess six limbs, walking on two legs and possessing four arms, each ending in four prehensile, claw-like fingers. Their heads possess compound eyes, generally in somewhat-brighter colors like green or blue, antennae, and mandibles.

Their lower bodies are very powerful, and because of their exoskeleton they are proportionally much lighter than most humanoids of their size. Combined, these traits give them exceptional reflexes, speed, and jumping power.

### A Language All Their Own
Thri-kreen employ a language without words. To show emotion and reaction, a thri-kreen clacks its mandibles and waves its antennae, giving other thri-kreen a sense of what it is thinking and feeling. Other creatures find this manner of communication difficult to interpret and impossible to duplicate.
When forced to interact with creatures of other intelligent species, thri-kreen employ alternative methods of communication, such as drawing pictures in sand or making pictures out of twigs or blades of grass.

The Structure of a Thri-Kreen's mandibles make any conventional form of communication difficult. Some Thri-Kreen may learn to understand other languages, but to find one able to converse in another language is even more rare than a Thri-Kreen Adventurer.

### Emotional Reactions

Thri-kreen experience the full range of emotions but aren't as prone to emotional outbursts as other races.. Thri-kreen with psionic ability often demonstrate a wider range of emotions, particularly if they live near or interact with humans or other highly emotional creatures.

### Other Races
Thri-Kreen are naturally isolationists and wanderers. They consider all other living creatures as potential nourishment, and hold no taboos against cannibalism or the consumption of the flesh of other sapient creatures. If a creature might be useful for something other than food, the thri- kreen aren't likely to attack it on sight. Despite this, Thri-kreen are no more lekly to commit murder than any other person. Thri-Kreen kill to survive, never for sport. Despite this, their lack of taboo against the consumption of sapient species and their lack of communication skills has resulted in an extremely sinister reputation.

### Society
Thri-kreen view themselves as hunters and judge other folk on the simple relationship of predator to prey. They respect those who live off the land and treat it with care. On the other hand, savage and evil races such as gnolls and orcs despoil the lands that should be hunted with respect, and thus they earn the thri-kreen’s enmity. The mantis warriors generally regard city folk and farmers of other races as not-hunters, and therefore worth neither their attention nor their enmity.

Thri-Kreen tend to move and act in "clutches" of approximately six individuals, in a combination of a team and family. Lone thri-kreen or those integrated into the broader community of other races still obey this instinct to form a "clutch."

### Thri-Kreen Names

Thri-Kreen names do not fall in arbitrary categories of male and female. Most of their names are noises that seem to be enjoyable to their own ears. A Thri-Kreen may change its name as it discovers new sounds that it enjoys more than the previous ones. As such, many Thri-Kreen have evolving names, and are not often referred to by their name, even by other Thri-Kreen.

Common names include Tik-Cla, Snik-Tli, Tri-Kra, Cha-Thka, Cri-Sna, and Kat-Sti.

**Carapace Armor.** Thri-Kreen’s natural armor is both a blessing and a curse. Their outer carapace grants an AC equal to 13 plus their Dexterity modifier. If a Thri-Kreen chooses to wear conventional armor, it must have the armor modified to fit its four armed body structure. Such changes triple the base cost for the armor.

**Standing Leap.** Thri-Kreen roll with Advantage whenever they use their Athletics skill to attempt to long-jump. In addition, they may always jump their maximum height, even without moving at least 10 feet.

**Languages.** Thri-Kreen use their mandibles to create clicks, whistles, and snaps. Thri-Kreen speak their own language composed of these noises. A Thri-Kreen can understand Common but many do not speak it. When communicating with others, Thri-Kreen will often use gestures or simple drawings to iterate their points. Some characters may be able to understand Thri-Kreen and act as translators.

**Sleepless.** Thri-Kreen don’t require sleep and can rest while remaining alert and performing light tasks. Their inability to sleep is thought to be one of the reasons why they have such short lifespans. A Thri-Kreen can spend 8 hours performing light taska and gain the benefits of a long rest.

**Multiple Limbs.** Unlike humanoid species, Thri-Kreen possess four arms. As such, they can wield two additional one handed items or one additional two handed weapon.

**Bite.** Using an action, you may bite, using your mandibles. This attack deals 1d6 + Strength modifier of piercing damage.

Beginning at 7th level, creatures that take damage from your bite attack must make a Constitution saving throw or suffer the poisoned condition for one minute. The DC for this is:
DC=8+Proficiency Bonus + Strength Modifier
Additionally, if the saving throw fails by 5 or more, the target is also paralyzed while poisoned in this way. The poisoned target can repeat the saving throw on each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.

**Weapon Proficiencies.** Thri-Kreen train in the usage of two unique weapons: the gythka, a polearm-like weapon with a blade on each end, and a chatkcha, a flat, triangular wedge with 3 serrated blades. Both weapons are detailed below.

>##### Unique Weapons
>_**Martial Weapons**_

>**Gythka.** 1d8 Slashing, Two-Handed

>While wielding a Gythka, a Thri-Kreen can make an attack using the opposite blade as a Bonus Action.

>**Chatkcha** 1d6 Piercing, Light, Thrown (range 30/120)
