# Giant Space Hamster

*"Boo is my animal companion, and while some smaller rangers might compensate for their size by travelling with bears or wolves, I prefer the subtleties provided by a miniature giant space hamster! Yes, subtle!"*

*- Minsc, a ranger from Rashemen.*

Giant space hamsters are exactly what they sound like – cute but brown bear-sized rodents with thick fur. They are found on worlds having colonies of gnomes. Giant space hamsters come in a variety of colors, but are usually golden brown with white underbellies, bands, and spots. They are well muscled but appear fat. A giant space hamster can store up to 200 pounds of food in its cheeks.

***Gnome Ingenuity.*** The giant space hamsters can be found on gnomish sidewheelers, running within the sidewheels giving the appearance that the hamsters are the method of propulsion for these ships. As with any other 'rodents' it only takes a few to start breeding and in the time the giant space hamsters have been in space more than a few have made it into the wild and bred like crazy. Wild giant space hamsters are more aggressive and territorial than their domestic counterparts.

Giant space hamsters normally have only one mode of attack – a nasty bite. They avoid even this on most occasions, as domestic breeds are quite cowardly. Careless gnome handlers have sometimes been bitten and stuffed into a cheek pouch, a hamster will chew on anything in it's cheek pouches until it stops moving and then spit it out if it isn't food.

***Hamster and Cart.*** These creatures did not evolve naturally, as one might guess. They were created by a gnome research committee attempting to develop a relatively passive creature large enough to wind up the giant rubber bands attached to the huge running wheels inside gnomish spelljammer craft. These devices produce internal power from torque (teams of gnomes formerly filled this job.) The giant space hamsters produced by the committee ran for hours inside their big wheels, and were eventually spread through space.

Gnomes have found that the meat of giant space hamsters is quite tasty. Space hamster meat is called "spaham", and many gnomes eat large quantities of spaham with every meal. Many hamster ranches simply breed giant space hamsters as livestock.

***Endless Experimentation.*** During their experiments, the gnomes attempted to create various different types of hamsters by infusing them with different materials and magical properties. What originally started as a scientific endeavor to create “the better hamster” ended up being a competition of sorts between different groups of scientists to see what is the most unique species of hamster.

Some of these adjustments were as simple as changing their color, and as a result there exist hamsters ranging in appearance from the traditional light brown to something as extreme as bright red or purple. In some other instances the result ended up being an extreme form of mutation where the hamster became physically different: growing fangs, toughened hide, or even breathing fire.

***Giant Space Hamster.*** The giant space hamsters are in fact herbivores, although this fact does not stop them from biting creatures when they are threatened. Giant space hamsters tend to use their cheek pouch to restrain foes and gnaw at them until they stop moving, then they spit them out.

***Meat Eaters.*** These hamsters are amongst the most aggressive of their kind. With the DNA of various apex predators the carnivorous flying hamster excels in the wild. They are not often kept in captivity due to the dangers of keeping livestock that eats the farmers.

Their diet consists solely of meat, and they hunt in packs. They are often able to outmanoeuvre their prey and other predators with their large, clumsy but effective bat-like wings. Once they pierce flesh and cause their quarry to bleed it is almost impossible to escape.

***Horned Hamster.*** The great horned giant space hamster are affectionately known as hamstercorns due to their long, spiralled horn that protrude from their foreheads. The horn has a bone core and is a result of experimentations with unicorns. Poachers try to loot gnomish vessels for hamstercorns, attempting to steal the horns pass them off as unicorn horns.

***Vanishing Vermin.*** It is believed that the invisible giant space hamster is able to maintain it's invisibility permanently, much like the invisible stalkers from which it gets it's power. It is also widely believed that the hamster is just too stupid to do so.

This variety is very rarely used on ships as they often go missing, for obvious reasons. Sometimes whole ships will be looking for one when it never actually left it's wheel. Other times they turn up weeks later trying to eat some important part of the engine.

***Rodent Odor.*** When the gnomes originally created these enormous creatures, one thing they actively did is try and suppress the extremely foul odor these creatures developed, which was a natural smell of the animal that was magnified exponentially due to their increased size.

Although they were *usually* successful in suppressing it, *occasionally* the suppression failed and the creature’s naturally nauseating odor was further magnified.

***The Giant Space Hamster of Ill Omen.*** There is a legend shared amongst the gnomes of an enormous giant hamster that floats through the cosmos. Known as “Woolly Rupert”, this creature is believed to be the largest and most intelligent hamster in existence. It has immense power, far beyond that of any normal hamster.

The gnomes fear this beast above all other things, terrified of its existence and the day when it will descend upon them to exact its revenge. The legend of Woolly Rupert is told to the young gnomes to instil fear in their hearts, as a warning to be good and do their chores or else the most powerful of all hamsters will crush them beneath his enormous feet.

The story the council of gnomes keep secret is that Woolly Rupert was a Miniature Giant Space Hamster, once familiar to a powerful gnome wizard, but he became angry with the enslavement of his people. He harnessed the prayers of all hamsters big and small, and ascended. He visits the beasts of burden in dreams, and the gnomish farmhands blame all their bad luck on him. He seeks revenge on gnome-kind.

> ### Legendary Actions
>Rupert can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. Rupert regains spent legendary actions at the start of his turn.

> **Attack.** Rupert makes one stomp attack.

> **Chomp (Costs 2 Actions).** Rupert makes one bite attack or uses its Swallow.

> **Electrostatic Fur (Costs 2 Actions).** Rupert generates electricity with his wooly fur, discharging electricity at a creature he can see within 120 feet. The target must make a DC 24 Dexterity saving throw, taking 38 (7d10) lightning damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

***Redundant Rodents.*** Decades after the gnomes successfully created the Giant Space Hamsters, a small sect of gnomes set out to breed a miniature version. After many years of trial, error and confusion they created the Miniature Giant Space Hamsters.

Unfortunately for them the gnome council was quick to point out that a miniature giant hamster was indistinguishable from a regular hamster. The project was abandoned immediately after realisation set in.

---

***Cerebral Side Effects.*** Whilst unproven, there are some who say that the Miniature Giant Space Hamster is far smarter than a regular hamster or it's giant brethren.

Those with a Miniature Giant Space Hamster often claim that they can speak, every else just dismisses it as idle squeaking.

---

***Familiar Option.***
A Pact of the Chain Warlock may select a Miniature Giant Space Hamster to be their familiar.
Alternatively you may allow any character capable of gaining a familiar or animal companion to earn the trust or affection of such a familiar as a reward.
