# Pokémon 5E Player Regionality

Because the inhabitants of the Pokémon world consist of humans and Pokémon, the player races provided in the Player's Handbook and other source material might not be the best fit when running a Pokémon 5E game.
Listed in this handout are some Pokémon world-related **regionalities**, an alternative to the races created by Amazon9398 that accounts for spin-off regions, like Almia and Orre, and the newly-introduced Galar region.

## Alolan
The Alola region, an archipelago situated between the Kanto and Unova regions, is considered a tropical paradise with four major islands: Melemele Island, Akala Island, Ula'ula Island, and Poni Island. The Alolan people have a deep connection with both Pokémon and nature; they revere the four land spirits, known as the Tapu, as guardian dieties of the islands, and in return the Tapu fight off invading forces and protect Alola's inhabitants.

### Alolan Traits
Your Alolan character has a variety of traits reflective of their unique culture and traditions, bred by their deep spiritual connection to nature.

***Ability Score Increase.*** You can choose one ability score to increase by 2, and another to increase by 1. Alternatively, you may choose three ability scores to increase by 1.

```
```

If you're having trouble choosing ability scores to increase, consider the following recommendations:

* **Strength**, which usually dictates swimming and climbing and synergizes with your Island Life trait.
* **Intelligence**, to improve skills such as Nature and History and synergize with your Natural Connection trait.

***Natural Connection.*** You gain proficiency in the Nature skill, as you're accustomed to a land whose wild beauty is largely undisturbed and allowed to flourish.

***Trained Rider.*** Due to Alola's lack of Hidden Machines, you've grown up learning how to use special Ride Pokémon traveling on the islands.

***Intuitive Bond.*** Alolans share a deeper connection to most Pokémon compared to those from other regions. As a result, you can attempt to communicate simple ideas using sounds or gestures with any Pokémon.

***Languages.*** You can speak, read, and write Common and Alolan. As a Hawaiian parallel, the Alolan language is a Polynesian-like language with 13 letters in its alphabet and a glottal stop, or *'Okina*. This stop is usually reflected in the Pokémon world with either a dash or an apostrophe, such as with **Hakamo-o** (pronounced *haka-moh-oh*) or **Ula'ula** (pronounced *oolah-oolah*).

# Galarian and Kalosian
The Galar region only recently opened up to tourists across the world, and is located north-west of the Kalos region. Thanks to Galar's high energy production, the rugged landscape and ever-changing weather conditions of the aptly-named Wild Areas always provide a new challenge; trainers regularly camp out in various locations to train and scope out powerful Pokémon who live nearby.

The Kalos region is located on the west-side of a large continent, surrounded to its east by a large mountain range that connects on each end to the vast ocean to the west. It's star shape is apt, as Kalos is a wealthy region known for being in the forefront of fashion.

### Shared Traits
***Ability Score Increase.*** You can choose one ability score to increase by 2, or two ability scores to increase by 1.

If you're having trouble choosing ability scores to increase, consider the following recommendations:

* **Constitution**, to improve your hit points and saving throws against weather effects.
* **Charisma**, to improve your Performance and Persuasion skills.

***Showmanship.*** You gain proficiency in the Performance skill, as you aim to make your battles as passionate and exciting as possible.

***Languages.*** You can speak, read, and write Common, Kalosian, and Galarian. As a reflection of English in the UK regions, Galarian contains three dialects split between the northern, southern, and island areas of Galar; Southern Galarian is considered the most well-known of the three, with Island Galarian coming across as "rougher" and Northern Galarian falling somewhere between the two.

Kalosian reflects real-world French dialects; full of nasal phonemes, silent end consonants, and historical spellings, it's one of the oldest and most common regional languages even among the international community.

***Sub-Regionalities.*** Choose either Galarian or Kalosian to determine the rest of your traits.

### Galarian
Your Galarian character was raised in a region full of high-octane battles and a strong sense of identity, and has traits reflective of someone ready to make their way in the world beyond their borders.

***Wild Adaptation.*** Thanks to your experiencing camping in the unpredictable Wild Areas, you're used to sudden changes in nearby weather and Pokémon. When you complete a long rest, you can choose one skill or tool to gain proficiency in. This proficiency lasts for 24 hours, or until you finish another long rest.

At 5th level, you can select two proficiencies instead of one whenever you benefit from this feature.

### Kalosian
Your Kalosian character grew up surrounded by beauty and charm. Their regional traits a laid-back nature, ready to share stories and show off their talents.

***Silver Tongue.*** You gain proficiency in the Persuasion skill, as your natural charisma makes you a general delight to others and helps you talk your way out of most situations.

***Bon Chance.*** You have a natural luck that leads to things going your way, perhaps lending itself to the infamous laid-back Kalosian attitude. If you roll a 1 on the d20 whenever you make an ability check, attack roll, or saving throw, you can reroll the die but must use the new roll.

When you reach 5th level, each Pokémon you control can benefit from this feature once per encounter.

# Hoennian
The Hoenn region is an island nation located to the west of Johto and Kanto. The large landmass that makes up most of Hoenn is home to two mountain peaks, the volcanic Mt. Chimney and the smaller Mt. Pyre, and a multitude of natural biomes which have weathered such disasters as a drought, floods, and even meteorite impacts. As such, native Hoennians are well-equipped for any environment or weather conditions.

### Hoennian Traits
Your Hoennian character has traits born from exploration and versatility, developed to help handle everything the Hoenn region's climate has to throw at them.

***Ability Score Increase.*** You can choose one ability score to increase by 2, and another to increase by 1. Alternatively, you may choose three ability scores to increase by 1.

If you're having trouble choosing ability scores to increase, consider the following recommendations:

* **Strength**, which usually dictates swimming and climbing and could work well with your Home-Field Advantage trait.
* **Constitution**, to improve your hit points and saving throws against weather effects.

***Well-Equipped.*** You gain proficiency in the Survival skill, as you've learned the tricks of dealing with Hoenn's varied landscape.

***Home-Field Advantage.*** Growing up in one particular area of Hoenn has given you familiarity with that environment. Choose one environment that you grew up in; you gain certain benefits based on your selection.

- **Coast:** You gain a swimming speed equal to your walking speed.
- **Desert:** You have advantage on Constitution saving throws while under the effects of Extreme Heat or desert-like phenomena like sandstorms.
- **Forest:** You can attempt to Hide even when you're only lightly obscured by foliage or other natural phenomena.
- **Mountain:** You gain a climbing speed equal to your walking speed.

  style='position:absolute; top:20px; right:95px; width:622px' />

When you reach 5th level, you can select the benefits from a second environment as your understanding of a new locale becomes second-nature.

***Languages.*** You can speak, read, and write Common and Hoennian. Hoenn reflects real-world Japan's Kyushu, so its language could parallel its form of Japanese. Kyushu Japanese contains three distinctive dialects and multiple "simplified" adjectives (i.e. *samuka* instead of *samui* for "cold") and endings (i.e. dropping the r from *kore* to create *koi* for "this"). As such, Hoennian speech might come off as "less formal" than other Japanese-based regions.

# Johtonian and Kantonian
The Kanto region is perhaps the most famous of all the regions in the Pokémon world. The original home of the Indigo League championship and the world-renowned Pokémon Professor himself, Samuel Oak, the once-sleepy region now bustles with activity following the activites of Team Rocket's fall to international champions Red and Blue.

Conversely, the Johto region is one of the oldest regions in the world, with a rich history and cultural traditions leagues apart from its neighboring region. Though much of the land remains untouched by time, its most modern installments of the Radio Tower, Magnet Train, and Global Terminal stand in stark contrast to the ancient shrines of Ecruteak City just to the north.

### Shared Traits
***Ability Score Increase.*** You can choose one ability score to increase by 2, or two ability scores to increase by 1.

If you're having trouble choosing ability scores to increase, consider the following recommendations:

* **Intelligence**, to improve your History and Investigations skills, which synergize with either the Well-Learned trait (for Johtonians) or the Battle Intuition trait (for Kantonians).
* For Johtonians, **Charisma** to improve your Performance and Persuasion skills.
* For Kantonians, **Wisdom** to improve your Animal Handling and Perception skills.

***Languages.*** You can speak, read, and write Common, Johtonese, and Kantonese. Johto and Kanto reflect the real-world Western and Eastern regions of Japan; their dialects mainly differ in pitch accents and verb forms (i.e. the imperative form of *miru*, to look, being *miyo* or *mii* in Western Japanese versus *miro* or *mire* in the Eastern and Kyushu forms).

***Sub-Regionality.*** Chosoe either Johtonian or Kantonian to determine your skill proficiencies and last trait.

### Johtonian
As someone steeped in tradition and rich history, your Johtonian character shares a deep connection to history and culture.

***Well-Learned.*** Johtonians embrace the study of culture and steep themselves in traditions, whether it's their own or another region's they desire to learn. As a result, you gain proficiency in two skills of your choice from History, Insight, Nature, Performance, Persuasion, and Religion.

***Ceremonial Respite.*** During a short rest, you can choose to spend 10 minutes performing a small, comforting ceremony. This could be a traditional dance or song like you might find at Ecruteak's Dance Theatre, a spiritual prayer, a small tea ceremony, or even polishing your badges until they shine like the Olivine City lighthouse.

If you or any creature who joined your ceremony spends one or more hit dice at the end of the short rest, each of those creatures regains 1d4 additional hit points. This increases as you gain levels: to 2d4 at 5th level, 3d4 at 10th level, and 4d4 at 15th level.

### Kantonian
As a Kantonian character, you have an affinity for learning and an endless world of possibilities before you — you're here to make your own way in life, and you're a force to be reckoned with.

***Battle Intuition.*** You gain proficiency in both the Perception and Investigation skills, as Kantonian are proud of their innate ability to absorb their surroundings during battle and change their strategies at the drop of a hat.

***Your Own Way.*** Whether it's an unorthodox battling strategy or a unique skill learned over time, Kantonians always seem to have a trick up their sleeve at just the right moment. You gain one feat of your choice, subject to your DM's approval based on the setting.

# Sinnoan and Almian
As a northern-based island, Sinnoh is a region divided by the looming Mt. Coronet and its range, and is full of unforgiving cold temperature
and environments. Underneath Sinnoh lies a sprawling set of underground tunnels whose ore deposits, hidden treasures, and thermal heating provides a certain richness and tourism draw.

Connected to the lands south of Mt. Coronet is the Almia region, where a large union of
Pokémon Rangers operates. Although they don't participate in any official Pokémon League Championships like their northern neighbor,
<br>
they do host capture challenges for Rangers
across the region and from other Ranger-dominant regions such as Fiore.

### Shared Traits
***Ability Score Increase.*** You can choose one ability score to increase by 2, and another to increase by 1. Alternatively, you may choose three ability scores to increase by 1.

If you're having trouble choosing ability scores to increase, consider the following recommendations:

* **Strength**, to improve your Athletics skill.
* **Constitution**, to improve your saving throws against harsh weather conditions and synergize with your Body and Mind trait.

***Body and Mind.*** You gain proficiency with Constitution saving throws, as you've pushed yourself through harsh environments and are prepared to encounter even worse.

***Wrangler.*** You gain proficiency in the Athletics skill; trainers from the Sinnoh area are touted as being some of the strongest people in the world, no matter which part of the region they come from.

***Languages.*** You can speak, read, and write Common and Sinnoan. The Sinnoan language could be a reflection of the real-world Ainu language, which is found on the island of Hokkaido and other parts of Japan and Russia. Though very similar to Japanese, Ainu has modified writing characters and a rich history of oral storytelling via hero-sagas, called *yukar*, and other folktales called *uepeker*.

***Sub-regionality.*** Choose either Northern Sinnoan or Southern Sinnoan to determine your last trait.

### Sinnoan
As a Northern Sinnoan, you're traditionally what other people and Pokémon Trainers imagine when it comes to the Sinnoh region — you're used to colder temperatures and aren't afraid to get your hands dirty with the best of them.

***Unbothered.*** You are immune to the effects of Extreme Cold, and natural occurrences such as hail or snow don't impede your travel — the cold weather of other regions has nothing on Snowpoint City in the dead of winter.

### Almian
As a Southern Sinnoan, or Almian, you're better-recognized among the Pokémon Ranger community, as your versatility in Pokémon bonding styles and ability to traverse even the harshest of terrains are second-to-none.

***Wanderer.*** You ignore the effects of difficult terrain, and difficult terrain doesn't impede your group's travel outside of combat. Your time exploring Almia and learning the lessons of Pokémon Rangers have prepared you to take the road less traveled.

# Unovan and Orren
Unova is a vast region divided into three major sections of land, flanked by two large peaks and rivers that empty out into the sea. The Unovan spirit of "work hard, play hard" has turned what should be a wasteland in the region's heart into a resort spot.

Just to the west of Unova is the small, harsh region of Orre. Although connected to the world by the Gateon Port and a newly-constructed airstrip, settlements in Orre are few and far between thanks to the large amount of desert and the dormant volcano looming to the north.

Both regions prefer multi-battle formats, with Orre focusing more on double battles and Unova pioneering Triple and Rotation battles.

### Shared Traits
***Ability Score Increase.*** You can choose one ability score to increase by 2, or two ability scores to increase by 1.

If you're having trouble choosing ability scores to increase, consider the following recommendations:

* **Dexterity**, to improve your initiative checks and checks made to Run Away from battles.
* **Wisdom**, to improve your Animal Handling and Insight skills.

***Analytical.*** You gain proficiency in the Insight skill — whether it's from dealing with fast-talkers of the city or peering into the hearts of especially-vicious wasteland Pokémon, you've got a knack for reading others.

***Multi-Tasker.*** With your knowledge of multi-battles, you've developed quick-thinking skills that makes you an opportunistic battler. Once per long rest, you or one of your Pokémon can take 1 additional action on your turn in combat.

***Languages.*** You can speak, read, and write Common, Orren, and Unovan. Orren and Unovan could be considered two dialects of the same language, like western and eastern dialects of American English. As such, both are very similar but have differences such as inflection and slang.

```
```

***Sub-Regionality.*** Choose either the Unovan or the Orren sub-regionality to determine your last trait(s).

### Unovan
Eastern Unovans are those trainers hailing from the main cities in the region — those in the official Pokémon League, as well as those who enjoy riding the high-speed Battle Subway.

***Expedience.*** The hustle-and-bustle of city life taught you the value of making haste. Your base walking speed is increased by 5 feet, and you have advantage on Dexterity checks made to Run Away from a battle.

When you reach 5th level, you have advantage on initiative checks.

### Orren
Western Unovans grew up surrounded by desert and toughened up as a result. Though few and far between, Orren trainers taking the official League challenges of other regions are forces to be reckoned with.

***Wastelander.*** You are immune to the effects of Extreme Heat and natural occurrences in the desert like sandstorms, and these effects don't impede your group's travel outside of combat.

***Purifier.*** You learned how to appease the hearts of rampaging Pokémon.

Once per long rest, you can make an Animal Handling check on a Pokémon who is disloyal or acting wildly, with a DC determined by the Pokémon's SR and emotional state.

On a success, you gain advantage on all Wisdom- and Charisma-based ability checks on that Pokémon for up to one hour or until you or your allies attack it, as the Pokémon calms down enough to regard you as a non-threat. On a failure, the Pokémon becomes wary of you and may even attempt to attack your or your allies depending on its nature or emotional state.

Once you've used this feature on a Pokémon, it becomes immune to further attempts by you for the next 24 hours.
